The study presents the impact of eco-innovation and policy conducive to the implementation of the principles of sustainable development in agriculture on economic development. The starting point was the analysis of economic growth models and indicating in them the approach to innovation for the implementation of sustainable development. The specifics of eco-innovation in the agricultural sector and their typology have been presented. Due to the complexity of innovative processes and in particular the resulting effects, multi-component measures of innovation and eco-innovation have been discussed. In the last part, using the panel analysis, the effect of eco-innovation in agriculture on socio-economic development at the level of the entire economy has been demonstrated.

W artykule przedstawiono rozważania dotyczące istoty innowacji ekologicznych oraz wpływu wdrażania tych innowacji na konkurencyjność przedsiębiorstw. Przewagę konkurencyjną ujęto z perspektywy czterech odrębnych, zarówno konceptualnie, jak i empirycznie, wymiarów, tj.: przewaga związana z rynkiem, wizerunkiem przedsiębiorstwa, ryzykiem i efektywnością. W dalszej kolejności odniesiono ww. wymiary do czterech kluczowych rodzajów innowacji ekologicznych, tj.: innowacje produktowe i procesowe oraz innowacje radykalne i usprawniające. Zaproponowane wielowymiarowe ujęcie relacji: „innowacje ekologiczne – konkurencyjność przedsiębiorstw” może stanowić punkt wyjścia dla przeprowadzenia badań empirycznych dotyczących źródeł przewagi konkurencyjnej przedsiębiorstw wdrażających rozwiązania ekologiczne.
The paper presents the notion of ecological innovation as well as the impact of implementation of eco-innovation on company’s competitiveness. It encompasses four both conceptually and empirically distinct dimensions of competitive advantage, i.e.: market-related, image-related, risk-related and efficiency-related. All dimensions were related to four key types of eco-innovations, i.e. product and process as well as radical and incremental innovations. The proposed multi-dimensional approach may serve as a basis for future research. It may be particularly suitable for examining the sources of competitive advantage of companies implementing eco-innovations.

Eco-innovations are defined as innovations that enable the reduction of consumption of raw materials and energy, emissions of pollution and waste, leading thereby to improvement of natural environment. The main group of such eco-innovations are environmental technologies, however such a conceptualisation does not only relate to the process or product innovations but also to organization, marketing and business models. The European Union, as well as individual countries, promote and support the development and implementation of eco-innovations, which are considered as practical implementation of sustainable development principles in business practices. This article aims to analyse the factors affecting the development of eco-innovation in Polish companies. The analysis is conducted on the basis of primary literature, statistical data and other data. With that, the article presents the basic principles of the concept of eco-innovation, chosen external conditions and internal influences on eco-innovative companies. Also, an attempt has been undertaken to identify important factors that determine the development of eco-innovation in Poland, which is presented in the form of a SWOT analysis.
Ekoinnowacje definiowane są jako takie innowacje, które umożliwiają redukcję zużycia surowców i energii, emitowanych zanieczyszczeń i wytwarzanych odpadów, a tym samym prowadzą do poprawy stanu środowiska przyrodniczego. Główną grupą ekoinnowacji są tzw. technologie środowiskowe, ale pojęcie to dotyczy nie tylko innowacji procesowych czy produktowych, ale także organizacyjnych, marketingowych i modeli biznesowych. Unia Europejska (EU), jak i poszczególne kraje, propagują i wspierają opracowywanie i implementację ekoinnowacji, które są uznawane za praktyczne wdrożenie założeń koncepcji rozwoju zrównoważonego do praktyki gospodarczej. W oficjalnych dokumentach EU zwraca się uwagę na rolę przedsiębiorstw w tym szczególnie mikro-, małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw w opracowywaniu ekoinnowacji. Celem artykułu jest analiza czynników wpływających na rozwój ekoinnowacji w przedsiębiorstwach, przeprowadzona na podstawie badań literaturowych, danych statystycznych oraz danych z rankingu ekoinnowacyjności. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe założenia koncepcji ekoinnowacji, wybrane uwarunkowania zewnętrzne oraz wewnętrzne wpływające na ekoinnowacyjność przedsiębiorstw. Podjęto także próbę określenia najważniejszych czynników determinujących rozwój ekoinnowacji w Polsce, które przedstawiono w formie analizy SWOT.

Nowadays, the competitiveness of the economy, which is determined to a large extent by the innovative activities of enterprises and institutions, is of great importance for economic development. An important type of innovation is eco-innovations. Eco-innovations are currently a very timely topic undertaken by researchers, but also an important element of the activities of many companies. As a network of service providers for eco-innovations in small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, ECOLABNET fits perfectly in this trend. It aims to support, enable and empower companies to undertake sustainable eco-innovation activities in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond. The aim of this publication is to present the results of research on the eco-innovation needs of SME enterprises of the Baltic Sea countries and potential collaboration in this field with external entities. The services developed as packages of eco-innovation services in Ecolabnet that can meet the identified needs were indicated. The survey was conducted between March and May 2019 and covered SMEs in six countries: Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The subjects of the study were manufacturing companies that improve their products or services. The aim of the research was to gain an understanding of the needs and challenges related to eco-innovation in the context of sustainable development, to identify the future eco-innovation needs of manufacturing SMEs and collaborations with external actors, and to determine how and through which services the Ecolabnet can meet these needs and contribute to the growth of the enterprise. The manufacturing enterprises in this survey were motivated to eco-innovate. However, they lack knowledge on eco-innovation in its broadest sense, and therefore, urgently need the help of external experts, business partners, and networks in this area. The survey covered three areas: Business, Development, and Technology/Production. Business topic areas that entrepreneurs placed a high emphasis on were: branding and communication, supplier relations, customer insights and financial aspects. Within the needs in terms of development put most emphasis on product design, process development, bio-based materials and biodegradable materials. In the last category of identified needs Technology/Production respondents indicated increasing process efficiency, energy optimization and material efficiency. The research results also indicate that product design as well as branding and communication are urgent needs in the field of external expertise. Of the potential needs, the respondents also indicated customer insights, other alternative materials, business models, value chain assessment, and service design.

Energy security was previously considered unimportant. It started functioning only since the 70s of the twentieth century, during the oil crises. Today, the problem of energy security is increasingly being moved to an international level. The only way to do this seems to be the usage of renewable energy sources, which are present in every country whether in the form of solar, hydro, tidal, biomass, geothermal or wind energy. As the depletion of mineral resources, should increase the share of renewable sources, so that for several years it was possible to acquire energy without appreciable problems for customers.

Constantly advancing processes of globalization, changing customer expectations and increasing competition are forcing business entities and national economies to continue the activity of innovation. Innovation is designed to ensure economic development in which economic activity and the level of production are increasing or the unemployment level is decreasing, etc. Unfortunately, along with economic development there is observed environmental degradation, depletion of natural resources and increasingly stronger impact of the global climate changes. For this reason, there is inevitable demand for ecological innovations, also known as eco-innovations. In general, they are intended to weaken or reduce the destructive human impacts by means of supporting economic growth.
Procesy globalizacyjne, zmieniające się oczekiwania klientów, nasilająca się konkurencja wymuszają na podmiotach gospodarczych i krajowych gospodarkach ciągłą aktywność innowacyjną. Obok wzrostu gospodarczego, wprowadzania różnego rodzaju unowocześnień w sferze gospodarczej i społecznej XX wiek charakteryzują również bezrobocie, bieda, klęski humanitarne, nierównomierny rozwój gospodarczy czy znaczna różnica w poziomie rozwoju między krajami wysoko rozwiniętymi i nisko rozwiniętymi. W ostatnim czasie odnotowuje się wzrost znaczenia i oddziaływania działalności innowacyjnej na kondycję podmiotów gospodarczych, jak również całych gospodarek. Innowacyjność skutkuje między innymi możliwością wprowadzenia na rynki nowych produktów i usług, rozbudowy bądź otwarcia nowej firmy, obniżenia kosztów produkcji czy uruchomienia nowej linii produkcyjnej. Większość z innowacyjnych opracowań ma na celu sprostanie oczekiwaniom konsumentów i unowocześnienie otaczającego ich środowiska. Niestety, wraz ze wzrostem gospodarczym degradacji ulega środowisko naturalne, wyczerpują się zasoby naturalne i następuje coraz silnej odczuwalne oddziaływanie zmian globalnego klimatu. Z tego względu nieuniknione jest zapotrzebowanie na innowacje ekologiczne, zwane również ekoinnowacjami, które mają na celu osłabienie bądź redukcję destrukcyjnych oddziaływań ludzkich. W artykule przedstawiono istotę innowacji ekologicznych, podejście Unii Europejskiej do wspomnianych problemów oraz zaprezentowano istotne innowacje ekologiczne, które – można śmiało stwierdzić – w pewnym stopniu przyczyniają się do niwelowania efektów degradowania środowiska naturalnego.

Celem publikacji jest rozpoznanie innowacji przynoszących korzyści dla środowiska w publicznych jednostkach ochrony zdrowia. Należy także zauważyć, że w badanym podmiocie brak jest zarządzania innowacjami. Artykuł zawiera przegląd najnowszej literatury, głównie angielskojęzycznej, z zakresu innowacji oraz innowacji ekologicznych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sektora usług i jednostek ochrony zdrowia, co stanowi jego główny walor teoriopoznawczy.
The aim of the publication is to identify innovations that bring benefits to the environment in public healthcare units. The article's objective was achieved through a literature review and a case study of a selected public healthcare unit. Based on the results of the study of Public Hospital XYZ in Zabrze, it can be inferred that the unit primarily implements systemic ecological innovations. These solutions are sought to reduce the costs of energy, water, and medical materials consumption, as well as to avoid waste, while simultaneously having a positive impact on the environment. It should also be noted that there is a lack of innovation management in the examined entity. The article provides an overview of the latest literature, mainly in English, on innovation and ecological innovation, with particular emphasis on the services sector and healthcare units, which constitutes its main theoretical value.

The paper aim is to increase knowledge concerning formation of eco-clusters regarding their origin and transformation process. Since eco-innovation is emerging as an industry, it should attract attention of decisionmakers of different levels. Author presents the complexity of eco-clusters development and the consequences for its governance. The paper shows what is the role of different stakeholders in this process. The author aim is to recognize the current links between cluster policy directed to sustainability and eco-innovation. Clustering may have significant implication on development of a city or a whole region. From the perspective of regional or city development, eco clusters can play important role in development strategies. Countries, regions and cities search how to improve competitive conditions and attract firms and other stakeholders to their locations prepared for cluster initiatives. Author analyzes policy and support instruments for eco-clusters used in the European Union and in Poland. The paper reviews main theoretical framework, empirical findings and statistical data on clusters in Europe.

Eco-innovations unites competitiveness and sustainable development. Their creation and implementation improves the environmental state and the level of technological advantage. There are various rankings presenting innovativeness of national economies. In the article, results concering eco-innovativeness of the BSR countries were presented, according to the rankings and reports presented by EIO.
Ekoinnowacje są elementem łączącym konkurencyjność oraz rozwój zrównoważony. Ich tworzenie i wprowadzanie pozwala zarówno na poprawę stanu środowiska, jak i poziomu zaawansowania technologicznego. Istnieją różne rankingi przedstawiające innowacyjność gospodarek narodowych. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki dotyczące ekoinnowacji w krajach RMB, zgodnie z rankingami i raportami EIO.

Research background: There is no doubt that innovation is an important source of economic growth. In the assessment of the innovative activity of Polish industrial processing enterprises, two opposing views can be found. The first indicates the exogenous shock resulting from the global financial crisis and the associated innovation crisis and the subsequent period of innovative pessimism. The second shows the Polish economy as the European Green Island due to strong and uninterrupted economic growth over the past 27 years, controlled inflation, and reduction of unemployment as well as increase of the citizens? well-being. In these conditions, an interesting research gap appeared, which is worth filling, at the centre of which there are factors determining the innovative activity of enterprises, and in particular the role and importance of innovation barriers in various phases of the business cycle. Purpose of the article: The aim of the research is to determine the impact of innovation barriers and degrees of their importance on the innovation activity of Polish industrial processing enterprises during the business cycle. The time frame of the analysis covers three phases of the cycle: the prosperity period of 2004?2006, the global financial crisis of 2008?2010 and the recovery from 2012?2014. Methods: Pearson?s ?2 independence test and correspondence analysis were used for data analysis. The research results are presented in a graphical form of biplots that describe the coexistence of three types of variables: (1) types of enterprises and ownership sectors, (2) effects or objectives of innovative activity, and (3) innovation barriers and reasons for the lack of innovation. The basis of calculations were three databases covering the mentioned periods. Findings & Value added: High resistance of innovative activity of Polish industrial processing enterprises to economic fluctuations has been demonstrated. Innovation barriers and degrees of their importance had little impact on the operations of enterprises in the first of the analysed periods, when prosperity was booming. The impact of the global financial crisis on innovation activities proved to be counterintuitive, as enterprises have continuously achieved their goals and the importance of innovation barriers has diminished even more. In the third period, innovation barriers no longer had any significance for the innovation activities of enterprises. The phenomenon of a gradual decline in the importance of innovation barriers, regardless of the phases of the business cycle, was called the Polish Green Island Effect. The relationship found is a peculiarity which is probably unprecedented in recent world economic history.

Badanie oparto na takich zagadnieniach, jak świadomość wybranej grupy przedsiębiorców w dziedzinie ekoinnowacji, obszary wdrażania ekoinnowacji, opinie dotyczące potencjału ekoinnowacyjnego oraz czynniki wpływające na podejmowanie działań ekoinnowacyjnych.
This article summarises results of a research on eco-innovation, carried out on a group of companies participating in one of voluntary environmental initiatives, within the framework of Polish Cleaner Production Programme. The study was based on issues such as eco-innovation awareness, areas of eco-innovations’ implementation, opinions regarding ecoinnovative potential and factors influencing undertaking of eco-innovative activities.
