The paper presents the preliminary investigations of nitric oxides (NOx) estimation from marine two-stroke engines. The Annex VI to Marpol Convention enforce to ship-owners necessity of periodical direct measurements of the NOx emission from the ship engines. It is very expensive procedure but with a low accuracy. Presented investigations show the possibility of estimation the NOx emission without direct measurements but using the artificial neural network (ANN). The paper presents method of choice the input data influenced on NOx emission and configuration of ANN and effects of calculations. The input data poses 15 parameters of engine working, influencing on NOx emission. The output data, necessary to learning the network, were NOx concentration in engine exhaust gases. We take into account two types of ANN; the 3-layer perceptron (MLP) with number of neurons in the hidden layer from 10 to 20 and the radial basis function neural network (RBF) with number of neurons in the hidden layer from 10 to 80. The input, validation and verification data was obtained from laboratory tests. After procedure of network configuration, the chosen ANN was learned by back propagation method. During this operation the weights of neurons were changed to minimize the root mean square error. We obtained ANN's, which allow us to estimate the NOx emission from laboratory engine with accuracy, comparable with Annex VI regulations.

The paper presents an analysis of the influence of the fuel spray geometry on the combustion and emission characteristic of the marine 4-stroke Diesel engine. Presented analysis was prepared based on computational fluid dynamic model (CFD). Initial and boundary conditions of the model as well as data used to model validation were collected during the laboratory study. Calculations were conducted for two different fuel injectors with changed nozzle holes diameters, the number of nozzle holes and the angle between holes axis. The increase of the fuel nozzle holes diameter causes the decrease of the fuel spray tip penetration, but simultaneously the decrease of holes number causes that auto-ignition delay is not changed. The increase of the angle between holes axis from 150° to 158° causes fuel ingintion near cylinder head wall. Result of this is the increase of CO fraction. The deterioration of fuel combustion causes the decrease of NOx mass fraction in the cylinder also.

Presented paper shows the results of the laboratory tests on the relationship between the extreme throttling of both air intake duct and exhaust gas duct and gaseous emission from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory, 4-stroke, DI diesel engine, operated at loads from 50 kW to 250 kW at a constant speed equal to 750 rpm. During the laboratory tests the thermodynamic and exhaust gas emission characteristics of the engine were measured with technical condition recognized as "working properly" and with simulated throttling of both air intake duct and exhaust gas duct. Air intake duct throttling by 60% causes visible changes at both gas temperature and pressure behind the intercooler. The study results show significant changes of NOx and CO2 emission for considered air intake duct throttling. The best indicator of exhaust gas duct throttling among considered thermodynamic parameters of the engine is mean in-cylinder pressure. In the case of measuring the composition of exhaust gas, the throttling of the exhaust gas duct causes visible changes in CO2 and NOx emission. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of the exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of air intake and exhaust gas duct of the marine engine.

The paper presents chosen structures of ANN's usable to NOx emission estimation, the laboratory investigations and effects of estimation NOx emission. The paper reports the effects of investigations during different points of load the engine, with constant and changeable air/fuel equivalence ratio. The detailed results of measurement and calculation of NOx concentration in the exhaust gases of marine two-stroke diesel engine were presented. The results show that the multilayer perception neural network (MLP) is sufficient to NOx emission estimation during onboard exploitation. The MLP network with 15 neurons in the hidden layer has best accuracy for data sets collected during running the engine with speed equal 200 rpm and constant air/fuel equivalence ratio and for both considered speeds of the engine with changeable air/fuel equivalence ratio.

Presented paper shows the results of the laboratory tests on the relationship between throttling of both air intake duct and exhaust gas duct and a gaseous emission from the marine engine. The object of research is a laboratory, four-stroke, DI diesel engine, operated at loads from 50 kW to 250 kW at a constant speed equal to 750 rpm. During the laboratory tests over 50 parameters of the engine were measured with its technical condition recognized as a „working properly” and with simulated leakage of both air intake valve and exhaust gas valve on the second cylinder. The results of this laboratory research confirm that the leakage of cylinder valves causes no significant changes of the thermodynamic parameters of the engine. Simulated leakages through the inlet and exhaust valve caused a significant increase in fuel consumption of the engine. Valve leakages cause an increase of the exhaust gas temperature behind the cylinder with leakage and behind other cylinders. The exhaust gas temperature increase is relatively small and clearly visible only at low loads of the engine. The increase of the temperature and pressure of the charging air behind the intercooler were observed too. Charging air temperature is significantly higher during the engine operation with inlet valve leakage. The study results show significant increases of the CO, NOx and CO2 emission for all the mentioned malfunctions. The conclusion is that the results of measurements of the composition of the exhaust gas may contain valuable diagnostic information about the technical condition of the air intake duct and the exhaust gas duct of the marine engine.

The paper presents experimental research on a 4-stroke, 3-cylinder, turbocharged AL25/30 Diesel engine. Research consisted in investigating the effect of the geometry of the fuel injectors on the exhaust gas composition from the engine. During measurements, the engine was operated with a regulator characteristic of a load range from 40 kW to 280 kW, made by electric water resistance. The engine was mechanically coupled to the electric power generator. Three observations were made for each engine load, operating with fuel injectors of varying geometry. All considered types of injectors were installed on all engine cylinders. Mentioned injectors differed in the size of the nozzle holes diameters, holes numbers and angles measured between the holes axis. Engine performance data were recorded with a sampling time of 1 s. Cylinder pressure and fuel injection pressure on the front of each injector were collected also. The composition of the exhaust gas was measured using an electrochemical analyzer. According to the results, the change of fuel nozzle geometry results in a change in fuel spraying and evaporation and consequently changes in the course of the combustion process. The effect of this is the change of the composition of the exhaust gas.

The paper presents the case study of use the artificial neural network to predict the main propulsion marine engine load. Mentioned load of the engine is important parameter to assess the emission level of toxic compounds into the atmosphere according to ISO standard and MARPOL convention. The engine load depends on the ship speed, rotational speed of the engine, propeller blades settings, the direction and the speed of wind, the condition of sea and the direction and the speed of sea currents and construction parameters of the ship. The realization of the aim of the work requires the direct measurement of presented parameters and measurement of exhaust gas composition. The experiment was carried out onboard STS “Pogoria”. Obtained results are enough to use the ANN to predict engine load to measure the emission level of toxic compounds.

The article presents the results of the laboratory study on nitric oxides (NOx) emission level from marine fourstroke diesel engine. The object of the study was laboratory piston engine, operating at constant speed. Measured engine parameters were necessary to determine the NOx emission in accordance of the requirements of the Annex VI to MARPOL 73/78 Convention. The study consisted of tests during the engine operation without malfunctions and engine operation with simulated malfunctions. Malfunctions of the charge gas exchange in the form of throttling of the air intake duct and the throttling of the exhaust gas duct were taken into account in the simulations. Measurements during the engine operation with simulated malfunctions of the fuel pump on one of the cylinders were also carried out. Mentioned malfunctions were delay of the fuel injection by 5° of the crankshaft angle position and the leakage of the fuel pump of the second engine cylinder. The simulated malfunctions decrease the total weighted NOx emission in all considered the engine loads. All simulated malfunctions resulted in an increase of the NOx emissions during engine operation at low the engine loads and a decrease of the mentioned emission at maximum the engine loads operation. The calculations of the weighted specific fuel consumption present a little change in engine efficiency which are within the range of measuring error of the used method.
