    The text is devoted to the analysis of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi’s pedagogical concept of reforming criminal legislation, modernizing the prison system and dealing with convicts. Although this is not the main axis of his work and covers only a few texts, the message contained in them, supported by the author’s practical activity, makes him considered one of the main prison reformers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the mental father of the first wave of Swiss penitentiary reforms and the protoplast of the educational view of the purpose of imprisonment. After a introduction, the importance of Pestalozzi’s work and activities for modernizing the prison system is presented, followed by an analysis of his proposals in this regard. However, not only a presentation of his views on the treatment of criminals and the handling of convicts was made, but also the contexts and references of his ideas were extensively outlined, referring to his literary works, his practical outreach and education activities, but also illustrating his immersion in the current of reforms of the time and references to figures with whom he worked and valued. The author hopes that this will put Pestalozzi’s visionary postulates into a broader perspective.

    A radical reform of the education system, one of the pillars of the four major reforms of Jerzy Buzek’s government, followed by a reform of the core curriculum by Minister Katarzyna Hall, and finally a controversial reform by Anna Zalewska under which some middle-level schools in operation since 1999 are being shut down are events covered in numerous publications, among them in leading opinion weeklies in Poland. One of such weeklies is “Polityka,” published continuously since 1957, where dozens of articles on education and reforms have been published over the last 20 years. The article is a concise analysis of the texts published in “Polityka”, the issues raised and the authors’ attitudes to the changes introduced in the subsequent years to the Polish education system.

    In the text, types of reforms to formal education are introduced, and against this background, an answer is sought to the question of who they serve, who is interested in this multi-layered effort, who is or can be a beneficiary and who is a loser in this process. The central part of the text is a presentation of types of the reform. Then, the effects of reforming education are indicated. The conclusion underlines the importance of research in the process of reform, in the action, as a professional practice of integrating cognition and change.

    Late 1989 did not bring about any structural changes in education. For the next decade, a two-tier system of general education was in place, based on an 8-year primary school and a 4-year secondary school. This system was established in Poland in 1961 and remained unchanged until the late 20th century (1999) when Professor Mirosław Handke adopted a fundamental reform of the educational system, including introduction of 6-year primary schools, 3-year lower secondary schools and 3-year specialised high schools. Discussions on the changes, the course of the reform and the needs of Polish schools in the new reality were reflected in opinion weeklies. The article offers a concise analysis of texts on the perception of the structural reform, but also the broadly defined economic condition of Polish schools, the social position of teachers and school problems of children and adolescents, printed in Wprost weekly in 1998–2017. The latter date refers to the first year of Anna Zalewska’s reform, abolishing lower secondary schools and restoring the previous model of education.

    This article provides a short presentation of the activities of the National Education Committee on the plane of Polish educational spheres in the years 1773-1794. Providing an overview of the main directions for reform of the educational institution, the author tries to answer the question whether the decision on the appointment of the Committee was right. The aim of the study was to show the national idea underpinning the National Education Committee. The result of the Committee’s activities was to educate active citizens, who have developed national consciousness and respect for the Polish language. Under the influence of the Committee took place fundamental changes in the structure and profile of the program Polish school. Committee should be regarded as a progressive institution which gave the rank of the Polish language in education, and her ideas are relevant today.

    Sięgając do wspomnień, osobistych listów oraz dostępnych dokumentów, poddano analizie wątki zdrowotne w biografiach dwóch wybitnych Wielkopolan, Stanisława Staszica (1755-1826) i Augusta Cieszkowskiego (1814-1894). Obaj zasłużyli się Rzeczypospolitej owocną działalnością na płaszczyźnie naukowej i społecznej. Ich aktywność przypadła na trudny, burzliwy okres w dziejach Polski, czas upadku państwowości, utraty niepodległości, dramatycznych zrywów powstańczych i wreszcie zaborów oraz ponad wiekowego ucisku. Znakomici mężowie opowiadali się raczej nie za militarną konfrontacją z wrogami, a za pokojową, acz stanowczą rywalizacją na polu gospodarczym i naukowym. Stawiali na pracę u podstaw, na znaną i sprawdzoną w tradycji Wielkopolski pracę organiczną. Czerpali z twórczego dorobku Oświecenia, ale wzbogacali je o własne prorocze wizje. Niezwykle uzdolnieni i wszechstronni, podejmowali również inicjatywy na rzecz zdrowia publicznego. Obie postacie przedstawiono od mniej znanej, bardziej prywatnej strony. Posągowym biografiom nadaje ona ludzkie, bezpośrednie oblicze i je po prostu ożywia. Przybliża tym samym sprawy, którym się poświęcili, przypomina ich dzieło.
    Stanisław Staszic (1755-1826) and August Cieszkowski (1814-1894) were versatile persons, meritorious polish philosophers, founders of high schools, chairmen of famous scientific societas in Warsaw and Poznań. They live in the second half of XVIII century (the first) and in XIX century, became emitent advocates of modernisation and consolidation of Poland. Poland was divided then and annexed by foreign neighbours, our enemies. Both were followers of social integrity, education and industralisation- so called, ground work. They had of course some corporal ailments. This article shows them, and by the way, makes their biographies more interesting and vivid. Both great men influenced also, on preparing many reforms on the country medicine area.

    Kategoria „kultury szkoły” przenika do pedagogiki szkolnej z innych nauk społecznych jako kluczowe dla reform oświatowych zobowiązanie, by tę instytucję niejako odszkolnić, czyli uczynić ją bardziej zhumanizowaną. Artykuł przedstawia nieznane w kraju analizy naukowe na ten temat, które mogą być przydatne w konstruowaniu projektów badawczych. Istotne jest bowiem uniknięcie w diagnozach podejść przenoszonych wprost z nauk o zarządzaniu, które dotyczą zupełnie innej sfery działalności organizacyjnej w społeczeństwach otwartych i podporządkowujących gospodarkę wolnorynkowej konkurencji. Szkoła nie może być poddawana rozwiązaniom, które mają służyć efektywniejszej produkcji, gdyż rolą edukacji jest włączanie dzieci i młodzieży w kulturę, toteż i szkoła musi być nośnikiem jej cech.
    The category of ’school culture’ has permeated school pedagogy from other social sciences. It is a key commitment for educational reforms to unschool this institution, i.e. to make it more humane. The article presents scientific analyses on the subject, unknown in Poland, which may be useful in the design of research projects. It is important that researchers do not introduce in their diagnoses approaches taken directly from the management sciences, which concern a completely different sphere of organisational activity in open societies which subject the economy to free market competition. The school cannot be subjected to solutions aimed at more efficient production, because the role of education is to involve children and young people in culture. Therefore, the school must be a carrier of its features.
