Identyfikacja bezpośrednich źródeł inspiracji dla działających w XVII wieku artystów pozwoliła lepiej odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jak Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki propagował własne, bezsprzeczne osiągnięcia polityczne czy militarne.
    The author of this article discusses a series of works of art which include medals, portrait engravings, paintings and emblems. In addition to a detailed analysis of Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki’s medallic legacy, the aim of this study was to find and describe those works of art that a medallist might have had contact with when undertaking commission from the king or his immediate circle. Identification of direct sources of inspiration for artists working in the 17th century, offers an answer the question of how Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki promoted his own undisputed political or military achievements.

    Znak potakiwania (kiwania głową) należy do najpopularniejszych gestów w wystąpieniach publicznych. Na podstawie kilku godzin nagrań audiowizualnych z udziałem użytkowników języka polskiego wygłaszających mowy uzyskano paręset plików zawierających poszczególne typy potakiwania (według kilkunastu wzorców semantycznych). W procesie zintegrowanej analizy multimodalnej, w której znaczenie komunikatu jest sumą działania wszelkich – mniej lub bardziej świadomie zastosowanych – środków semiotycznego wyrazu (słów, mimiki, spojrzenia, gestykulacji czy intonacji), udało się wyodrębnić następujące funkcje potakiwania w większości przypadków wyraźnie skierowanego do odbiorcy: potwierdzenie, podkreślenie, powitanie, podziękowanie i autoreakcja. Najczęściej jednak gest ten towarzyszył wtrąceniom i wyliczeniom, przybierał zatem funkcje o charakterze spajającym (metajęzykowym).
    Head nodding is one of the most popular gestures used in public speeches by Polish language speakers. Its semantics have been examined on the basis of several hours of audio-visual recordings showing a number of public speakers. The recordings have been grouped into several hundred files containing various types of nodding (following more than a dozen semantic patterns). In an integrated multimodal analysis, in which the meaning of the message is the aggregate of the actions of all – more or less consciously applied – means of semiotic expression (words, facial expressions, gaze, gestures and intonations), the following functions of nodding, in most cases clearly addressed to the recipient, have been distinguished: confirmation, emphasis, greeting, thanks, and self-reaction. Most often, however, this gesture has accompanied inclusions and enumerations, hence assuming the function of a binding or meta-linguistic nature.

    This paper discusses the function and the origin of over four hundred symbols included in the rhetoric handbook by the Piarist Samuel Wysocki, entitled Orator Polonus (published in Warsaw in 1740). The book is considered an exemplary resource book for parliamentary and local diet speeches and orations of panegyric character. In keeping with the rhetorical practice, the symbola were given the form of arguments, developed on the principle of similitude (similitudo). The author of the handbook was inspired by the compendium by Filippo Picinelli Mundus symbolicus (1681). He used the latter author’s exemplary emblems and symbols and incorporated them to his erudite and moral argumentation. The symbols used by Wysocki promoted an ideal of an exemplary Nobleman and landowner, as well as that of a state officer and a legalist. In this way, Wysocki created a pattern that was distinct from the then-popular emblems. The prevalent pattern related formally to the coats-of-arms, as testified by numerous writings and documentation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth under the Saxon dynasty. Wysocki’s works are a perfect example of the adaptation of emblems as a genre, with its typical delimitation as regards the choice of theme, symbolic composition and the function of the lemma, deeply rooted in the rhetorical rules and resulting from the political and panegyric interest of the Nobility.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie cudzoziemskiej recepcji cech i zjawisk polskiej lingwa- i socjokultury na podstawie analizy trzech książek-przewodników (S. Möllera 2006, L. Klos Sokol 2010, F. Vaucher 2016) oraz ocena przydatności tego typu źródeł w poszukiwaniu elementów typowych/charakterystycznych dla naszego portretu kulturowego. Analiza przedmiotowych materiałów była jednym z etapów badań (w ramach projektu Emblematy kultury polskiej – koncepcja leksykonu) nad różnymi perspektywami w postrzeganiu specyfiki szeroko rozumianej polskości, których poznanie jest niezbędne w pracach nad wydobywaniem i negocjowaniem zjawisk mogących uzyskać status emblematów polskiej kultury. Prezentowane rozważania dowodzą, że kluczową korzyścią płynącą z obserwacji i analizy doświadczeń obcokrajowców jest ich „innowymiarowy” ogląd zjawisk, który wynika z zazwyczaj dobrze rozwiniętych sprawności interkulturowych. Cudzoziemcy mogą być cennymi mediatorami kulturowymi, zwłaszcza gdy w procesie oswajania się z innością odnoszą się do niej z humorystycznym dystansem, który sprzyja budowaniu pomostów między odmiennymi perspektywami i kształtowaniu postawy tolerancji.
    The aim of the article is to present the foreign reception of features and emblematic phenomena of Polish lingua- and socioculture based on the analysis of three guide books: S. Möller’s 2006, L. Klos Sokol’s 2010 and F. Vaucher’s 2016 one, and to assess the usefulness of this type of sources in the search for typical elements of our cultural portrait. The analysis of the publications in question was one of the stages of research (as part of the Emblems of Polish culture – the lexicon concept project) on various perspectives in the perception of the specificity of broadly understood Polishness, the knowledge of which is necessary in the work on extracting and negotiating phenomena that can obtain the status of Polish culture emblems. The presented considerations show, among others, that an important benefit of reception of cultural experiences of foreigners is their “innovative” view of phenomena usually resulting from well-developed intercultural skills. Foreigners can be valuable cultural mediators, especially when in the process of getting accustomed to otherness they are able to explain it with a humorous distance, which helps to build bridges between cultures.

    The article is devoted to the relations between literature and visual arts. The texts created on the initiative of the church hierarchs of the Przemyśl eparchy reflect the striving for the synthesis of arts and the visuality of the literary text, characteristic of the baroque era, both in Polish and Ukrainian culture. It took various forms depending on the subject of the work and its genre character. A pomjanyk of Bishop Innocent Winnicki combined a graphic element devoted to soteriological and vanitative themes with the memory of the dead. The series of portraits of the deceased bishops of the Przemyśl eparchy created in the mid-18th century have short epitaphs or, in the case of bishop Onufry Szumlański, a panegyric epigram with references to the symbolism of the coat of arms. An interesting example is Nomen Maximilianus written in honor of bishop Maksymilian Ryło by Ignacy Pilawski. The work consisted of an allegorical emblematic poem of a heraldic character and 12 anagrams built around the bishop’s name, in which the author used many allegorical images to interest the reader and skillfully praise the protagonist of the work. The analysis of these texts shows how important it was for the authors of the time to influence the reader’s imagination with the visual effect of a literary work.

    Twardowski's allegorical poems imitate the structure of emblems; sometimes they seem to be completely like a verbal response to an image. The poet does not use abstraction, he does not compose the world of his works of the speculative matter of notions and names – he will always translate them into a visible, concrete thing. His language is exactly the language of translation; often it is relatively simple: he names what the eye can see, he makes the allegorical picture move by the dynamics of verbal presentation: the description of the action, accumulation of the presented details. Twardowski's poems, if their connections are shown (as can be seen e.g. in the contemporary edition of Łódź młodzi?) with emblems, extraordinary popular and dynamically spreading at the beginning of the 17th century, reveal important networks of relations that connect them to exactly this domain of art., they reveal their own representational dimension. Verbal references to the sight that are really numerous in the works of the author of Pochodnia project a certain type of recipient: they stress visibility, they underline the fact that the text with which we are dealing imitates the image. Twardowski does re-coding of three kinds. The first level of such a translation from image to language is a plain description of the picture; an iconographic description. The second level is adding a plot to the icon; rendering the virtual character of the presentation in writing, which is the amplification strategy. And finally, the third level would be separating the poetic image from the visual imagination and moving the very visibility into the language. The verbal construction of the metaphor – that is the third level. A highly relational character of this poetry, and particularly the mutual penetration of the work and allegorical images taking place in the space of Twardowski's texts (especially when the poems are not collections of emblems) are the cause why in the research procedure the intertextual approach seems to be the best one.

Autorka koncentruje się na wymiarze glottodydaktycznym konkretnych propozycji hasłowych, omawia również kwestię zastosowania przykładowych ćwiczeń, które w perspektywie pragmatycznej stanowić mają rozwinięcie i uzupełnienie haseł. Stawia też pytania o najlepszy sposób ekscerpcji materiału leksykograficznego.
    The article is a part of a “two-voice story” – with Magdalena Smoleń-Wawrzusiszyn – about the Lexicon of emblems of Polish culture.The concept of the lexicon was developed at a scientific workshop held in September 2019 at the University of Freiburg in Switzerland in cooperation with The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and the University of Lodz as part of the grant awarded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The article presents a draft of the above mentioned lexicon and the results of the workshop. The author focuses on the glottodidactic dimension of the specific proposals for entries, and discusses the usage of sample exercises, which in a pragmatic perspective will develop and complement the entries.She also poses questions as to the best way of finding the necessary lexicographic material.

    Artykuł dotyczy renesansowych początków polskich stemmatów, kompozycji złożonych z herbów i opartych na nich wierszy. Głównym celem tekstu jest wskazanie najstarszego polskiego stemmatu i weryfikacja dotychczasowych ustaleń w tym zakresie. Odpowiedzi na to pytanie szukano w polskich i zagranicznych opracowaniach oraz najstarszych krakowskich i obcych drukach. Artykuł prezentuje i omawia wyniki tych poszukiwań – różne kryteria prowadzenia badań doprowadzają do odmiennych rezultatów. W gronie kandydatów na twórcę najstarszego polskiego stemmatu znaleźli się wybitni polscy humaniści z początków XVI w.: Jan Dantyszek, Andrzej Krzycki oraz Paweł z Krosna.
    The article deals with the Renaissance beginnings of Polish stemmata, i.e. compositions consisting of coats of arms and poems that are based on them. The main purpose of the text is to indicate the oldest Polish stemma and to verify previous research results in this area. Answers to this question were sought in Polish and foreign studies as well as in the oldest Cracow and foreign early prints. The article presents and discusses the results of this search – different test criteria lead to different effects. The group of candidates for the author of the oldest Polish stemma includes outstanding Polish humanists from the beginning of the sixteenth century: Jan Dantyszek, Andrzej Krzycki, and Paweł of Krosno.

    The article points to a relationship between Mikołaj Mieleszko’s "Pious Sighs" ("Nabożne westchnienia"; 1657) and the ascetic-mystical literature of the 17th century. This work particularly shows the meditative character of Mieleszko’s emblems. It also presents the division of the work into three books introduced by Mieleszko, which can be viewed in the context of the model of the three-stage mystical way to God (via purgativa, via illuminativa, via unitiva), employed by St. Ignatius of Loyola but known already by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite and fully expressed by St. Bonaventure. The article also discusses the participation of human faculties in the emblems: memory, intellect, will, imagination, and feelings, which are so important in the act of meditation. Referring to the method of applying senses (applicatio sensuum), originating from the Church tradition (Origen, St. Bonaventure) and taken over by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the work emphasizes Mieleszko’s need to apply it in his emblems. Moreover, the article focuses on the influence of Kasper Drużbicki’s and St. Teresa of Ávila’s works visible in Mieleszko’s poems. The themes, allegories, symbols and metaphors of the ascetic-mystical literature reverberate in the emblems of the Baroque poet.
