Opis:
The aim of this paper was to investigate the temperature fields of the solid disc brake during short, emergency braking. The standard Galerkin weighted residual algorithm was used to discretize the parabolic heat transfer equation. The finite element simulation for two-dimensional model was performed due to the heat flux ratio constantly distributed in circumferential direction. Two types of disc brake assembly with appropriate boundary and initial conditions were developed. Results of calculations for the temperature expansion in axial and radial directions are presented. The effect of the angular velocity and the contact pressure evolution on temperature rise of disc brake was investigated. It was found that presented finite element technique for two-dimensional model with particular assumption in operation and boundary conditions validates with so far achievements in this field.

Opis:
The dynamic bone remodeling process is a computationally challenging research area that struggles to understand the actual mechanisms. It has been observed that a mechanical stimulus in the bone greatly affects the remodeling process. A 3D finite element model of a femur is created and a probabilistic analysis is performed on the model. The probabilistic analysis measures the sensitivities of various parameters related to the material properties, geometric properties, and the three load cases defined as Single Leg Stance, Abduction, and Adduction. The sensitivity of each parameter is based on the calculated maximum mechanical stimulus and analyzed at various values of probabilities ranging from 0.001 to 0.999. The analysis showed that the parameters associated with the Single Leg Stance load case had the highest sensitivity with a probability of 0.99 and the angle of the force applied to the joint of the proximal femur had the overall highest sensitivity.

The paper gives an overview of about recent developements in modelling, numerical analysis and design of piezoelectric controlled smart structures. Then, the theoretical basis of a general purpose finite element simulation tool developed by the authors is presented. This tool contains a number of coupled thermo-electro-mechanical 1D, 2D, 3D as well as layered plate and shell finite elements for simulating controlled structures in static and dynamic applications, where also optimization algorithms (e.g. for actuator location) can be included. Finally, three examples; i.e., actively controlled beam, vibration isolation of a box, and vibration isolation of a plate as a part of an exited cylinder structure, are presented to demonstrate the capability and efficiency of the simulation and design tool.

The paper aims was assessing risks of mandible fractures consequent to impacts or sport accidents. The role of the structural stiffness of mandible, related to disocclusion state, was evaluated using the finite element method. It has been assumed, that the quasi-static stress field, due to distributed forces developed during accidents, could explain the common types of mandibular fractures. Mandibular condyles were supposed jammed in the maxillary fossae. The force of 700 N, simulating an impact on mandible, has been sequentially applied in three distinct areas: centrally, at canine zone and at the mandibular angle. Clinically most frequent fractures of mandible were recognized through the analysis of maximal principal stress/strain fields. It has been shown that mandibular fracture during accidents can be analyzed at satisfactory level using linear quasi-static models for designing protections.

Opis:
The following work gives the details of the modelling, simulation, and testing of a small portable gravitational water vortex (GWV) based power plant. The gravitation water vortex is an ideal source of renewable energy for rural areas that have a small body of flowing water. For this purpose, we have selected a small size for the vortex chamber that enables it to form a vortex with limited amounts of water. The paper gives the details of the simulation of the GWV in COMSOL FEA software and the parameters that were chosen for optimization. These parameters were the height of the vortex chamber, the number of blades, the length of the blades, and the tilt angle of the blades. These parameters were systematically varied step by step, to observe their effect on the speed of the rotor. The results of the parametric sweep that was performed on all the parameters are also presented. Based on the simulation results an optimal set of parameters was chosen for the physical implementation of the GWV. The paper also goes into the details of the construction of the physical GWV, the experimental setup that was devised for the testing and verification of the simulation results.

The present paper deals with the experimental studies carried out on free vibration of isotropic and laminated composite skew plates. The natural frequencies were also determined using QUAD8 finite element of MSC/NASTRAN and a comparison was made between the experimental values and the finite element solution. The effects of the skew angle and aspect ratio on the natural frequencies of isotropic skew plates were studied. The effects of the skew angle, aspect ratio, fiber orientation angle and laminate sequence (keeping the number of layers constant) on the natural frequencies of antisymmetric composite laminates were also studied. The experimental values of natural frequencies are in good agreement with the FE solutions. The natural frequencies are found to increase with an increase in the skew angle. The variation of natural frequencies with the aspect ratio is small and negligible both for isotropic and laminated composite skew plates.

The aim of this study was to investigate and analyse the synchronous reluctance machine. An accurate method for determining the lumped parameters of an equivalent circuit of the studied machine has been proposed. The method is based on the phase currents and voltages analysis at low slip operation. Experimental research of a synchronous reluctance machine is supplemented by simulation studies. The field-circuit model of electromagnetic phenomena in the considered motor was developed and used in simulation. The proposed method allows the numerical model to be verified by comparing the calculated and measured torqueangle characteristics of the machine. The test results obtained are presented and discussed. Achieved satisfactory concordance between simulation and experiment results proves that the proposed approach can be useful in the synthesis of reliable synchronous reluctance machines as well as in their control systems.

Purpose: To analyze and estimate the strength of duralium rivets which had been treated by using multistage artificial aging compared with duralium that had not been treated. This processwas necessary to be conducted in riveting process effectively. Duralium has been widely used in aerospace industry, one of duralium usage in aerospace industry is aircraft fittings such as rivet. Riveting is one of method that used for joining airframe structural components. During riveting process, the load transfer causing stress that led to the fatigue. Riveting process also causes deformation on the rivet and sheet metal. Deformation that occurs on the rivet will affect the performance of rivet structure. Thus, duralium rivet was analyzed its total deformation, shear stress, and its equivalent stress Von Misses. Design/methodology/approach: that used in this study was finite element analysis. Geometry of rivet that used in this study was drawn by using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2018. While total deformation, shear stress and equivalent stress Von Mises on duralium rivets were found out by using ANSYS Workbench 18.1. Findings: Comparison result was obtained between duralium rivet with and without treatment of multistage artificial aging. The result shown that total deformation, shear stress and equivalent stress Von Mises which obtained by duralium rivet with multistage artificial aging had the lower value than duralium rivet without multistage artificial aging. Duralium rivet with multistage artificial aging could be used as aircraft fitting which had the higher strength. Research limitations/implications: Direct experiment on duralium rivet had not been done yet, this study only did simulation based on data that obtained form previous research that had been conducted by the researcher. Practical implications: Duralium rivet with multistage artificial aging had lower value on total deformation, shear stress, and equivalent stress Von Misses, thus duralium rivet with multistage aritificial aging had a higher strength. Originality/value: Application of duralium as a rivet with treatment of multistage artificial aging.

In the present study, a shape memory alloy (SMA) phenomenological constitutive model is proposed that is capable of describing SMA superelastic behavior and the plasticity effect. The phase transformation constitutive model, by using strain and temperature as control variables to judge the phase transformation points in order to avoid the complexity of transformation correction, incorporates plasticity described by the von Mises isotropic hardening model. Further, the proposed model is implemented into the finite element package ANSYS by the user subroutine USERMAT. The results produced by the proposed model of simulated superelastic and plasticity behavior are compared with experimental data taken from the literature.

Finite element analysis is an essential means for bipolar plate design and the optimization of the manufacturing process. However, the accuracy of the finite element simulation is significantly affected by the constitutive model, especially the yield model. In this paper, uniaxial and biaxial tensile tests were conducted to obtain the yield loci of an ultra-thin austenite stainless steel. The Yld2000 yield model was calibrated using the yield loci under different equivalent plastic strains. The microchannel stamping experiment and its finite element simulations were conducted to study the effect of yield model parameters on the finite element simulation of bipolar plate stamping. The results show that the simulation with Yld2000 calibrated by 0.004 and 0.05 equivalent plastic strain has the best prediction accuracy for the microchannel springback and thickness distribution, respectively.

An example of the experimental validation ofafinite element model of a selected heavy vehicle is presented in the paper. A truck tractor with a three axle single drop lowboy trailer and the total weight of 20 tons was selected as a representative for the tests. The major goal of the conducted studies was to develop a well validated the numerical model of a heavy vehicle applicable for computer simulation of dynamic interaction between a vehicle and a bridge or road structure. Therefore, only several components of the vehicle, affecting the vehicle-road interaction, like wheels and the suspension systems, were modelled in detail. The rest of components were simplified and considered as rigid bodies. The finite element model included fully pneumatic tires and the suspension system modelled with discrete massless springs and dampers. Numerical analyzes were performed using the LS-DYNA computer code. The validation and calibration procedure proposed in the current paper was carried out in two steps. In the first one, some parameters such as material densities, thickness of selected elements, were modified to achieve the correct mass distribution in the model based on the measured axle loads. In the next step the stiffness and damping parameters of the suspension system were evaluated based on the results of the experimental tests. The spring and damping coefflcients at all axles were adjusted until the performance of the FE model closely matched that of the actual vehicle.

Bone conduction stimulation applied on the otic capsule may be used in a conductive hearing loss treatment as an alternative to the bone conduction implants in clinical practice. A finite element study was used to evaluate the force amplitude and direction needed for the stimulation. Methods: A finite element model of a female temporal bone with a precisely reconstructed cochlea was subjected to a harmonic analysis assuming two types of stimulation. At first, the displacement amplitude in the form of air conduction stimulation was applied on the stapes footplate. Then the force amplitude was applied on the otic capsule in the form of bone conduction stimulation. The two force directions were considered: 1) the primary direction, when a typical opening is performed during mastoidectomy, and was coincident with the axis of an imaginary cone, inscribed in the opening, and 2) the direction perpendicular to the stapes footplate. The force amplitude was set so that the response from the cochlea corresponded to the result of air conduction stimulation applied on the stapes footplate. Results: The amplitude and phase of vibration and the volume displacement on the round window membrane were considered as well as vibrations of the basilar membrane, spiral lamina, and promontory. Conclusions: The cochlear response was comparable for the two types of stimulation. The efficiency of bone conduction stimulation depended on the force direction. For the primary direction, the force was a few times smaller than for the direction perpendicular to the stapes footplate.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze three patterns of mandible angle fracture treatment by means of the finite element analysis. Methods: Investigation has been based on the mandible geometry reconstructed with use of hospitalized patient CT data. The KLS Martin mini-plates with corresponding screws were used to establish proper fracture stabilization. Models were run assuming isotropic and elasto-plastic material properties of connecting devices and cortical bone. The main masticatory muscles and artificial temporomandibular joint have been incorporated to assure mandible physiological movement. The gage loading has been applied in three different locations to cover wider range of possible mastication loading cases during daily routine. A different contact conditions have been applied to the fracture plane to simulate both load bearing and sharing behaviors. Prepared FEM models reflect the most frequently used surgery’s approaches to mandible angle fracture treatment. A specific nomenclature has been introduced to describe particular model. The tension plate, with one connecting mini-plate, two-point fixation and combined fixation, both using two mini-plates respectively. Results: Performed analysis allowed for a detailed estimation of the mini-plate connection response under the applied gauge loading. The equivalent stress within the mini-plates and surrounding cortical bone have been compared between all models. Regarding the fracture plane, the contact status and pressure have been considered. Conclusions: The combined fixation model, acting as a biplanar fastener system, presents the highest flexibility and connection efficiency.

The current collapsible pot hauler uses a wooden frame, thus making much space in the working area of the fishing boat and also at this time challenging to find the best quality wood at this time. In this study, the wood material would replace by metal; the selection of the proper material is critically needed. A suitable material means the applied material has to deal with environmental conditions. Finding the appropriate material applied to the collapsible pot hauler; can be determined using a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach. After selecting the proper material, the collapsible pot hauler simulates the material stress using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation. The material for the new model of collapsible pot hauler was selected using the WSM method. The material with the highest rank (selected) is AISI 304, with a preference value of 3.58. The static strength simulation using the FEA method utilizing Solidworks Software shows that the yield strength value is still below the material properties, which a maximum value is 200. MPa, the material safety factor is the minimum value above one, which is 1.24 on the line spool plate shafts. It means that the material AISI 304 is safe to be applied to the collapsible pot hauler.
