    Fishing limits, necessity to cope with competitive fishermen of other countries, the lack of financial resources to purchase modern vessels have caused that more than 30% of the Polish fishing vessels operating at the Baltic sea were withdrawn from operation between 2003 and 2012. Vessels remaining in service, especially older types have to be upgraded by the owners towards: reduction in energy expenditure; reduce the number of crew boats by the expansion of mechanization of fishing operations; improving the safety of vessels and working on fishing boats. Uncoordinated modernizations of the fishing cutters prevent from comparing the obtained results. A research team of the Maritime University of Szczecin gathered opinions of the shipowners regarding the effects of the modernizations performed and conducted research which shall constitute the grounds to develop optimal directions for modernization and operation of the fishing vessels. This paper presents range and results of renovation and reconstruction the Polish fishing vessel DZI-102 operated at the Baltic sea.

    Opis:
    A significant number of failures and accidents of Polish fishing vessels operating in the Baltic Sea was the impetus to examine their sources. It was found that one of the important factors causing the failure is poor condition of the fuel systems and inappropriate fishing vessels to be operated. Typical fuel installations operated on Polish fishing vessels were discussed. The methodology of sampling and testing of samples of fuel from fishing vessels to assess its fuel quality has been presented, as well as tests results.
    Znacząca liczba awarii i wypadków polskich jednostek rybackich eksploatowanych na Bałtyku była impulsem do zbadania ich źródeł. Stwierdzono, iż jednym z istotnych czynników powodujących awarie jest zły stan techniczny układów paliwowych jednostek rybackich i niewłaściwa ich eksploatacja. W artykule omówiono typowe instalacje paliwowe polskich jednostek rybackich, przebadano pobrane z jednostek rybackich próbki paliwa celem oceny jego jakości i omówiono uzyskane wyniki.

    The Baltic Sea is crisscrossed by several dense vessel traffic routes. Growing shipping traffic increases the likelihood of collisions. A quantitative analysis of the impact of fishing vessel traffic streams on streams of merchant vessel traffic aims to identify areas of intense traffic of this type and to assess the potential risks. The identification of intersections of fishing vessel routes and merchant shipping traffic allows us to identify spots of potential collisions. The analysis made use of the IALA IWRAP Mk2 program and AIS data collected from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.

    Temperature is a basic climatic parameter deciding about the quality change of fishing products. Time, after which qualitative changes of caught fish don’t exceed established, acceptable range, is above all the temperature function. Temperature reduction by refrigeration system of the cargo hold is a basic technical method, which allows extend transport time. Failures of refrigeration systems in fishing vessels have a negative impact on the environment in relation to harmful refrigerants emission. The paper presents the statistical analysis of failures occurred in the refrigeration systems of Polish fishing vessels in 2007-2011 years. Analysis results described in the paper can be a base to draw up guidelines, both for designers as well as operators of the marine refrigeration systems.
    Temperatura jest podstawowym parametrem klimatycznym decydującym o zmianie jakości produktów połowu. Czas, po którym zmiany jakościowe złowionej ryby nie wykraczają poza założony, dopuszczalny zakres, jest przede wszystkim funkcją temperatury. Podstawowym środkiem technicznym pozwalającym na przedłużenie czasu transportu jest obniżenie temperatury ładowni za pomocą instalacji chłodniczej. Uszkodzenia instalacji chłodniczych jednostek rybackich wywierają negatywny wpływ na środowisko naturalne w związku z emisją szkodliwych czynników. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań uszkodzeń instalacji chłodniczych polskich jednostek rybackich w latach 2007-2011. Rezultaty analiz przedstawionych w niniejszej pracy mogą być podstawą do sporządzenia wytycznych zarówno dla projektantów jak i eksploatatorów okrętowych systemów chłodniczych.

    The paper presents the assumptions of a simulation model for assessing the navigational safety of fishing vessels. The model consist of submodels of merchant and fishing vessels traffic, submodel of external condition and submodel of accident consequences. Paper present also a results of simulation experiment which was carried out for Polish EEZ. Model takes into account all Polish fishing vessels operating in the Polish EEZ with length more than 15 meters and the merchant vessels traffic in South Baltic Sea area. As a results positions of simulated collisions of fishing and merchant vessels, positions and sizes of simulated bunker spills and the positions of losses of fishing equipment were achieved.
    W artykule przedstawiono założenia złożonego modelu symulacyjnego dla szacowania bezpieczeństwa nawigacyjnego statków rybackich. Model składa się z modeli ruchu statków handlowych i statków rybackich, modelu warunków środowiskowych oraz modelu skutków zdarzenia. Ponadto w artykule przedstawiono rezultaty eksperymentu symulacyjnego przeprowadzonego dla polskiej wyłącznej strefy ekonomicznej. Model uwzględnia wszystkie polskie statki rybackie operujące w polskiej wyłącznej strefie ekonomicznej o długości większej niż piętnaście metrów oraz ruch statków handlowych na południowej części Morza Bałtyckiego. W rezultacie otrzymano pozycje prawdopodobnych kolizji statków transportowych oraz rybackich, pozycje i rozmiary prawdopodobnych rozlewów olejowych oraz pozycje utraty narzędzi połowowych.

    Maritime and coastal areas are the lifeblood of many countries, being essential to their well-being. They provide trade routes, regulate the climate, and supply both organic and inorganic resources, along with energy, a crucial requirement for living and recreation. However, there are emerging disparities and barriers in terms of marine exploitation. On the one hand, existing and evolving technologies and knowledge allow better utilization of the sea, while on the other hand, the cumulative effect of human activity leads to conflicts of interest and to a deterioration of the marine environment. This article aims to consider the impact of changes in the world economy on the evolution of the fishing fleet, including the characteristics of vessels produced in consecutive years. We also attempt to determine the most common type of vessel presently operating in the world fleet. A number of external factors impact the organization and operation of the world’s fishing fleet, including economic, geographical, and political factors. The strength of each factor varies depending on the conditions in which the fleet operates. Also, we would also like to establish to what extent efforts aimed at energy demand reduction have affected the characteristics of the current fleet, determining the scale and direction of change, while also identifying any relevant constraints and limitations. The intention behind this paper is to discover the size and structure of the fishing fleet and whether it is changing as a result of environmental transformation. With this objective in mind, we have outlined a review of the literature and used statistical methods in order to carry out a comparative analysis of the size and structure of the world’s fishing fleet.

    This study is aimed at the determination of the significance of faults diagnosed in refrigerating plant components of fishing vessels. The problem is described by the Pareto-Lorenz analysis. The field work covers vessels of the Polish fishing fleet. Ships under examination are typical of the Polish fishing vessels operating at sea. The research has been based on data gathered in 2007–2011, consisting of 235 faults, detected and estimated for refrigerating systems of 25 small vessels of the Polish fishing fleet. Taking the refrigerant as a criterion of division, we have analyzed two types of vessels.
