Opis:
The paper discusses the feasibility of installing renewable energy generation technologies on sea-going transport, taking into account the additional weight and power consumption. This study in based on the power management of a 26,198 tonne commercial chemical tanker. The management system would aim at reducing the number of generators as well as the power required from burning fossil fuels. After a process of elimination of potential technologies based on feasibility of the project and shipboard application, the work is focused towards photovoltaic and wind energy generation in combination with fossil fueled engines and Li-ion battery storage covering the higher energy density needs, and the intermittent nature of renewables. The network architecture is optimized in order to have the highest efficiency, and reduced system weight. The results show that successful management of the system can lead to reduction in generator requirement, and energy despite the weight of extra installations of photovoltaic and wind energy generation systems. By reducing the number of generators and allowing each remaining one to operate near their maximum power, the specific fuel consumption is improved, the efficiency is increased, resulting in significant fuel and cost saving, along with the mass of fuel to be carried on-board.

Opis:
A bottleneck for the development of public transport vehicles is their electricity supply. Electric buses are almost exclusively equipped with electrochemical batteries, while nearly 40% of the energy is used in the processes of air conditioning. For this reason, we developed and built a demonstration system for storing thermal energy in public transport vehicles. The most important effects are: significant reduction of financial expenses and of the total weight of all batteries with the same amount of stored energy.

Opis:
The present work describes a control methodology for a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) to improve its transient performance under dynamic load conditions. The proposed coordination control enhanced life cycle performance by segregating the power between battery energy storage systems (BESS) and a supercapacitor (SC). The BESS and SC are connected parallel to each other, and two individual DC–DC bidirectional converters connect them to a common DC bus. The coordination control is established between the controllers of BESS and the SC of HESS, which helps to utilise the usable energy capacity of the HESS. The charging/discharging current of the BESS is controlled within the allowable safety range based on the slope and magnitude of the BESS current. The high-frequency power component is handled by the SC, which helps to reduce the extra exhaustion on the BESS during operation with a higher current. The proposed coordination control of HESS is validated through simulation and the results show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

Opis:
A hybrid energy system (HES) including hydrogen fuel cell systems (FCS) and a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage system (ESS) is established for hydrogen fuel cell ships to follow fast load transients. An energy management strategy (EMS) with hierarchical control is presented to achieve proper distribution of load power and enhance system stability. In the high-control loop, a power distribution mechanism based on a particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) with an equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is proposed. In the low-level control loop, an adaptive fuzzy PID controller is developed, which can quickly restore the system to a stable state by adjusting the PID parameters in real time. Compared with the rule-based EMS, hydrogen consumption is reduced by 5.319%, and the stability of the power system is significantly improved. In addition, the ESS degradation model is developed to assess its state of health (SOH). The ESS capacity loss is reduced by 2% and the daily operating cost of the ship is reduced by 1.7% compared with the PSO-ECMS without considering the ESS degradation.

Opis:
The paper presents a theoretical analysis of thermal energy storage filled with phase change material (PCM) that is aimed at optimization of an adsorption chiller performance in an air-conditioning system. The equations describing a lumped parameter model were used to analyze internal heat transfer in the cooling installation. Those equations result from the energy balances of the chiller, PCM thermal storage unit and heat load. The influence of the control of the heat transfer fluid flow rate and heat capacity of the system components on the whole system operation was investigated. The model was used to validate the selection of Rubitherm RT62HC as a PCM for thermal storage. It also allowed us to assess the temperature levels that are likely to appear during the operation of the system before it will be constructed.

Opis:
In the era of rising prices and growing demand for electricity, intelligent management of it has become a key issue for enterprises. The energy transformation taking place in Poland cannot be carried out without the participation of energy storages. Energy management brings financial benefits, but also reduces the carbon footprint of companies. The Automatic System Engineering Technology Group will follow this path. The Technology Group implements renewable energy sources and storages into its energy profile. The expected effects of the operation of the warehouse are the reduction of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, optimization of electricity purchase costs and creation of a development base for renewable energy sources. The warehouse on the ASE Technology Group campus is connected to a photovoltaic installation. In addition, a wind turbine is planned to be added in the future. The energy storage confirms predicted effects. What is more, in the future it may become an element of the critical infrastructure of Polish enterprises.

Opis:
Local systems, composed of Renewable Energy Sources, generators, loads and storage devices, perform energy transfers between system components. The number of possible configurations of energy transfers grows rapidly with the number of system components, making reliable energy management a difficult task. This paper presents an approach to describe the system operation, according its energy transfers, in form of the automatically generated directed graph. The approach is focused on finding the complete set of all possible system states, that are not prohibited by the operation strategy nor inconsistent. The method is very general and can be applicable to arbitrary system configuration, that can be described at the level of components with only basic attributes and sequences of interactions. Namely, the system components are categorized according to their roles (source/sink/both), fitting in the system (rigid/adaptive) and their persistence (permanent/temporary). The key point of this method is that the final energy transfers diagram is extracted from the initial full graph by filtering out the nodes and transitions not allowed by the defined system operation principle, but leaving all the remaining states. In this way, no consistent system state is overlooked. The generated diagram may be used for studying and visualizing system operation policy, registering the energy flows, discovering doubtful states and transitions or finally for implementation of a reliable energy management controller.

The article presents a case study on the effectiveness of photovoltaic farm and battery energy storage in one of the Polish foundries. In the study, we consider two investment options: stand-alone PV farm of 1MWp and the farm together with battery energy storage with a maximum capacity of 4MWh. The Payback Period and Net Present Value were used as measures of investment profitability. The paper provides a detailed presentation of the assumptions made, as well as the PV electricity production model of the farm and the optimization model that determines the operation cycle of the energy storage. The case study presented in the article shows that the PV farm is economically sensible and profitable, but the battery energy storage is too costly to give a positive economic effect. Energy storage is an important element that provides flexibility in the energy supply system, so it is necessary to find a technical solution that gives this flexibility. Such a solution could be a virtual power plant, which could include a foundry energy system with a RES installation inside.
