Bunjevci from the region of Bačka are a deeply divided community: some of them believe they are a separate ethnic group with a distinct language, while others claim they are a subgroup of Croats and speak a Croatian dialect. The paper explains historical roots of the group’s divided ethnic consciousness and explores its consequences on the construction of their contemporary identities. First, the formation of Bunjevci as a pre-modern ethnicity in Dalmatia is discussed. It is followed by an account of historical experiences of those of them who later migrated to the Danube region in Hungary. The paper is concluded by a comparison between the Bunjevci’s two models of language regulation and politics of memory.

This article sets out to study the process of uniting the Buryat community and the relevance of different levels of ethnic identity as reflected in genealogical myths. Among important markers of the ethnic self-presentation of Buryats were mythical ancestors of the Buryat people (Bulagat, Ekhirit, Zonkhi, etc.). The emergence of these characters is closely connected with the history of the development of the Buryat people and reflects certain stages in the consolidation of ethnic groups into a united community that calls itself “the Buryats.” The earliest of these stages (in the early Middle Ages) is reflected in the genealogical myth of Bulagat, Ekhirit and Khoridoi and their heavenly wives – swan maidens. In the 14th–17th centuries, the Baikal region saw a new wave of ethnogenesis, marked by consolidation of large tribes of Bulagats, Ekhirits, Khori-Tumats and other ethnic groups into a single community opposed to the Mongols. During this period, the storylines of the main Buryat ethnogenetic myths were revitalized and new characters were added to the genealogy that represented different ethnic groups of the Buryats.

In this essay I will analyse selected aspects of the process of arranging traditional space in the face of the challenges of modernity. Progressive globalisation, cultural changes, social transformations-all these processes have influenced the ways local communities manage their territory. I will mainly deal with the phenomenon of reterritorialisation, focus on how identification with territory is reinforced in local communities. I will show how cultural legacy, characteristic of a given region, shapes particular versions of locality and globalisation. The role of ethnicity in these processes is of special interest. Is ethnic identification still taken into account in social strategies embedded in the processes of globalisation? In the first part I argue that modernity introduces irreversible changes to the character of existing and ethnically defined space. The second part includes arguments supporting the thesis about the necessity of adjusting to modern strategies of region management, which must entail partially giving up territorial identity protection. In spite of this, in the process of ethnic construction of a region, space seems to constitute a social framework which determines points of reference for collective action and conceptualisation of new reality

Opis:
As Amartya Sen has rightly noticed (Sen 2005: 182), one of Buddhist main principles was attaching special importance to discussions and dialogue. This argumentative tradition, which is traceable in Buddhism from the very beginning, for example in the texts of the Sutta Piṭaka or the so-called “Buddhist councils,” especially the third of them in the time of Aśoka, who in his edicts advocated respect for dissenting views, finds its exemplification in the Milindapañha — a Pāli Buddhist text, missing original version of which was probably written in Gāndhārī. The analysis of this text, taking into account a variety of possible influences in a multicultural environment of the region of its origin – Gandhāra and during its transmission, as well as the applied artistic means, will give us the opportunity to reconsider the crucial questions regarding the religious and ethnic identity of the Indo-Greek ruler and the attractiveness of Buddhism to the Greeks living in the region of Gandhāra in the second and first century BC. These questions, in a broader perspective, relate to the matters of the dialogue on its many levels: socio-political, intercultural, interpersonal and intrapersonal. Analysis of these levels enables us to notice the essence of the dialogue and its importance.

Today, ethnic minorities have entered the second wave of emancipation. They are fighting for the right to cultural autonomy, the right to have their own past, history and social memory. The aim of the article is to learn how ethnic minorities “recover” lost social memory in the area of childhood memory and how they work to create ethnic identity again. The text is composed of four parts. The first presents selected aspects of childhood culture. The second is presents Pierre Nora’s concept of memory. The third is presents the results of research on selected ethnic literary texts (Kashubian and Silesian). The author’s conducted semantic and structural analyzes (in the approach of Roland Barthes and Paul Ricoeur). The analyzes allowed us to recognize ethnic childhood as a space of existential suffering and a time of loss of ethnic identity. The answer – in childhood and adulthood – are specific identity strategies. they are aids in constructing a new ethnic identity. The fourth part is Summary and reflection closing the text.

This paper is a report of some studies conducted by the author in the Roma community in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. After a brief introduction and characteristics of the surveyed group, the theoretical basis of the research and the methodological approach was presented. The project was supposed to be an attempt to show the difference between the education of Roma and of the dominant community in their country of residence. The research objective of the project was to identify the Roma perception of education and school duty, to identify and understand the relationship between the Roma identity and their relation to education and participation. Three areas were analysed: identities, culture, and education. The identification of their identities, their participation in culture and the education of the culturally dominant group are indicated. The conclusions concern the current situation of the Roma in these areas and possible recommendations or solutions for the future.

The latest research on language and identity of Lithuanian emigrantsReviewEmigrantai: kalba ir tapatybė (Emigrants: Language and identity), collective monograph, academic editor Meilutė Ramonienė, Vilnius: Vilniaus universiteto leidykla, 2015.This review discusses the collective monograph Emigrantai: kalba ir tapatybė (Emigrants: Language and identity), authored by a team of Lithuanian Studies scholars led by Vilnius University professor Meilutė Ramonienė and published in Vilnius in 2015. The volume brings the results of studies on the functioning of the Lithuanian language among emigrants conducted in 2011–2013, and presents its situation in North and South America, Australia, Africa and different European countries (Great Britain, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Spain, France, Luxembourg, Italy and others). The study only excludes Lithuanian diaspora in Eastern European countries. The volume is based on a vast empirical base consisting of 20,206 sociolinguistic questionnaires (including 66 questions each) and 177 interviews (conducted in person or via Skype). The authors set out to study the linguistic behaviour and identity background of Lithuanian emigrants, and pursue a number of particular objectives: to define the scope of Lithuanian language use in various countries of the world, to acquire the data about its functioning in different spheres, to identify factors which decide about its preservation, to describe the relations between language, identity and a sense of cultural belonging. All these issues are discussed in different chapters of the book. In their studies, Lithuanian researchers applied very modern approaches, inspired by various theoretical concepts of Western sociolinguistics. Najnowsze badania nad językiem i tożsamością emigrantów litewskichRecenzjaEmigrantai: kalba ir tapatybė (Emigranci: język i tożsamość), monografia zbiorowa, redaktor naukowy Meilutė Ramonienė, Vilnius: Vilniaus universiteto leidykla, 2015.W recenzji przedstawiono monografię zbiorową Emigranci: język i tożsamość, opracowaną przez zespół lituanistów pod kierunkiem profesor Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, Meilutė Ramonienė.

The purpose of the research is to establish correspondence between the geographical and mental boundaries of the Ukrainian ethno-political identity. A theoretical and comparative analysis and generalization of historical, geographical, political and sociological theses and data have been applied. The research determines the external boundaries (between Ukraine and the surrounding countries) and internal ones (between the regions of Ukraine). It demonstrates the exceptional importance of the Ukrainian identity opposition to the Russian mental influences. Ukraine is divided into three main regions. Central Ukraine is a mental basis for the Ukrainian identity and political nation. Western Ukraine is notable for the highest level of national consciousness and Ukrainian patriotism. South-Eastern Ukraine is characterized by stronger competition of the Ukrainian and Russian values, but simultaneously by dominating Ukrainian identity.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, religious revival has played an important role in the changes taking place in the lives of peoples who inhabit Siberia. Religion has been regarded as one of the most important factors shaping national consciousness and, at the same time, one of the primary means through which national identity can be expressed. Nonetheless, religious diversity can affect this process of forging national bonds. Buryats are a culturally diverse people, divided along religious lines, thus engendering problems when a religious system is implemented for the purposes of modern nation building. Some Buryats advocate for the universal adoption of Buddhism, while others advocate shamanistic beliefs. Tensions arise from the fact that shamanism is prevalent throughout the lands occupied by ethnic Buryats while Buddhism is in fact territorially limited; the latter, however, is still institutionally and territorially more significant.
