Opis:
Information technology of the 20th and 21st centuries “opened the way” to the automatic assessment of anthropometric facial features, facial gestures and other characteristic behaviours. Recognition is a very complex technical problem with a signifi cant practical effect. There are dedicated applications for this purpose. The article presents face recognition algorithms for 2D images, for three-dimensional spaces, and methods using neural networks. Linear and nonlinear, local and global, and hybrid methods of facial recognition are presented. The study understands the strengths and weaknesses of the laws governing the use of face recognition technology and, if possible, analyses their effi ciency. The methodological review has been created in connection with the idea of the author’s own fast algorithms and facial recognition.

This paper describes the design and implementation of the integrated microsystem for face recognition in digital images, based on a new SoC Zynq from Xilinx [4]. Zynq is a new class of SoCs which contains an industry-standard ARM dual-core Cortex-A9 processing system and 28 nm programmable logic. Face recognition is performed by the well known PCA algorithm (Principal Component Analysis) [1-2]. The proposed microsystem creates database from a number of source images and then identifies faces by PCA fitness. The algorithm was implemented in a twofold way: (1) using MATLAB/PC, and (2) hardware platform based on ZedBoard from Avnet with Zynq XC7Z020 SoC. Both versions of implementations were tested in terms of complexity and speed. It was proved that the hardware implementation worked properly and gave exactly the same results as a software algorithm running on the PC platform. Experimental tests of the PCA-based face recognition system were performed with the use of ORL database [6]. The hardware implementation is relatively slower but fast enough for most real applications of face detection systems in mobile, handheld terminals. Since the proposed microsystem is based on the embedded dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and uses Linux kernel it can be easily extended and connected to other digital devices using standard communication interfaces (including wireless channels).

A consistent particle filtering-based framework for the purpose of parallel face tracking and recognition from video sequences is proposed. A novel approach to defining randomized, particle filtering-driven local face features for the purpose of recognition is proposed. The potential of cumulating classification decisions based on the proposed feature set definition is evaluated. By applying cumulation mechanisms to the classification results determined from single frames and with the use of particle-filtered features, good recognition rates are obtained at the minimal computational cost. The proposed framework can operate in real-time on a typical modern PC. Additionally, the application of cumulation mechanisms makes the framework resistant to brief visual distortions, such as occlusions, head rotations or face expressions. A high performance is also obtained on low resolution images (video frames). Since the framework is based on the particle filtering principle, it is easily tunable to various application requirements (security level, hardware constraints).

Opis:
The paper presents a novel approach to Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) applied to visible and thermal infrared spectrum facial images. In the typical CCA framework biometrical information is transformed from original feature space into the space of canonical variates, and further processing takes place in this space. Extracted features are maximally correlated in canonical variates space, making it possible to expose, investigate and model latent relationships between measured variables. In the paper the CCA is implemented along two directions (along rows and columns of pixel matrix of dimension M x N) using a cascade scheme. The first stage of transformation proceeds along rows of data matrices. Its results are reorganized by transposition. These reorganized matrices are inputs to the second processing stage, namely basic CCA procedure performed along the rows of reorganized matrices, resulting in fact in proceeding along the columns of input data matrix. The so called cascading 2DCCA method also solves the Small Sample Size problem, because instead of the images of size MxN pixels in fact we are using N images of size M x 1 pixels and M images of size 1 x N pixels. In the paper several numerical experiments performed on FERET and Equinox databases are presented.

Opis:
Biometric identification systems, i.e. the systems that are able to recognize humans by analyzing their physiological or behavioral characteristics, have gained a lot of interest in recent years. They can be used to raise the security level in certain institutions or can be treated as a convenient replacement for PINs and passwords for regular users. Automatic face recognition is one of the most popular biometric technologies, widely used even by many low-end consumer devices such as netbooks. However, even the most accurate face identification algorithm would be useless if it could be cheated by presenting a photograph of a person instead of the real face. Therefore, the proper liveness measurement is extremely important. In this paper we present a method that differentiates between video sequences showing real persons and their photographs. First we calculate the optical flow of the face region using the Farnebäck algorithm. Then we convert the motion information into images and perform the initial data selection. Finally, we apply the Support Vector Machine to distinguish between real faces and photographs. The experimental results confirm that the proposed approach could be successfully applied in practice.

New technologies bring not only many opportunities but also many risks. Some of them we have already got used to, while others still pose a challenge. The latter undoubtedly includes constantly evolving algorithms. Every day we learn about new possibilities for their application. Unfortunately, these possibilities or applications do not always go hand in hand with the existing rights and freedoms and increasingly pose a threat of their infringement. Recently, research results have been published on the recognition of individuals’ voting preferences from their faces by an algorithm. Such a possibility in application carries the risk of violation of constitutional rights, including the right to privacy. In this paper, this problem will be developed. First, the essence of the right to privacy will be examined and then, based on the research on facial recognition biometrics, I will present the scope and consequences of its violation.

Opis:
In this work, a modified version of the elastic bunch graph matching (EBGM) algorithm for face recognition is introduced. First, faces are detected by using a fuzzy skin detector based on the RGB color space. Then, the fiducial points for the facial graph are extracted automatically by adjusting a grid of points to the result of an edge detector. After that, the position of the nodes, their relation with their neighbors and their Gabor jets are calculated in order to obtain the feature vector defining each face. A self-organizing map (SOM) framework is shown afterwards. Thus, the calculation of the winning neuron and the recognition process are performed by using a similarity function that takes into account both the geometric and texture information of the facial graph. The set of experiments carried out for our SOM-EBGM method shows the accuracy of our proposal when compared with other state-of the-art methods.

Opis:
Biometric databases are important components that help improve the performanceof state-of-the-art recognition applications. The availability of more andmore challenging data is attracting the attention of researchers, who are systematicallydeveloping novel recognition algorithms and increasing the accuracyof identification. Surprisingly, most of the popular face datasets (like LFW orIJBA) are not fully unconstrained. The majority of the available images werenot acquired on-the-move, which reduces the amount of blurring that is causedby motion or incorrect focusing. Therefore, the COMPACT database for studyingless-cooperative face recognition is introduced in this paper. The datasetconsists of high-resolution images of 108 subjects acquired in a fully automatedmanner as people go through the recognition gate. This ensures that the collecteddata contains real-world degradation factors: different distances, expressions, occlusions, pose variations, and motion blur. Additionally, the authorsconducted a series of experiments that verified the face-recognition performanceon the collected data.

This article describes guidelines and recommendations for acquisition of databases for facial analysis. New devices and methods for both face recognition and facial expression recognition are constantly developed. In order to evaluate these devices and methods, dedicated datasets are recorded. Acquisition of a database for facial analysis is not an easy task and requires taking into account multiple issues. Based on our experience with recording databases for facial expression recognition, we provide guidelines regarding the acquisition process. Multiple aspects of such process are discussed in this work, namely selection of sensors and data streams, design and structure of the database, technical aspects, acquisition conditions and design of the user interface. Recommendations how to address these aspects are provided and justified. An acquisition software, designed according to these guidelines, is also discussed. The software was used for recording an extended version of our previous facial expression recognition database and proved to both ensure correct data and be convenient for the recorded subjects.

Opis:
Recognizing faces under various lighting conditions is a challenging problem in artificial intelligence and applications. In this paper we describe a new face recognition algorithm which is invariant to illumination. We first convert image files to the logarithm domain and then we implement them using the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT) which yields images approximately invariant to changes in illumination change. We classify the images by the collaborative representation-based classifier (CRC). We also perform the following sub-band transformations: (i) we set the approximation sub-band to zero if the noise standard deviation is greater than 5; (ii) we then threshold the two highest frequency wavelet sub-bands using bivariate wavelet shrinkage. (iii) otherwise, we set these two highest frequency wavelet sub-bands to zero. On obtained images we perform the inverse DTCWT which results in illumination invariant face images. The proposed method is strongly robust to Gaussian white noise. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms several existing methods on the Extended Yale Face Database B and the CMU-PIE face database.

The paper presents the results of investigations concerning face recognition systems based on a simple, fast and efficient feature extractor method. It is based on analysis of the local image symmetry. An additional advantage of the described method is the fact that it is light invariant feature extractor - so it is called LIFE. This benefit (robust on the light conditions) makes it possible to use the method practically as the hardware implementation in real monitoring systems. The idea of LIFE operation is described in Section 2 of the paper. The performed experiments, presented in Section 3 show that LIFE is very efficient in comparison with other simple feature extractor methods - the results of recognition are given in Table 1. In spite of the method simplicity, the proposed approach proved high effectiveness which may be further increased by joining LIFE into a parallel structure with another simple feature extractor (it is described in Section 4). The presented feature extractor enables implementation in hardware system (simplicity and efficiency) such as cameras of the monitoring system. This idea is discussed in the conclusions.

Over the past few years, a huge increase in the number of various computer vision applications can be observed. These are widely used in such areas as video surveillance, medical diagnostics, biometrics recognition, and the automotive and military industries. Most of these solutions take advantage of high-resolution cameras in order to obtain high-quality images. Surprisingly, little attention is paid in the literature to the practical implementation of off- the-shelf image acquisition systems. Most of the available solutions are composed of custom-developed electronic devices that use specialized multi-core DSPs and/or FPGA technology. Therefore, a novel realization of a scalable and comprehensive image acquisition system based on synchronized high-resolution Gigabit Ethernet cameras is presented in this paper. The proposed solution allows for the connection of multiple cameras along with any number of external illumination modules. The selected devices can be synchronized with each other in user-defined configurations; hence, a designed solution can be easily integrated in both simple and complex applications. The authors describe the design and implementation processes of the proposed platform in detail. The performance issues that can occur in such systems are presented and discussed. The obtained results are encouraging and useful for the development of similar solutions.

Face recognition is one of the applications in image processing that recognizes or checks an individual's identity. 2D images are used to identify the face, but the problem is that this kind of image is very sensitive to changes in lighting and various angles of view. The images captured by 3D camera and stereo camera can also be used for recognition, but fairly long processing times is needed. RGB-D images that Kinect produces are used as a new alternative approach to 3D images. Such cameras cost less and can be used in any situation and any environment. This paper shows the face recognition algorithms’ performance using RGB-D images. These algorithms calculate the descriptor which uses RGB and Depth map faces based on local binary pattern. Those images are also tested for the fusion of LBP and DCT methods. The fusion of LBP and DCT approach produces a recognition rate of 97.5% during the experiment
