 In the first phase of bringing the Order of the Holy Sepulchre down to Poland in 1163, bishops of dioceses were founders and donors of the Order (Cracow Bishop Gedko, Plock Bishop Lapus) and acknowledged the foundations as the heritage left by their predecessors. In 15th Century they were Gniezno Archbishop Mikołaj Trąba and Kiev Bishop Michał Treska. Since 14th Century the assets belonging to the Order of Holy Sepulchre had been titbits for bishops, especially for the poorer dioceses but also for Cracow bishops (Piotr Gamrat). Conflicts arose from recruitment procedures conducted in the Order where bishops employed diocesan priests. Since 1567 or the establishment of the commendation, commendatory provosts, where bishops had been in majority, had contributed to moral decline of the Order. The positive conduct of Andrzej Batory and Maciej Łubieński exclusively stood out. Permanent disputes among bishops, the king, and the monastery for material benefits derivable from the Order’s assets, bad examples set by commendatory provosts, the lack of authority and authoritarianism resulted in the laxity of morals in the Order and concurrently accounted for the relaxation of discipline, violation of the rules and laws made by the Order, sloth, idleness, drunkenness and immorality. In 18th Century the attempts to reform the Order, made by the provosts, were insufficient and unsuccessful to control the status quo in the Order because of the bad example that came from the top.

Opis:
Being in charge of the deanery clergy, deans kept documentation which was stored in the dean’s archive. In the following article the records of the deanery of Brzeziny (in the 19th century this deanery was in the diocese of Kujawy-Kalisz) are presented as an example of usefulness of this kind of documentation for research. The bishop’s and consistory’s documentation suffered some losses in wars so the diocese government orders included in the dean’s records allow to complete these missing parts. The dean’s records contain information on the deanery clergy, the congregation and church property in a deanery; as well as some cartographic and typonymic documentation. The dean’s correspondence includes letters from the local secular and church institutions. Taking all these facts into consideration, it must be stated that the dean’s records are of great importance to the history of a given region.

Opis:
A list of clergymen serving in Szadek parish in the 18th century can be re-created on the basis of church inspections documents, providing information about priest working there at that time. There are records of seven such inspections, containing information with varying levels of detail, but nevertheless they provide such data as personal information, social descent, when and from whom they took holy orders and the date of starting service in the parish of Szadek. Analysis of this information indicates that all the vicars were of noble descent, and the priests working in the parish combined their pastoral duties with other functions (e.g. in a hospital, or as promoters of brotherhoods).

Artykuł jest prezentacją materiału empirycznego zebranego w badaniach na terenie diecezji koszalińsko-kołobrzeskiej, dotyczącego stosunku do duchowieństwa. Biorąc pod uwagę znane w dyskursie naukowym wymiary badań nad postawami wobec Kościoła i duchowieństwa, w socjologii religii badany jest odbiór Kościoła instytucjonalnego oraz duchowieństwa przez katolików, co stanowi jeden z bardziej kontrowersyjnych tematów obecnych w dyskursie publicznym obejmującym zagadnienia religijne. W prezentowanych badaniach respondenci byli pytani o stosunek do duchownych i sposobu wykonywania przez nich swojej misji, a także o przydatność księży dzisiaj, o ocenę zalet i wad osobowych oraz zawodowych księży, a także o pogląd na temat celibatu duchownych.
The article is a presentation of the empirical material collected in research in the Koszalin-Kolobrzeg (Kołobrzeg) diocese regarding the attitude to the clergy. Considering the dimensions of research on attitudes towards the Church and the clergy, the reception of the institutional Church and the clergy by Catholics is examined in the sociology of religion. This is one of the most controversial topics in public discourse covering religious issues. In the presented research, respondents were asked about the attitude to the clergy and the way they perform their mission, as well as the usefulness of priests today, advantages and disadvantages of personal and professional priests, as well as the view on the celibacy of the clergy.

The records of the Cracow Archdeanery from 1617 to 1619 contain a wealth of material, which enables the learning of the work, life and habits of the clergy. This applies specifically to the internal inspections, which enables understanding the clergy not just in regard to numbers or structure, but also by means, so for unknown, allows the group to be viewed in the light of ministry and morality. The Skała Deanery compared to other deaneries, lying more to the east, was characterized by the lowest numbers of ministers per statistical parish. In practice, the ministry in the majority of the parishes in the deanery was carried out by only one priest. The information, relating to the ministry and habits of the clergy, received from the inspector and witnesses under oath has allowed the precise determination of the extent of the observed phenomena. The inspection does not indicate any scandalous failings in the religious education of the faithful. A serious obstacle to effective ministry was the fact that nearly 30 % of parish priests did not reside in the parishes under their care. This problem dating from the period of the Middle Ages as well as during the time of the implementation of the Tridentine Reforms had remained, as yet, unsolved. The clergy’s morality left much to be desired, they were universally accused of drunkenness and the keeping of non-permitted contacts with women. In the case of the former, as we have shown, the accusations were quite diverse. According to very careful estimates, the behavior, with respect to alcohol, of 15 % of the clergy was scandalous. Transgressions of a sexual nature were no less widespread, which according to the testimony of witnesses affected 41 % of ministers. A significant majority of the accused (71 %) cohabitated with women, while the acts of the rest were more of a short-term character, often quite shocking. It is worth remembering, that the veracity of the testimony of witnesses is borne out by their agreement with each other and the fact that they were made under oath. The emerging picture leads to the conclusion that ministers of the Skała Deanery, raised in the atmosphere of the implementation of the Tridentine Reforms, were far removed from the ideal of ministers carrying out their functions as administrators and as leaders of parishioners, who consciously and purposefully guided the spiritual lives of their parishes.

W artykule przedstawiono obraz duchownych i ich charakterystyki obecne na kartach „Kroniki oliwskiej”. Cezurę końcową opracowania stanowi przełom XIII/XIV w., do końca rządów opata Rudigera. Z przeprowadzonych analiz wynika, że źródło to jest niezwykle oszczędne w opisie postaci ze środowiska duchowieństwa. Kronikarz unika podawania bliższych informacji na temat mnichów oliwskich. W Kronice brak też wzmianek o Gdańsku i jego duchowieństwie. Co ciekawe, w jego opisach przywołanych postaci, pojawiają się też błędy rzeczowe. Przedstawione w artykule zagadnienie wymaga dalszych badań dla okresu pierwszej połowy XIV w.
This study looks at the description of the clergy in the Cistercian Oliwa Chronicle. The study covers only the period up to the turn of the XIII / XIV century, including the rule of the abbot Rudiger. The analysis of the chronicle’s content shows it to be extremely sparing in detail concerning the clerical environment. The chronicler even avoids giving much information about the monks of Oliwa. There is no mention of Gdańsk or the clergy from this city in the chronicle. Interestingly, there are errors in the descriptions of the mentioned clergy. The problem presented in the paper requires further research including also analysis of further content of the chronicle from the first half of the 14th century.

Polish emigration in France was almost exclusively represented by the Polish workers who were Roman Catholic most of the cases, and in vast majority attached to the Church – which was highlighted in a personal letter written by the Ambassador of Poland in Paris. Recognizing political influences and communities in which fellow countrymen worked, the Ambassador tried to remedy the status quo by the letter addressed to Cardinal A. Hlond. According to the letter, the work performed reasonably and sensibly by the Polish clergymen had a crucial impact upon the Polish emigration. Transmitting the related compiled dossier to the Primate, he judged the performance of the Polish pastoral care in France to the extent of opportunities and negligence in respect of the Church and Homeland before 1926.
