The 'Variety of Capitalism' concept is employed as the point of departure for the discussion on diversity of national economic models within the European Union (EU) with the particular emphasis on the trajectory of Poland's economic development since 1989. Acknowledging the fact that there are mixed economies in the modern world, is the key to opening a new field of debate and research. Th e author argues that the issues discussed in his article should be the subject of multi-angled approach exercised by scholars representing various branches of social science.

    The analysis of the international transmission of the economic shocks and influence, among them the international effects of the national macroeconomic policies, constitutes a very wide and multi-aspectual field of the open economy macroeconomics. Flourishing interest in this field of theory and research, resulting from the post-war dynamic development of the international economic relations (in many facets of this issue) and more broadly − globalization, has led to improving the ”old” schemes and models considered as underlying the core of the open economies’ theory. The evolution of the thougts on international economic linkages and progress made in analysing them were marked by including into the analysis some new assumptions more adequate to the changes observed in the global economy and more perfectly reflecting new tendencies creating modern global ”reality”. All above has led to shaping so called new advanced approach to the open economy macroeconomics. In the empirical aspect, this approach is based on wide implementation of econometric modelling and panel data analysis. As to the theory we can say it is a synthesis – the effect of many years’ scientific research in the field. The aim of the article is to present the new advanced models of the global economy, in particular this part of them which refers to the international transmission of the effects of national macroeconomic (fiscal and monetary) policies and other shocks influencing modern open markets (interest rate shocks, price shocks, terms of trade shocks etc.). To realize so specified goal the following models will be briefly presented: International Monetary Fund’s Multimod, INTERLINK OECD (widely used in the global research in the 80s and the 90s) and the New Global Model OECD (currently implemented). As the background the chosen key steps of the evolution in the theoretical approach as well as empirical research in this stream of the open economy macroeconomics will be overally presented, starting from the Mundell-Fleming model being the crucial turning point of the thoughts on international linkages and macroeconomic policy influence. The author is going to underline the following aspects of the progress which has taken place in the questioned field of research: implementation of new approaches originating from the neo-classical concepts (e.g. the monetary approach to modelling the exchange rates), incorporating the monopolistic competition, monopolistic and oligopolistic economy models into the overall analysis, taking into consideration the short-term effects of the dynamic changes coming from temporary or permanent price, demand or terms of trade shocks, taking the assumption of the incomplete markets and intertemporal choice as an integral part of the analysis.

    The purpose of this article is to conduct a comparative analysis of the competitiveness of the EU and the US economies, in a systemic framework, that is, with respect to the main components of country’s economic system that determine its competitiveness. The analysis is based on the systemic framework of economic competitiveness and growth, developed by T.J. Hämäläinen. The analysis of the available data indicates that the US achieved better results in six of the seven study areas, that is: 1) productive resources; 2) innovation and diffusion; 3) organizational efficiency of the economic system; 4) product market characteristics; 5) institutional framework; 6) government policy and activities. As far as the EU is concerned, it has potentially bigger opportunities to benefit from the greater (than in the US) involvement of foreign investors on its market. However, this is not a factor that can compensate for the UE’s weaknesses in other areas. It will be extremely difficult to improve the international competitiveness of the EU without introducing significant changes, that is in particular, without significant improvement of the organizational efficiency and without – even partial – resignation from (so characteristic for the EU member states) policy of maintaining high government spending (in relation to GDP).

    As economics became a model-based science, ontological nature, cognitive status, and practical uses of economic models came under the spotlight of philosophers of economics and economic methodologists. However, what was strikingly missing was the interest in the cultural dimension of economic modeling. Some calls for thematizing “cultural framework” (Mäki), “enculturation” (Goldschmidt, Remmele), or “culture patterns” (Benton) of economic models have appeared in recent years, and this paper aims at addressing such calls. To this end, we start with the artifactual approach to economic models (Morgan, Knuuttila, Halsmayer), which cuts across the idealization–construction debate, and complement this approach with the cultural-semiotic component, drawing from the symbolic anthropology of Clifford Geertz. We thus come up with an interpretation of economic models as cultural artifacts, which enables us to address the insufficiently explored question of style in economic modeling using Nelson Goodman’s semiotic account of style.

    In this article, analysis was conducted on companies involved in production and trade of information goods. The research offers insight into methods of conducting business in information goods sector, which involves intellectual products such as, video tutorials, templated 3d models etc. related to professional graphics software packages, in this case Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4d. The paper explores how firms make use of special economic strategies, as described by Varian and Shapiro, particularly useful for trade in intellectual property products. An attempt was carried out to establish a connection between the number of strategies used by companies, and the number of potential clients which determine the success of a company. For that purpose a proxy system was contrived. The YouTube search engine was used as a way of finding required companies.

    The paper examines the economic impact of shale gas extraction. It also discusses the methodological approaches and tools used in studies in this area. The article is based on a literature review that focuses on identifying the key mechanisms determining the impact of shale gas on an economy. The reviewed studies vary in terms of methodology, territorial scope, range of effects considered, and time frame. Some authors emphasize output and employment growth as the main result of extraction and investment processes, Boratyński says, while others recommend a more comprehensive cost-benefit analysis, focusing on economic efficiency and decreased energy prices as the most important effect. Research reports also highlight the importance of externalities related to the potentially negative impact on the environment and health, especially at the local level, Boratyński notes. Valuation of external costs, however, is subject to significant practical difficulties and uncertainty, according to the author. The assessment of shale gas impact is usually based on simulations using a multi-sector economic model, an energy system model, or a hybrid of the two, Boratyński says. He adds that attempts at empirical ex-post estimation of such an impact raise questions about the validity of assumptions used in some simulation analyses.
    Celem artykułu jest próba systematyzacji ekonomicznych skutków eksploatacji gazu łupkowego, a także omówienie różnorodnych podejść metodycznych i narzędzi stosowanych w analizach dotyczących tego zagadnienia. Podstawą analizy jest przegląd literatury przedmiotu, dokonywany pod kątem identyfikacji mechanizmów ekonomicznych, które powinny być wzięte pod uwagę w kompleksowej ocenie wpływu wydobycia na gospodarkę. Przegląd wskazuje na dużą różnorodność ujęć tematu, m.in. pod względem metodyki, zasięgu terytorialnego (region, kraj, świat), zakresu rozważanych skutków i horyzontu czasowego. Część autorów skupia się na powiązanym z działalnością inwestycyjną i wydobywczą wzroście produkcji i zatrudnienia. Inni zwracają uwagę na konieczność bardziej wszechstronnej analizy kosztów i korzyści, odwołującej się raczej do kwestii efektywności ekonomicznej niż do wpływu na poprawę koniunktury – z tej perspektywy najważniejszym potencjalnym skutkiem wydobycia gazu łupkowego jest spadek cen energii. Istotne są także – zwłaszcza na poziomie lokalnym – efekty zewnętrzne działalności wydobywczej, związanych z jej potencjalnym negatywnym wpływem na środowisko przyrodnicze i zdrowie. Wycena kosztów zewnętrznych jest jednak w praktyce trudna i obarczona dużą niepewnością. Szacunki wpływu gazu łupkowego na gospodarkę bazują najczęściej na symulacji przy wykorzystaniu wielosektorowego modelu gospodarki, modelu systemu energetycznego lub ich hybrydy. Próby empirycznej oceny ex post skutków eksploatacji podają w wątpliwość założenia niektórych analiz symulacyjnych.

    The main objective of the article is to demonstrate the falseness of the so-called marginal theory of distribution as it is used today. This theory was originally coined by American economist John Bates Clark in the late 19th century. However, the modern version of the theory, used in macroeconomic models including dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) modeling, departs from the original concept. In the first section of this article, the history of the theory of distribution is presented, from the time Clark formulated the theory to the present day. In the following section, a formal proof of the falseness of the contemporary version of the marginal theory of distribution is shown. The proof is illustrated by examples using data from Italy and Poland.
    Artykuł ma na celu wykazanie fałszywości współcześnie wykorzystywanej postaci marginalnej teorii podziału. Teoria ta pierwotnie opracowana została przez Johna Batesa Clarka, pierwszego wybitnego ekonomistę amerykańskiego. Jednak jej współczesna postać - wykorzystywana między innymi w modelach makroekonomicznych, w tym modelach DSGE - odbiega od swojego pierwowzoru. W pierwszej części artykułu skupiono się więc na prześledzeniu historii teorii podziału od czasu jej sformułowania przez Clarka, do czasów współczesnych. Następnie, w części drugiej, przedstawiono dowód na fałszywość współcześnie wykorzystywanej postaci teorii podziału, ilustrując go przykładami z wykorzystaniem danych z Włoch i Polski.

    Economics, like other sciences, is met with critical remarks and polemics from other areas of knowledge related to their findings and achievements. However, what distinguishes the critical trend towards economics and economists, especially in recent years, is special. It is characterized first of all by the exceptional intensity of critics, often taking the form of an attack, depreciating the status of economics as a science, and secondly, more and more frequent critical comments from the economists themselves. These issues are the subject of this article. The author tries to identify the main reasons for these critical remarks, he is considering the reality of the economic crisis and the sources of weakening the social prestige of economists. In conclusion, the actions necessary to reverse these trends that are unfavor-able for economics and economists are outlined.
    Ekonomia, podobnie jak i inne nauki, spotyka się z uwagami krytycznymi oraz polemikami ze strony innych dziedzin wiedzy, odnoszonymi do ich ustaleń i osiągnięć. Jednak to co wyróżnia krytyczny nurt pod adresem ekonomii oraz ekonomistów, zwłaszcza w ostatnich latach, jest szczególne. Charakteryzuje go po pierwsze, wyjątkowa intensywność krytyki, przybierającej często wręcz znamiona ataku deprecjonującego status ekonomii jako nauki oraz po drugie, coraz częstsze uwagi krytyczne pochodzące od samych ekonomistów. Zagadnienia te są przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu. Autor stara się zidentyfikować główne przyczyny tych krytycznych uwag, zastanawia się nad realnością kryzysu ekonomii i źródłami osłabienia prestiżu społecznego ekonomistów. W konkluzji stara się nakreślić działania niezbędne do odwrócenia tych niekorzystnych dla ekonomii i ekonomistów tendencji.

    Zasadą wpisaną w Konstytucję Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej jest gwarancja wolności gospodarczej, będącej jednocześnie podstawą gospodarki rynkowej, na którą ograniczenia mogą być nakładane tylko w drodze ustawy lub ze względu na ważny interes publiczny. W związku z doniosłością niniejszej zasady w polskim porządku prawnym stanowi ona nadal aktualną problematykę naukowo-badawczą. Z tego też powodu autorka próbuje przedstawić najważniejsze kwestie związane z istotą wolności gospodarczej w zestawieniu z trzema głównymi modelami ekonomicznymi występującymi współcześnie oraz ograniczeniami z jakimi zasada wolności gospodarczej musi się zmierzyć.
    A principle enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland is the guarantee of economic freedom, which is also the basis of the market economy, on which restrictions may be imposed only by law or for reasons of important public interest. In view of the importance of this principle in the Polish legal order, it is still a topical scientific and research issue. For this reason, the author attempts to present the most important issues related to the essence of economic freedom in juxtaposition with the three main economic models occurring today and the limitations that the principle of economic freedom has to face.
