Opis:
This paper contains a number of results in the theory of star partitions of graphs. We illustrate a variety of situations which can arise when the Reconstruction Theorem for graphs is used, considering in particular galaxy graphs - these are graphs in which every star set is independent. We discuss a recursive ordering of graphs based on the Reconstruction Theorem, and point out the significance of galaxy graphs in this connection.

Hydrological models are very useful for predictions in many ungauged basins across the world. There are many hydrological models available for discharge data gen-eration with different complexities and varied input parameter requirements. Studies have shown that models with many input parameters do not necessarily perform better than those with few input parameters. Basin morphometric parameters play significant roles in the conversion of rainfall to runoff and obtaining good estimates of these parameters for use in runoff models is sometime challenging as Inaccurate input into models can propagate errors and make the models to perform poorly. This study employs the method of principal component analysis to reduce the number of morphometric parameters required to run a runoff model without losing any major information. Parameters for five selected study basins in central Nigeria were measured and analysed. The result shows that three morphometric parameters (Fitness Ratio, Ruggedness Number and Watershed Eccentricity) can adequately represent other parameters as an input into a runoff model for the basins. This reduces significantly the time and effort needed to compute all the parameters which in actual fact may not improve the quality or efficiency of the runoff model.

This study formulates and solves the problem of transverse damped vibration in the system of changing the boom radius in a truck crane with advanced cylinder design for controlling the boom radius. The dissipation of vibration energy in the model adopted in the study occurs as a result of internal damping of the viscoelastic material (rheological Kelvin-Voigt model) of the beams that model the system and movement resistance in the supports of the cylinder and crane boom to the bodywork frame of the crane. Damped frequencies of vibrations and degree of vibration amplitude decay were calculated. The study also presents eigenvalues of system vibration with respect to changes in damping coefficients and system geometry for a selected load.

Let $ A $ be a bounded linear operator in a complex separable Hilbert space, $ A^∗ $ be its adjoint one and $ A_I := (A − A^∗)//(2i) $. Assuming that $A_I $ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, we investigate perturbations of the imaginary parts of the eigenvalues of $ A $. Our results are formulated in terms of the “extended” eigenvalue sets in the sense introduced by T. Kato. Besides, we refine the classical Weyl inequality $ \Sigma_{k=1}^\infty (Im \lambda_k (A))^2 ≤ N_2^2 (A_I) $, where $ λk(A) (k = 1, 2, . . .) $ are the eigenvalues of $ A $ and $ N_2(·) $ is the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. In addition, we discuss applications of our results to the Jacobi operators.

In this work, we first describe all the maximal hyponormal extensions of a minimal operator generated by a linear differential-operator expression of the first-order in the Hilbert space of vector-functions in a finite interval. Next, we investigate the discreteness of the spectrum and the asymptotical behavior of the modules of the eigenvalues for these maximal hyponormal extensions.

The spectrum of a selfadjoint quadratic operator pencil of the form [formula] is investigated where M ≥ 0, G ≥ 0 are bounded operators and A is selfadjoint bounded below is investigated. It is shown that in the case of rank one operator G the eigenvalues of such a pencil are of two types. The eigenvalues of one of these types are independent of the operator G. A novel procedure is given here for constructing non-negative functions with zero-valued global minima coinciding with eigenvectors of a general real matrix A. Some of these functions are distinct because all their local minima are also global, offering a new way of determining eigenpairs by local optimization. Apart from describing the framework of the method, the error bounds given separately for the approximation of eigenvectors and eigenvalues provide a deeper insight into the fundamentally different nature of their approximations.

Assume the eigenvalues and the weights are given for a difference boundary value problem and that the form of the boundary conditions at the endpoints is known. In particular, it is known whether the endpoints are fixed (i.e. Dirichlet or non-Dirichlet boundary conditions) or whether the endpoints are free to move (i.e. boundary conditions with affine dependence on the eigenparameter). This work illustrates how the potential as well as the exact boundary conditions can be uniquely reconstructed. The procedure is inductive on the number of unit intervals. This paper follows along the lines of S. Currie and A. Love, Inverse problems for difference equations with quadratic eigenparameter dependent boundary conditions, \emph{Quaestiones Mathematicae}, 40 (2017), no. 7, 861−877. Since the inverse problem considered in this paper contains more unknowns than the inverse problem considered in the above reference, an additional spectrum is required more often than was the case in the unique reconstruction of the potential alone.

This paper deals with the existence question in optimal design. We present, a general variational technique for proving existence, and give several examples concerning functionals of eigenvalues and of energy type. In particular, we show how the isoperi-metric problem for the Dirichlet eigenvalues of an elliptic operator of general order fits into this frame.

This article presents several different methods for solving the problem of how to find a certain relation defined in chapter 2. The first method deals with the identities known in the theory of symmetric polynomials as the elements of a certain vector space. The second method is designed around the matrix transformations between symmetric polynomials. The third method is designed around the property of a linear operator and its characteristic polynomial. The fourth method is designed in the area of complex numbers, and introduces the multiplication group of 'complex roots of one'. Significant improvement in the third and fourth method is made by introducing so called 'block method'. It facilitates all calculations by making them much shorter. The article ends with an example showing symmetry and regularity of all procedures. Finally, the article shows how to solve the problem for any degree n of the polynomial, and for any degree k. At the end of the paper solutions for n < 5 and k < 5 are tabulated.
