    Opis:
    The paper provides characterisation of meteorological elements that essentially influenced tree−ring width of white willow growing in the riparian community in the Świętokrzyski National Park. Winter frosts, as well as worm, dry autumn, spring and early summer exerted positive effect on the white willow vascular cambium activity in the oncoming growing season. However the annual variation in tree−ring width depended, to the greatest degree, on air temperature in May−June and precipitation in April−July.

    Opis:
    This paper presents the results of an analysis on characteristics of birch crowns (Betula pendula Roth) in relation to measures of the growth space occupied by a single tree at a young age. It also presents the relationships between the seedling height and certain crown characteristics. The study focused on four-year-old common birches growing in four different areas in the Elk Forest District in either fresh mixed coniferous or broadleaved forest. The measurements conducted on the chosen trees were used to calculate their crown characteristics such as crown diameter, length, height to the crown base, relative length and spread. They were also used to determine the growth characteristics of a single tree’s growth space, such as the crown area projected onto the ground, single tree space and the percentage use of unit area. Furthermore, fresh and dry leaf mass was determined. The birches growing in the fresh mixed coniferous forest reached an average height of 1.30 m, whereas in the fresh mixed broadleaved forest, the height of the trees was lower and amounted to 0.67 m. 95% of the trees had crown diameters of 0.57 m to 0.74 m in the fresh mixed coniferous forest, but only 0.19 m to 0.25 m in the fresh mixed broadleaved forest. The average lengths of the crowns in the fresh mixed coniferous and broadleaved forests amounted to 0.97 m and 0.37 m respectively. The author shows that there is a statistically significant correlation between the seedling height and the other examined characteristics. The best correlation was found between the height and the length of the crown (r=0.9858) for birches growing in the fresh mixed coniferous forest and between the height and single tree space (r=0.8468) for birches growing in the fresh mixed broadleaved forest.

    Opis:
    The anatomy and functioning of stem secondary xylem in relation to the decline of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) was examined and the hypothesis that declining trees show changes in the structure of wood, resulting in impaired water transport was tested. Anatomical analyses were carried out on samples comprising annual rings formed between 1970 and 2009 and collected at the breast height of the main stem of fifteen trees 40−90 years old. Trees were based upon health condition and classified as healthy, weakened or dead. Tree−ring widths as well as diameter and density of earlywood vessels were measured and the theoretical hydraulic conductivity index through the secondary xylem calculated by application of Hagen−Poisseuille formula. Over the whole investigated period the smallest early vessels were attribute to ashes dead at the time of sampling. In the period when dieback symptoms where manifested in the stand, the diminishment of vessels diameter occurred in weakened and eventually dead trees, whereas healthy trees produced even slightly larger vessels than before. Having large vessels implies that healthy trees were able to keep high hydraulic conductivity index, whereas trees in decline at this time produce smaller vessels and hence had reduced conductivity in respect to previous.

    Opis:
    Tree−ring analysis of pine stands living under the influence of industry in south−eastern part of Silesia−Krakow Upland was performed for the last years. Now the new transect was added in the Olkusz region. Previous studies showed the distinct relationship between number of trees with observed reductions and distance from main source of pollution it this region. On the sites localised nearest to zinc−works "Bolesław" the value and the duration of reduction periods were the biggest. On the sites of new transect (OL VI) situated to the north from site OL 15, the influence of zinc−works is rather uncertain. Because of the time of occurrence and the distance form zinc−work, the reductions observed here seem to be the reaction to the other factor – perhaps the local source of pollution. To explain this matter further studies in this region should be done.

    The paper presents the results of an analysis of the features of the growth space of a single tree in a 135 years old oak stand. The following measures of the growth space of a tree were selected and determined: crown projection area – pk [m2], crown diameter – dk [m], Seebach's growth space number (also called the crown deflection degree) – dk/d1,3, crown projection area to basal area ratio – d 2 k /d 2 1,3, space use degree – r/s, space of a single tree – ppd=pk·h [m3], crown spread (crown deflection coefficient) – dk /h and percentage use of a unit area – pwjp=100·pk /pj [%]. Also the biosocial position of each tree was determined.

    Opis:
    The paper compares the properties of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) wood from stands growing in the lower and upper subalpine forest zone in terms of the tree−ring width, the share of latewood and the wood density. The investigation concerned material originating from plots established within the boundaries of the south−western incidence of spruce in Poland. Plots were located in the Sudety Mts. and in the Carpathians (tab. 1). On each plot fifteen Norway spruces were chosen and increment cores were sampled using the Pressler borer. The surface of the cores was smoothed and the tree−ring width was measured. The latewood zones were determined and the share of latewood was calculated. Then, the cores were divided into 2 cm sections, for which the relative wood density was determined. Tree−rings were wider in trees growing in the lower when compared with those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). Weak negative correlation was revealed between the elevation and the tree−ring width (r=–0.308). The latewood share was slightly higher in trees from the upper than those from the lower subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). However, no statistically significant correlation between the latewood share and elevation was recorded. The wood density was slightly lower in trees from the lower than those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2), but the difference was not statistically significant. The correlation between the wood density and the elevation turned out to be insignificant.

    Paper analyses relationships between radial growth and seven crown−related parameters (crown length, relative length, width, slenderness, projection area and volume as well as single tree space) for ten alien and native tree species growing in 'common garden' conditions in the WULS−SGGW Forest Experimental Station in Rogów (central Poland). Significant correlation was found between 10− and 15−years mean tree−ring width and all analysed crown parameters as well as single tree space for Abies grandis, Abies nordmanniana and, except for crown length and its relative length, for Pinus sylvestris. No relationship was observed between radial increment of Larix decidua, Pseudotsuga menziesii and Quercus rubra and any of analysed crown parameters.
