Opis:: Conserving biodiversity is a major necessity, as human interference causes loss of this. Tourism is not exempt from this. Still, ecotourism, a sub-component of the field of sustainable tourism, has more positive effects. The primary objective of this work is to ascertain the condition of ecotourism in the study area. The secondary objectives are to identify the challenges and progress of biodiversity by way of ecotourist activity, and to suggest solutions to promote best outcome and to overcome the challenges of ecotourism. China Bay (Marble Beach), Kanniya Hot Wells, Nilaveli Beach, Pullmottai Beach (Arisimalai), Lanka Patina and Trincomalee Beach are renown places for tourism in Trincomalee District. The condition of the ecotourism industry in Trincomalee District was identified by means of questionnaire survey and direct observation. Our work shows that the coastal areas are particularly rich in biodiversity and in offering scenic values. Many environmental challenges were identified and remedial measures, suggested.

Opis:: Shortly after Poland regained its independence in 1918, a law was proposed that would comprehensively protect the environment. The idea was, however, considered somewhat premature, as there was no existing expertise on how it would affect different aspects of social and economic life. The leaders of the environmental movement in the country believed that such a law should not be determined at a negotiating table but arise from everyday practice. How it actually worked out can be seen in the dispute between the State Council for Nature Protection (established in 1925) and the Bureau of Amelioration of Polesia (established in 1928) over the amelioration of Polesian marshes. This was sparked off in early 1929 when the Council began warning of possible negative effects of extensive drainage and demanded that environmental concerns be taken into account by the amelioration engineers. Józef Próchnik, the director of the Bureau, considered this an illegitimate critique of his activities and angrily attacked the Council’s president, Władysław Szafer. Próchnik accused him of misleading the public and creating an unnecessary alarm. This conflict showed the limits of the Council’s own independence and the real position of the environmentalists in the kaleidoscope of power in interwar Poland.

Opis:: This article presents two ideas related to nature conservation formulated by Galician (Polish) naturalists, namely M. Raciborski’s programme for the protection of nature, the first in the Polish lands, dating from the beginning of the 20th century, and J.G. Pawlikowski’s original ecological manifesto, developed slightly later, based on axiological foundations. These concepts, at the time of their creation, were extremely innovative, not only in the context of Polish thought. They have not lost their significance to this day. They constitute a solid foundation for contemporary reflection on the significance of the natural environment for human existence.
Artykuł przedstawia dwie idee związane z ochroną przyrody sformułowane przez galicyjskich (polskich) przyrodników. Są to: pochodzący z początku XX stulecia pierwszy na ziemiach polskich program ochrony natury M. Raciborskiego oraz, powstały nieco później, oparty na aksjologicznych podstawach, oryginalny manifest ekologiczny J.G. Pawlikowskiego. Koncepcje te, w chwili powstania, miały charakter zdecydowanie nowatorski, i to nie tylko w skali myśli polskiej. Do dnia dzisiejszego nie straciły one na znaczeniu. Stanowią trwały fundament współczesnej refleksji nad znaczeniem środowiska naturalnego dla ludzkiej egzystencji.
