    Opis:
    The paper presents laboratory test results of the effect of water extracts from the aboveground parts of herbaceous plants on seed germination and germinant growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Under Polish site conditions species considered suitable for plantations as ground cover plants were selected for the experiment. The use of cover crops may be an alternative for the manual, mechanical and chemical methods of protecting forest plantation against weeds. The results of the research concerning allelopathic effect of the ground cover plants point to the uselessness of their application in areas designated for seeding or natural seeding of Scots pine during green mass decomposition of cultivated plants.

    In the work external friction and elasticity of beech nuts were measured taking into consideration their classification into the defined embryo development classes. An attempt was made to answer the question whether the mentioned physical−and−mechanical properties are distinctive features of beech seeds and to determine the theoretical separation effectiveness on the basis of the analysed properties.

    Local Seed Testing Stations quarterly send a report to Forest Research Institute (FRI) referring to seed analysis results. The FRI prepares a summary from these data. On the basis of ten−year period of research one has discovered significant differentiations in mass and viability of European alder seeds (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.) within years and among natural−forest regions.

    Opis:
    The effect of the snow cover on the survival of beech seeds from the time seeds fell onto the ground until the appearance of seedlings was investigated during two seasons at the study sites in the Babiogórski National Park and in the Ojcowski National Park. The obtained results show that snow cover has influence on the shaping of a spatial pattern of seed survival, and on the appearance of germinated seedlings. However, no decisive influence of snow cover was shown on the appearance of seedlings. The drying of the germinated seeds is the main cause of their mortality.

    Opis:
    The aim of the study was to estimate the diversity of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) seeds in Poland in the years 1992−2004. The investigation started in 1992 when seeds were collected from thirteen selected beech provenances and continued in the following period 1995−2004 with samples of seeds from Seed−Quality Assessment Laboratory. Significant differences in size, shape, vitality and weight of the beech seeds were found between crop years and regions of Poland.

    Opis:
    Critical transport velocity, thickness, width, length, angle of sliding friction and weight of small−leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) seeds from five batches, harvested in four neighboring seed regions in Poland, were determined. The values of shape factor, cross−sectional area, volume and density were calculated for each seed. The results were compared using standard statistical methods (simple ANOVA, correlation, single−variable and multivariate regression analysis). The highest correlation was observed between weight of seeds and their thickness and width. Majority of regression equations developed in the study was characterized by a relatively high percentage of explained variation, taking into account the type of experimental material.

    Paper presents results of the study on infestation of cones of Abies alba Mill. by insects. They were represented by conophages: Barbara herrichiana Obr. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Dioryctria abietella (Den. et Schiff.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Earomyia impossibile Morge (Diptera: Lonchaeidae) as well as seminiphages: Megastigmus suspectus Borr.     Opis:
    The research was conducted in beech−fir and beech stands in the territory of the Babiogórski and Ojcowski national parks. The obtained results showed that the density of seedlings after the autumn seed fall was small. The seed fraction from which seedlings emerged did not exceed 8%. In the Babiogórski National Park, no spatial relationship was found between seed and seedling abundance. However, such relationship was found in beech and sycamore in the Ojcowski National Park during one season. This was associated with a lower density of seed predating rodents in the forests around Ojców than on the Babia Góra and the specificity of the environmental providing a wide variety of living conditions for small mammals.
