Opis:
The article describes the relational-interdependent self-construal scale, as well as its psychometric characteristics and psychological correlates. It is the measure, which has been adapted to Polish conditions. The relational-interdependent self-construal scale measures individual differences in the tendency to include close others in the self. The measure was first introduced by Cross, Bacon & Morris (2000). The items were created on the basis of the definition of relationalinterdependent self-construal and earlier studies. 1579 people participated in the studies aimed at conducting exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis. Results indicate that the relational-interdependent self-construal scale consists of 9 items that form one factor. The measure is reliable and valid. There are gender differences in relational self-construal – women obtain higher scores. The relational- interdependent self-construal scale is positively associated with empathy (especially empathic concern and perspective taking), agreeableness (and to some extent with extraversion), communal values (those important for interpersonal relations, mostly with security, universalism, conformity and benevolence), and with satisfaction with romantic relationship. Relational-interdependent self-construal is not significantly associated with global self-esteem.

Opis:
Empathy and psychopathy seem to be two distant extremes, which only differ, with nothing similar. Therefore, the question that seems to be surprising is whether such a theoretical perspective is justified. Empathy exerts significant influence on social relationships and is associated with moral development, whereas psychopathy seems to be an opposite phenomenon, as it is associated with the lack of deep interpersonal bonds and the violation of legal norms. As studies from various disciplines and scientific areas indicate, such concepts as behavioral effectiveness, morality or altruism might help explain the complex nature of the interrelationship between psychopathy and empathy. The authors tried to explore and describe the complexity of the two presented concepts in the light of the conducted research, and the resulting theoretical and empirical implications.

Opis:
Temperamental traits and empathy are both associated with emotional regulation; they thus shape both the quality of an individual’s life and the functioning of his or her social relationships. However, the mediating effects of emotional empathy in the relationship between temperamental characteristics and relationship satisfaction have not been closely analyzed and therefore require further study. This study examined the effects of temperamental arousability – global negative arousability and its components (fear, sadness, discomfort, frustration) – on emotional empathy and, consequently, on relationship satisfaction. One hundred and fifty young adults (104 women, 46 men) aged 20 to 35 participated in the study. The participants had been in romantic relationships for at least six months. The study used a sociodemographic survey and a set of questionnaires which included the Adult Temperament Questionnaire – Short Form, the Empathic Sensitiveness Scale and the RELAT Questionnaire. The results showed that empathic concern fully mediated the relationship between global negative arousability and relationship satisfaction. Furthermore, the effects of fear and sadness on relationship satisfaction were fully mediated by empathic concern and personal distress. Additionally, personal distress fully mediated the relationship between discomfort and relationship satisfaction. Neither empathic concern nor personal distress were mediators in the relationship between frustration and relationship satisfaction. It can therefore be concluded that although partners who exhibit higher global negative arousability report lower relationship satisfaction, they might become more satisfied when being more compassionate and caring towards others.

Opis:
W prezentowanym artykule opisano związek między trójwymiarowym modelem empatii a postawami wobec przemocy. W badaniach wzięło udział 575 osób (356 kobiet i 199 mężczyzn). Uczestnicy badania wypełniali trzy kwestionariusze: Kwestionariusz postaw wobec przemocy, Kwestionariusz postaw wobec przemocy w bliskich związkach oraz Skalę Wrażliwości Empatycznej (SWE) mierzącą: przyjmowanie perspektywy, empatyczną troskę i osobistą przykrość.
The attitudes towards violence were examined in the context of three-demensional model of empathy. In the presented study participated 575 persons (356 women and 199 men). The participants filled out three questionnaires: Attitudes Toward Violence Questionnaire, Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence Questionnaire, and Emphatic Sensitiveness Scale (SWE) to measure three dimensions of empathy: perspective taking, emphatic concern, and personal distress. The results of the study implicate that empathy is associated with attitudes towards violence in general, as well as in the intimate relationship. Perspective taking and empathic concern were negatively associated with the general results in the attitudes towards violence questionnaires, while personal distress was associated positively. Moreover, the results indicate sex differences – in the group of men perspective taking and empathy are higher correlated. Our findings prove that a multidimensional approach to empathy has a potential to broader our understanding of attitudes towards violence.

Opis:
In the psychological literature there are theories of mother-infant bonding defined as a process that begins in prenatal life. The authors explored the perceived family cohesion amongst people who has just become parents from the perspective of bonding theories. The studies were conducted during 2-3 days after the childbirth. Mothers (the first and the second study) and fathers (the second study) described the current perceived structure of their family system (the position of a newborn child, parents, others in the family), Associations between the perceived family cohesion and personality traits of participants, as well as factors connected with childbirth were examined. The research project was comprised of two studies. Fifty two women took part in the first study, and a group of young parents participated in the second study (29 women and 25 men, including 24 pairs), All women were hospitalized at the Neonatal Clinic – Department of Gynecology and Obsterics at the Medical University of Gdansk, and were 2/3 days after giving birth to a child. Results of the research indicate that mother-infant bonding is a process associated with creating the stability of a family system. Factors that facilitate this process include orientation towards others among mothers, and differentation of self of fathers, as well as their participation in childbirth.
