Opis:: The paper focuses on the Lithuanian language in the context of other Baltic languages. A brief history of Lithuanian in the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania is presented. It is done with reference to its oldest written records and the sociolinguistic underpinnings of the language. The national and linguistic revival of the Lituanians and the beginnings of scholarly interest in that language are briefly presented.

Opis:: Language differentiation is an unquestionable fact, nonetheless its magnitude is not. The causes of the divergence are twofold: the first rests in our paucity of knowledge about the large number of languages; the other derives from the fact that there are no clear-cut linguistic criteria to differentiate between an individual language and a dialect of a language. Out of controversies within the status of such and similar tools of social communication rose the popularity of the concept and term of ethnolect. That languages are differentiated across the world can be approached from two points of view: a practical and communicative one (that can be the position held by communication engineering) and an anthropocultural one.

The article attempts to evaluate the monograph by Anna Wilk devoted to the history of a little-known minority, the Lemkos, throughout the twentieth century – from the times of the Second Republic of Poland to the Polish People’s Republic. It critically discusses the author’s approach to the source material and literature on the subject used in the book.

Opis:: Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird dem sprachlichen Mischcode, dem Ethnolekt Rechnung getragen. Nicht nur die sprachlichen Abweichungen des Ethnolekts dem Standarddeutschen gegenüber, sondern auch dessen Vorläufer, historische Bedingungen samt ihren linguistischen Manifestationen werden hier aufgegriffen und näher beleuchtet.
The subject of this paper is a mixed variant of German which arose in large urban agglomerations with participation of mixed youth, indigenous German youth and youth of German lineage. The text outlines historical phenomena, and also linguistic theories which underlie and account for the diversity of mixed code with regard to the standard language.
