Opis:
Earlier studies (1972–1987) on the occurrence of unionid bivalves in the eutrophicated Lake Mikołajskie (Masurian Lakeland, NE. Poland) were continued in 1992–2008. Of the five recorded species (Unio tumidus, U. pictorum, Anodonta cygnea, A. anatina, and Pseudanodonta complanata), A. cygnea and P. complanata disappeared by 1987, whereas U. pictorum was observed sporadically at that time, and the unionid occurrence zone was markedly reduced. Beginning in 1992, a pronounced increase in abundance of U. tumidus was observed, and since 2002–2003, a decline of the other two species. Since 2003 the maximal original vertical distribution of U. tumidus (down to ca. 5 m) was re-established. The size and age structure of its population changed markedly during the study. No individuals of shell length exceeding 55 mm and aged more than 5–6 years were recorded since 1987. Between 1972 and 1987 one-year-old individuals prevailed, whereas in the following years the age structure changed slowly, and in 2008 two- to four-year-old bivalves were most frequent. The potential effects of changes in trophy and the effects of other factors, e.g. decline of Dreissena polymorpha, on changes in the occurrence of Unionidae in Lake Mikołajskie are discussed.

Opis:
A study was carried out in a shallow, eutrophic Oświn Lake, within Seven Islands Reserve (north-eastern Poland), in order to determine the infection of fish with monogeneans as sensitive indicators of water quality. This paper presents comparative analysis of the occurrence of Monogenea in fishes from two, distinctly separated pools of the lake, differing in environmental conditions. The impact of fish size and sampling season on the infection parameters was also analyzed. Material and methods. In 1998 and 1999, a total of 1091 fish representing 8 dominant species were examined. Samples were collected four times a year (in May, July, August, and October) simultaneously from the eastern and western parts of the lake. Results. 16 species of Monogenea (and some unidentified specimeus) occurred in the fish examined, most of them from the Dactylogyridae family: Dactylogyrus sphyrna, D. auriculatus, D. intermedius, D. anchoratus, D. falcatus, D. tincae, D. wunderi, D. zandti, D. difformis, D. nanus, D. distinguendus, D. crucifer, D. caballeroi. Furthermore, Tetraonchus monenteron (Tetraonchidae), Gyrodactylus elegans (Gyrodactylidae), and Paradiplozoon megan (Diplozoidae) were detected. Monogenea occurred abundantly on the gills of pike, roach, rudd, white bream, carp bream and crucian carp, but rather sporadically in tench and perch. The highest species variety and diversity of monogenean guilds were detected in carp bream and roach. It was proved that D. crucifer and D. difformis were significantly more abundant in the western pool compared to the eastern one. Infection of fish with Dactylogyridae was season-dependent, contrary to the infection of pike with T. monenteron. Intensity of infection of white bream with D. sphyrna and roach with D. crucifer increased with fish body length; such a relationship did not appear for the other monogeneans and their hosts. Conclusion. Presence of common Monogenea in the fish examined, lack of rare species, poor diversity of monogenean guilds and relatively low infection rate could be connected with the low stability of the lake environment. Location-dependent occurrence of D. crucifer and D. difformis indicated that the exchange between fish groups from the eastern and western parts of the lake is limited.

In this study we present calibration/validation activities associated with satellite MERIS image processing and aimed at estimating chl a and CDOM in the Curonian Lagoon. Field data were used to validate the performances of two atmospheric correction algorithms, to build a band-ratio algorithm for chl a and to validate MERIS-derived maps. The neural network-based Case 2 Regional processor was found suitable for mapping CDOM; for chl a the band-ratio algorithm applied to image data corrected with the 6S code was found more appropriate. Maps were in agreement with in situ measurements. This study confirmed the importance of atmospheric correction to estimate water quality and demonstrated the usefulness of MERIS in investigating eutrophic aquatic ecosystems.

Opis:
The causes of the eutrophication of Lake Jagiełek, situated around 6 km south-west of Olsztyn, were investigated in the hydrological years 1998-2004. The catchment area of this water body is situated in the watershed zone of the Łyna and Pasłęka rivers. The lake is subject to advanced eutrophication. As regards precipitation amount, the analysed period consisted of three dry years, two normal years and one wet year. Due to the occurrence of three successive dry years and higher evaporation resulting from increased air temperatures (by 0.5°C on average), the lake shallowed with periodic exposure of bottom sediments in the shoreline zone. The periodic exposure and inundation of sections of the lake bottom has led to intense mineralization of bottom sediments. This process contributes to secondary contamination of surface water with mineral substances, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. The investigated water body is situated in a watershed zone and is characterised by low and stable electrolytic conductivity (113 µS·cm-1 on average) and low pH of water (6.72 on average) which periodically reaches 4.70. The concentration levels of biogenic elements (nitrogen and phosphorus compounds) are subject to seasonal fluctuation. Relatively high concentrations of N-NO3 (1.25 mg dm-3 on average) were observed in the winter and spring, while low levels of this compound (0.18 mg·dm-3 on average) were reported in the summer and autumn. P-PO4 concentrations were marked by a growing trend from 0.26 mg· dm-3 on average in the spring to 0.70 mg·dm-3 on average in the summer. A high water load with biogenic elements, whose concentrations significantly exceeded the allowable and dangerous levels of N and P according to Vollenweider’s criteria, speeded up the eutrophication process and stimulated the gradual self-decline of the entire ecosystem. The restoration of ecological balance in the surveyed.
Powoduje to wtórne zanieczyszczenie wód powierzchniowych składnikami mineralnymi, głównie związkami azotu i fosforu. W zbiorniku zlokalizowanym w strefie wododziałowej wykazano niskie i stabilne wartości przewodnictwa elektrolitycznego (średnio 113 µS·cm-1), niski odczyn wody (średnio pH 6,72), osiągający okresowo pH 4,70 oraz sezonową cykliczność stężeń biogenów (związków azotu i fosforu). Stosunkowo wysokie stężenia N-NO3 (średnio 1,25 mg dm-3) występowały w okresie zimowo-wiosennym, a niskie (średnio 0,18 mg·dm-3) w okresie letnio-jesiennym. Stężenia P-PO4 wykazywały tendencję wzrastającą od średnio 0,26 mg·dm-3 wiosną do średnio 0,70 mg·dm-3 latem. Duże obciążenie wody substancjami biogennymi, przekraczające wielokrotnie dopuszczalne i niebezpieczne poziomy N i P, przyśpieszyło eutrofizację wody i spowodowało ewoluowanie całego ekosystemu w kierunku stopniowej samolikwidacji zbiornika. Odtworzenie równowagi ekologicznej w badanym ekosystemie, powinno opierać się na sezonowości zjawisk klimatycznych i hydrologicznych występujących w regionie przy ponownym włączeniu zbiornika w poziomy obieg wody.
