Opis:
Thermo-chemical treatments are known to increase the fatigue life of industrial parts. Due to the imprecise consideration of residual stresses in predicting the durability of components subjected to cyclic loading and their effect on the fatigue life, the authors developed a numerical model combining the influence of residual stresses with stresses caused by bending. The authors performed the numerical simulation with the use of Finite Element Method to analyse material behaviour during cyclic loading. The residual stress state developed during nitriding was introduced onto cross-section of the numerical specimen. The goal of this work was better understanding of the real conditions of the nitride steel fatigue processes and improving the knowledge about numerical predicting of the fatigue life for parts with residual stresses. The results of simulation were compared with plane bending fatigue tests. The presented method indicates the possibility of increasing the accuracy of the fatigue analysis of elements after surface treatment, increasing its certainty and the ability to perform better optimization of service life.

Opis:
This paper presents the finite element studies on free vibration of isotropic and laminated composite cylindrical skew panels. The analysis is performed using CQUAD4 and CQUAD8 elements of MSC/NASTRAN. The effects of the panel angle, skew angle, aspect ratio and length-to-thickness-ratio on fundamental frequency of isotropic cylindrical skew panels are studied. The effects of additional parameters such as the fiber orientation angle, numbers of layers and stacking sequence on the fundamental frequency of antisymmetric composite laminates are also studied. It is found that the CQUAD8 element yields better results than the CQUAD4 element in the validation and convergence studies. The CQUAD8 element is employed for the remaining part of the studies. The fundamental frequencies are found to increase with the panel angle and skew angle. When the number of layers in the laminate is large, the variation of the fundamental frequency with the number of layers is not appreciable. The boundary conditions are found to have a significant influence on the fundamental frequency.

Riding quality and safety of rail tracks are directly influenced by track geometry; hence, their degradation along time could reduce safety and cause serious accidents. Standards propose thresholds for track geometrical parameters to keep track safety and riding comfort at an acceptable level. In this study, a method is proposed to select or define a set of proper thresholds for geometrical parameter irregularities according to desirable to safety level. The impact of track geometry irregularities on the derailment index has been investigated through the finite element model. The results suggest that twist and gauge shortage have a greater effect on the derailment index compared to the vertical profile of the track. Having the critical values of geometrical irregularities that result in derailment, safety factors of Iranian and Euro code standards in determining their thresholds are calculated and compared. It is shown that each standard has a unique set of safety factors that depend on speed and geometrical parameters.

A numerical computation-based analysis of the free vibration analysis of uniform beams with rectangular cross-sections is presented in this work using finite element analysis. The approach involves dividing the beam into segments at the crack section, which is then modelled for simulation for eigenfrequencies on the ABAQUS platform. The numerical simulation results are in excellent agreement with the findings of previous research, confirming the efficacy and applicability of the developed beam model. A sequential comprehensive approach towards analysis of the effects of the position and depth of the cracks on the natural frequencies are addressed in numerical results. The research findings confirm that the simulation model is suitable for the vibration analysis of beams or beam-like elements with different cross-sections.

A general numerical analysis theory capable of describing the behaviour of a non-uniform beam resting on variable one parameter (Winkler) foundation under a uniform partially distributed moving load is developed. The versatile numerical solution technique employed is based on the finite element and Newmark integration methods. The analysis is carried out in order to evaluate the effect of the following parameters (i) the speed of the moving load (ii) the span length of the beam (iii) two types of vibrating configurations of the beam (iv) the load’s length and (v) the elastic foundation modulus, on the dynamic behaviour of the non-uniform beam resting on the variable one-parameter foundation. Numerical examples which showed that the above parameters have significant effects on the dynamic behaviour of the moving load problem are presented.

Thick-walled cylinders are widely used in various engineering applications. In an optimal design of pressurized thick-walled cylinders, an increase in the allowable internal pressure can be achieved by an autofrettage process. In the paper, analysis is carried out to develop a procedure in which the autofrettage pressure is determined analytically. The obtained equivalent stress distribution is compared with those of the conventional solid wall and of several multi-layer vessels. The results of the analytical approach are verified by FEM modelling. Tensile tests have been carried out to determine the real mechanical properties of the material of the vessel and to create a material model. The presented example illustrates the advantages of the autofrettage technique.

Opis:
In this work, a finite element study is proposed by using the Comsol Multiphysics software to evaluate the effects of microcrack shape, size and direction on the poroelastic behaviors of a single osteon. Methods: This finite element model is established by using the Comsol Multiphysics software, and we just focus on the comparison of the influences of those microcrack geometric parameters on the osteonal fluid pressure and velocity. Results: The results show that: (1) microcracks in the osteon wall can induce a release of the fluid pressure, but enlarge the velocity in this region; (2) equal-area microcrack with ellipsoid-like shape produced a larger fluid pressure and velocity fields in the osteon than that of rectangular shape; (3) in the elliptic microcracks, the longer of the length (major semi-axis) induces a smaller fluid pressure and velocity amplitudes, whereas the width (minor axis) has little effect; (4) the direction of the microcracks (major axial direction) has an limited influence area around about 1/15 of the osteon cross-sectional area. Conclusions: This model permits the linking of the external loads and microcracks to the osteonal fluid pressure and velocity, which can be used for other purpose associate microcracks with the mechanotransduction and bone remodeling.

Opis:
This article focuses on the finite element analysis (FEA) of the nonlinear behavior of a layered functionally graded material (FGM) plate as concerns displacement, stresses, critical buckling load and fundamental frequency. The material properties of each layer in an FGM plate are assessed according to a ceramic based simple power law distribution and the rules of mixture. The finite element model of a layered FGM plate is developed using ANSYS®15.0 software. The developed finite element model is used to study the static and dynamic responses of an FGM plate. In this paper, the effects of power law distribution, thickness ratio, aspect ratio and boundary conditions are investigated for central displacement, transverse shear stress, transverse normal stress, critical buckling load and fundamental frequency, and the obtained FEA results are in sound agreement with the literature test data results. Since the FGM is used in a high temperature environment, the FE analysis is performed for the FGM plate under a thermal field and then correlated. Finally, the FGM plate is analyzed under a thermomechanical load by using the current FE concept.

Opis:
Damage of bone structures is mainly conditioned by bone quality related to the bone strength. The purpose of this work was to present a simple and reliable numerical treatment of a quasi-brittle damage constitutive model coupled with two different elastic modulus and to compare the numerical results with the experimental ones. Methods: To achieve this goal, a QCT based finite element model was developed within the framework of CDM (Continuum Damage Mechanics) and implemented in the FE code (ABAQUS). It described the propagation of brittle cracks which will help to predict the ultimate load fracture of a human vertebra by reproducing the experimental failure under quasi-static compressive loading paths of nineteen cadaveric lumbar vertebral bodies. Results: The numerical computations delivered by the proposed method showed a better agreement with the available experimental results when bone volume fraction related Young’s modulus (E(BV/TV)) is used instead of density related Young’s modulus (E(ρ)). Also, the study showed that the maximum relative error (%) in failure was 8.47% when E(BV/TV) was used, whereas the highest relative error (%) was 68.56% when E(ρ) was adopted. Finally, a mesh sensitivity analysis revealed that the element size has a weak incidence on the computed load magnitude. Conclusions: The numerical results provided by the proposed quasi-brittle damage model combined with E(BV/TV) are a reliable tool for the vertebrae fracture prediction.

An analysis method is thus first developed highlighting stresses distribution in the junction to dimension the functional performance area. A description of the joint characteristics is presented. Numerical simulations, comparing the complete and simplified finite element models relevance, are then carried out. The integration of results of this analysis in the design of multiple bolted joints structures in finally presented. Experiments on a testbed, where a viscoelastic material is introduced in joints interfaces to enhance global damping, validate the approach developed.

Opis:
Riveted joints are a common location of fatigue cracks in aircraft metal structures. Fatigue life of such joints as well as a place of cracks nucleation is strongly influence by a stress distribution in sheets, which is a result of residual stresses (mainly after riveting) and stresses induced by external loads. Stress distribution in two-row lap joint was investigated with the use of Finite Element Method. The joint consist of two 1.5 mm sheets and two protruding rivets with diameter equal to 4 mm, made of 2024 T3 (sheets) and 2117 T4 (rivets) aluminium alloys. The simulations covered a riveting process and tensile stages. The 3D models of joint with the universal rivets and with the brazier, rivets with a compensator were prepared. Elastoplastic material properties as well as geometric nonlinearity and contact phenomena were included. The results of simulations show that the residual stress distribution after release of tensile loading varies significantly from the distribution after riveting only. This fact should therefore be taken into account in a fatigue life estimation of such joints performed based on a FE calculation. The paper presents also the influence of the analysed rivet geometry on the stress distribution at the sheets faying surfaces.

It enables one to obtain the second-order accuracy of the solution. The presented formulations are illustrated by a number of numerical examples. The influence of finite element mesh density for the obtained results is discussed using the analysis of the spatial bar dome.

Effective machine tool design needs to take into account various kinematic configurations and possible combinations of structural parts, which meet the requirements of both the structural properties on one hand and technology and cost limitation on the other hand. Prior to a detailed developing a certain machine tool structure, an expert based decision on the machine tool conception needs to be performed. A high number of design variants should be explored in a short time. Fulfilling those demands leads to developing a machine tool modular models, enabling easy changing the kinematic configuration or various structural parts. In the paper the techniques for effective component coupling and model order reduction using mode truncation or Krylov subspace based technique for creating the machine tool coupled models are introduced. Case studies considering real machine tool structures are given. High quality of Krylov subspace reduction technique in connection with multipoint constraint surface coupling is shown both in terms of dynamic properties of the reduced multibody model and a very low time demands at the same time.

In order to study mechanical properties of a large-scale spherical bearing, a full-scale finite element model of the spherical bearing was established by using ABAQUS software, and the mechanical properties of the spherical bearing under four working conditions were simulated respectively when the upper bearing plate had different inclination angles. The ultimate bearing capacity of the spherical bearing under vertical tension was analyzed emphatically. The research results show that, in practical applications, the change in bearing capacity caused by the inclination angle of the upper bearing plate should be considered, and the wedge-shaped part should be strengthened.
