    Opis:
    Wacław Nałkowski is certainly an outstanding figure for Polish geography. In many publications he has also been classified as positivist, anti-metaphysician, evolutionist, anticleric and socialist. Perhaps these designations are not always right, since in his works one can also find the ideas that do not quite match the labels conferred. His broad interests, diligence, criticism in selecting arguments, and the ability to see the essence of complex phenomena of different nature (both natural and cultural), yielded several interesting reflections contained in numerous articles and books. It should be emphasized that among his written thoughts and observations there are also those that resisted rapid changes in culture and environment that occurred in the century after his death, and can also be repeated today. Among them surely are his geographic and educational concepts. However, Nałkowski’s interests extend far beyond geography. The article focuses on interpretation of Nałkowski’s statements concerning the issues associated with the development of civilization, evolution, nature, as well as philosophy and sociology of science.

    The hard core of a theory is understood here as a set of those of its claims, which if contradicted by facts, lead to complete abandoning of the theory (in other cases scientists rather modify theoretical statements of minor importance). I argue therefore that it is an illusion that a set of statements about variation and natural selection is such a hard core of Darwinistic theory. In real practice these statements are compatible with almost all imaginable facts, therefore they have non-empirical character. They are only a camouflage for deeper and more fundamental claims, philosophical ones, and more exactly: materialistic, naturalistic and anti-religious ones. In this paper the I analyze a number of citations proving that leading evolutionists, from Darwin onwards, openly accepted this philosophical beliefs which are the true hard core of evolution.

    Opis:
    Contemporary discussion on the phenomenon of life is a meeting point for natural sciences and religion. In their dialogue, two extreme opinions prevail, which make us understand life either as a coincidental product of evolution or as an intelligent design created by an external intervention. Both views are reductionist and represent a misunderstanding of the multi-planar character of human cognition. Mature theological insight should not follow this path. Therefore, the article is an attempt to look at the phenomenon of life in a different way. It takes up the theological interpretation of biological life, according to the medieval-originating category of vestigium Dei. However, this notion must be reconstructed in such a way that it takes into account the semantic matrix that developed around it in the twentieth century. The newly developed category of vestigium is a hermeneutical key that allows us to better understand what it means that life, already in its basic manifestations, has a transcendental reference to God, as His trace.
    Współczesna dyskusja nad fenomenem życia jest miejscem spotkania nauk przyrodniczych i religii. W ich dialogu przeważają dwie skrajne opinie, które każą rozumieć życie albo jako przypadkowy produkt ewolucji, albo jako inteligentny projekt powstały dzięki zewnętrznej interwencji. Obydwa spojrzenia są redukcjonistyczne i stanowią przejaw niezrozumienia wielopłaszczyznowości ludzkiego poznania. Dojrzały wgląd teologiczny nie powinien podążać tą ścieżką. Dlatego artykuł jest próbą innego spojrzenia na fenomen życia. Podjęta zostaje w nim teologiczna interpretacja życia biologicznego według wywodzącej się ze średniowiecza kategorii vestigium Dei. Pojęcie to musi być jednak przebudowane tak, by uwzględniało osnowę semantyczną, która narosła wokół niego w XX wieku. Opracowana na nowo kategoria vestigium stanowi klucz hermeneutyczny, który pozwala lepiej zrozumieć, co to znaczy, że życie już w swoich podstawowych przejawach posiada transcendentalne odniesienie do Boga jako ślad.

    W artykule przedstawiona została próba wskazania płaszczyzny dyskusji ewolucjonistów z kreacjonistami, która umożliwiałaby dialog zwiększający szansę wypracowania spójnego światopoglądu łączącego elementy wiedzy naukowej i wiary religijnej. W odniesieniu do różnych typów wiedzy zaproponowane zostało wyróżnienie trzech poziomów: 1) przedmiot badań, 2) wiedza o tym przedmiocie, 3) interpretacja tej wiedzy. Dialog może być prowadzony już na poziomie drugim, lecz z poszanowaniem wzajemnej autonomii i ukierunkowaniem raczej na inspirację, niż na integrację. Właściwą płaszczyzną dialogu jest poziom trzeci: interpretacja wiedzy oraz budowanie wizji świata i człowieka. Celem dialogu na tym poziomie jest integracja wszystkich elementów światopoglądu i dążenie do wyjaśnienia i zrozumienia całej rzeczywistości.
    This article seeks to indicate a platform for discussion between evolutionists and creationists, which will enable dialogue and increase the chance of developing a coherent worldview that combines elements of scientific knowledge and religious faith. In the context of various types of knowledge, three levels are indicated: (1) the subject of research, (2) knowledge of this subject, and (3) interpretation of this knowledge. Dialogue can be undertaken and conducted already at the second level, but only accompanied by both respect for mutual autonomy and a focus on inspiration rather than integration. The appropriate level of dialogue is the third level: the interpretation of knowledge and building an overarching view of the world and man. The aim of dialogue at this level is to integrate all elements of a worldview and to strive to explain and understand the whole reality.
