Opis:
The study embraced 159 nest boxes placed in three different study plots in the Wielkopolski National Park in western Poland. In the first season, 64% of nest boxes were occupied by four species: great tit Parus major, blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, Eurasian nuthatch Sitta europaea and European pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca. The dominant species were great and blue tits. Over 80% of broods of great tits and blue tits were reared successfully. Birds preferred nest boxes located in plots with domination of oaks and Scots pine and with rich underbrush. Woodpeckers damaged entrances of 70% of the nest boxes, but did not cause any brood losses. In 13% of the boxes nests of hornets, bumblebees and wasps were found. Bumblebees chose boxes with a bird nest material, whereas wasps and hornets avoided sites occupied by the birds. In general, the insects had a small impact on breeding success of birds and caused failure of only 3% of all broods. Obtained results show that nest boxes in forests may increase density of the most common cavity nesters and secure their high breeding success.

Opis:
The study was conducted in Lasy Parczewskie forest complex in eastern Poland in two periods: 1991−1993 and 2002−2004. We analysed the location of 384 nests belonging to 6 species of diurnal birds of prey that are common in Poland: Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), White−tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), Buzzard (Buteo buteo), and Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina). We found that all species preferred particular age classes of tree stands (Fig. 2). Sparrowhawk chose tree−stands at age of between 30 and 50 years, Honey Buzzard – older than 50 years, Buzzard and Lesser Spotted Eagle – older than 70 years, Goshawk – older than 80 years, and White−tailed Eagle – older than 90 years. Beside the fact that the Parczew Forests are cultivated and harvested in a common manner, they play an important role for all the species concerned.

Opis:
This paper presents an overview of bird research carried out in the Borki Primeval Forest during the last 30 years. The Borki Primeval Forest can be considered as one of the most important forest bird sites in Poland. Its avifauna comprises 139 breeding species, including 11 rare and endangered species listed in the Polish Red Data Book of Animals as well as 30 species listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive. Despite its relatively small area, the Borki Primeval Forest holds at least 1% of Polish breeding population of as many as 12 bird species . For seven out of these species it is one of the most important breeding sites in the country. The avifauna of the Borki Primeval Forest consists mostly of typical forest birds including 24 indicator species which are associated with natural forests. The richness of bird species in the Borki Primeval Forest and the abundance of several valuable groups of breeding species are the result of a high landscape and habitat diversity as well as a relatively small anthropopression combined with a high degree of naturalness of forest stands.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to review the most important results from the last 40 years of intense ornithological research conducted in the Białowieża Forest. Furthermore, we discuss the threats that may destroy the unique ecology and characteristics of this forest. Studying the avifauna of the Białowieża Forest provides us with a good general knowledge about natural ecological conditions and relationships, which prevailed in temperate European forests in the past. The avifauna of the Białowieża Forest is characterized by features associated with primeval habitats such as the stability of communities over time, high species richness, relatively low densities, high proportion of hole-nesting birds, very high predation pressure and weak, insignificant competition interactions. This emphasizes the importance of predation, excess of nesting sites for cavity nesting birds, high abundance of food, especially for insectivorous species and fluctuation of bird population size due to rodent outbreaks (pulsed resources). The most severe threats for the avifauna of the Białowieża Forest are: rejuvenation of tree stands, removal of dead wood, fragmentation of old-growth stands, change of tree stand composition (reducing the proportion of some tree species). In order to expand our ecological knowledge about birds, we should keep the Białowieża Forest fully protected for years to come. The main priority should be the maintenance of natural processes changing the forest’s species composition.
