Opis:
The research was conducted in Tartous Governorate during the two agricultural seasons (2018-2019 and 2019-2020) under control conditions, the aim of the research is to study the relationship between the productivity of five promising strains of bread wheat (‘ACSAD 1256’, ‘Douma 58847’, ‘Douma 58585’, ‘Douma 64453’, ‘ACSAD 1149’) and two cultivars (‘Douma 2’ and ‘Douma 4’) and some quantitative indicators of drought: stress tolerance index (STI), mean of productivity (MP), modified stress tolerance index (MSTI), and relative yield (RY). Cultivation was carried out in pots filled with light sandy silty soil, and three treatments of 70, 50, and 30% of the field capacity were applied in addition to the control and with three replications for each treatment. The strains ‘Douma 58585’ and ‘Douma 58847’ gave high yield values for grain in the two agricultural seasons. It was also found that there were significant differences between the two seasons in yield between the control and drought stress factors and drought tolerance indicators, such as stress tolerance index, modified stress tolerance index (MSTI), mean of productivity (MP), and relative yield (RY). On the other hand, a positive and strong relationship was found between STI, MSTI, and MP in both treatments and both seasons. The research concluded that the best indicators, which were related to the productivity, whether in the control or transactions and in the two growing seasons together, are STI and MP, which are promising indicators in the classification of stress-tolerant cultivars or strains.

Opis:
In order to evaluate morphological and physiological traits related to drought tolerance and to determine the best criteria for screening and identification of drought-tolerant genotypes, we grew two tolerant genotypes (MCC392, MCC877) and two sensitive genotypes (MCC68, MCC448) of chickpea under drought stress (25% field capacity) and control (100% field capacity) conditions and assessed the effect of drought stress on growth, water relations, photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and chlorophyll content in the seedling, early flowering and podding stages. Drought stress significantly decreased shoot dry weight, CO2 assimilation rate (A), transpiration rate (E), and PSII photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) in all genotypes. In the seedling and podding stages, PSII photochemical efficiency was higher in tolerant genotypes than in sensitive genotypes under drought stress. Water use efficiency (WUE) and CO2 assimilation rate were also higher in tolerant than in sensitive genotypes in all investigated stages under drought stress. Our results indicated that water use efficiency, A and Fv/Fm can be useful markers in studies of tolerance to drought stress and in screening adapted cultivars of chickpea under drought stress.

Opis:
e adaptability of plants to drought not only includes their ability to resist drought stress, but also their ability to recover aer stress is relieved. In this study, a weighting method was used to control the soil water content to produce a soil water stress gradient. e effects of drought and rewatering on the changes in osmotic adjustment substance content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthetic characteristics of potted Dicranostigma henanensis seedlings were measured on Day 28 aer the imposition of watering treatments and Day 7 aer rewatering. During the drought stress process, the relative electrical conductivity, thiobarbituric acid, water use efficiency, and proline content displayed a continuously increasing trend. Further, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate constantly decreased, while the chlorophyll content first increased and then decreased. Aer rehydration, superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1) activity and photosynthetic parameters quickly recovered to the CK level (soil moisture is 75%–80% of the maximum water holding capacity in the field), indicating that D. henanensis plants have a strong ability to repair the damage caused by drought stress. In particular, the photosynthetic machinery may have sophisticated regulation and repair mechanisms, which may be associated with its stable photosystem. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that the D. henanensis plant has a strong ability to adapt to arid environments, and therefore could be an excellent ornamental flower for landscaping in arid and semiarid areas.

Forty safflower genotypes were grown under normal irrigation and drought stress. In the first experiment, the allelopathic potential of shoot residues was evaluated using the sandwich method. Each genotype residue (0.4 g) was placed in a sterile Petri dish and two layers of agar were poured on that. Radish seeds were placed on agar medium. The radish seeds were cultivated without safflower residues as the controls. The length of the radicle, hypocotyl, and fresh biomass weight and seed germination percentages were measured. A pot experiment was also done on two genotypes with the highest and two with the lowest allelopathic activity selected after screening genotypes in the first experiment. Before entering the reproductive phase, irrigation treatments (normal irrigation and drought stress) were applied. Shoots were harvested, dried, milled and mixed with the topsoil of new pots and then radish seeds were sown. The pots with safflower genotypes were used to evaluate the effect of root residue allelopathy. The shoot length, fresh biomass weight, and germination percentage were measured. Different safflower genotypes showed varied allelopathic potential. The results of the first experiment showed that Egypt and Iran-Khorasan genotypes caused maximum inhibitory responses and Australia and Iran-Kerman genotypes resulted in minimum inhibitory responses on radish seedling growth. Fresh biomass weight had the most sensitivity to safflower residues. The results of the pot experiment were consistent with the results of in vitro experiments. Residues produced under drought stress had more inhibitory effects on the measured traits. Safflower root residue may have a higher level of allelochemicals or different allelochemicals than shoot residue.

Opis:
The effect of drought stress on regular cambium activity and wood formation in stems of two different clones of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was investigated. Tissue samples were taken during the growing season from May to September 2010. Artificial drought stress, induced by long-term sheltering of the soil, was significantly manifested in clone 15. In the stressed individual, the period of cambium activity was shorter, the total number of formed cells was lower and the resulting tree ring was narrower. The number of cells in the phases of postcambial growth and secondary cell wall formation was significantly lower in comparison to the control tree. The tracheid lignification process was slower in the tree stressed by water deficit and the first mature tracheids were observed later. On the other hand, in clone 18 probably genetic dispositions played an important role as no considerable deviations in the cambium activity and new wood cells production were observed. Fitting xylem increments to the Gompertz function showed that the period of the most intensive cell formation was at the turn of June and July and the maximum daily production of new cells was higher in non-stressed individuals than in the stressed ones. The results of the experiment lead us to the conclusion that drought stress can significantly affect the cambium activity of some clones, the differentiation process of anatomical elements, and thus also the resulting tree ring width.

The aim of the research was to determine the influence of biostimulants amino acids and amino acids + Ascophyllum nodosum filtrate on two broccoli cultivars ‘Agassi’ and ‘Tiburon’ and their response to soil drought. The plants were watered with Ascophyllum nodosum filtrate before planting and sprayed with amino acids after planting three times. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were performed before, during and after stress. They showed a considerable difference in cultivars’ response to stress, with ‘Agassi’ being more sensitive. Application of biostimulants enhanced the tolerance to drought stress. Maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII was unchanged, whereas the quantum yield of electron transport and photochemical fluorescence quenching values increased and the non-photochemical fluorescence quenching decreased. Moreover, the apparent photosynthetic electron transport rate rose. Chlorophyll content index was affected by the cultivar and application of biostimulants.

Opis:
Chickpea is an important food legume cultivated in semiarid regions, where water scarcity and nutrient deficiencies negatively affect crop production. This study aimed to investigate the effect of zinc and silicon from different sources, including bulk and nanostructures, on various biochemical traits of chickpea plants grown under field conditions in Maragheh, Northwest Iran. The main experimental factor consisted of three soil moisture levels: irrigation to 90% of field capacity (FC), 60% FC, and 30% FC. The subplots were assigned for foliar application of different fertilizers: control (distilled water), zinc sulfate (ZnSO), silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs), ZnSO + SiO2 NPs, and zinc-containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs -Zn). The results showed that although decreased soil moisture had a negative impact on several biochemical processes, foliar application of Zn and Si in both conventional bulk and nanostructure significantly affected plant antioxidant system, plasma membrane integrity, and the concentrations of photosynthetic pigments and compatible solutes. However, the most inducing effects on catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and anthocyanin were observed with the foliar spray of MSNPs-Zn and ZnSO + SiO2 under 60% FC. Moreover, foliar spray of MSNPs -Zn alleviated the negative effects of water deficit stress on photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a /b and carotenoid content). Water stress significantly induced the accumulation of free proline in the leaves. Overall, the results indicated that foliar spray of MSNPs -Zn, especially under 60% FC, improved the plant’s defense system, scavenged reactive oxygen species, and enhanced the accumulation and stability of pigments, thereby mitigating the effects of drought stress.

The aim of the study was to determine the changes of plant surface wettability caused by environmental drought stress. Two Polish cultivars of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) Poldek and Stratus were tested. The low soil moisture was stabilised at pF 3.5 while the control soil moisture at pF 2.2. The wettability was determined by water contact angle. The measurements were performed on fresh leaves before and after washing in chloroform. Generally, drought led to hydrophobisation of the surface of plant leaves. The use of chloroform caused greater changes in contact angle values for stressed than for control plants, but this reaction was variety-specific and leaf-age dependent.
Celem badań było określenie zmian zwilżalności powierzchni liści jęczmienia spowodowane stresem suszy. Badano dwie polskie odmiany jęczmienia jarego (Hordeum vulgare) – Poldek i Stratus.

Opis:
The introduction of new genotypes of crop plants is among the most strategic research programmes, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. To study the effect of drought stress on seed yield and some physiological traits of promising lines of rapeseed at different sowing dates, an experiment was conducted for two years (2015-2017) in a semi-arid region of Iran. In this research, two conventional sowing dates were set in October 12 and November 1 (late sowing). Irrigation was carried out at two levels: normal irrigation (control) and irrigation interruption from the silique formation stage to the next stage (late-season drought stress). The genotypes included four promising lines (L1112, L1091, L1093, L1206), and a cultivar (Okapi) as a control. Results showed that delayed sowing and drought stress increased carbohydrate content and decreased seed yield, with the highest carbohydrate content and highest yield loss in L1112 and the lowest carbohydrate and lowest yield loss in the L1206 line. Among the physiological traits measured, stomatal resistance had the highest degree of correlation and the highest direct negative effect on seed yield, which declined with increasing stomatal resistance. L1112 had the highest stomatal resistance (52.76 s cm-1) in delayed sowing and drought stress conditions. Therefore, L1206 and L1112 were revealed to be resistant and sensitive lines, respectively.

Dehydrins are proteins that play a role in the mechanism of drought tolerance. This study aimed at establishing dehydrin profile and accumulation in four local melon varieties of Iran: Mino, Dargazi, Saveii, and Semsori, as well as in a commercial variety Honeydew. Plants were treated with drought stress by adjusting the soil water content to 75, 50, 40, 30 and 20% of field capacity (FC) by withholding water. Water status of plants was monitored based on the seedling fresh weight (FW) and relative water content of leaves (RWC). Total protein content was extracted, then heat-stable protein (HSP) fraction was isolated for each variety and water stress treatment. After SDS-PAGE of HSP, Western blotting analysis was carried out with Anti-dehydrin rabbit (primary) and Goat anti rabbit (secondary) antibodies. ANOVA results showed that with decreasing FC below 75%, FW and RWC decreased, but these changes significantly varied among genotypes. On the basis of FW and RWC data under different drought stress treatments, the following drought-tolerant ranking was established: Mino > Dargazi > Saveii and Honeydew > Semsori, from tolerant to sensitive order. Results of Western blot analysis showed that expression of some proteins with molecular weights of 19– 52 kDa was induced in the studied varieties under drought stress (% FC). Expression level of the dehydrin proteins in different varieties was variable and also depending on the drought stress level applied. However, dehydrin proteins (45 and 50 kDa) showed strong expression levels in all varieties under severe drought stress (20% FC). The abundance of dehydrin proteins was higher in tolerant varieties (Mino and Dargazi) than in moderate and drought sensitive genotypes. Consequently, dehydrins represent a potential marker for selection of genotypes with enhanced drought tolerance.

Opis:
Agricultural production is continuously constrained by number of biotic and abiotic stresses. Among all, water defi- cit is one of the major abiotic stresses, which adversely affects crop growth and productivity. Drought impairs normal growth, reduces leaf expansion, stem extension and root proliferation, disrupts water relation and water use efficiency. It interferes with the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, resulting in the decline of light harvesting, generation of reducing power, and reduction of gas exchange and carbon fixation, which in turn, leads to the decline in plant growth and productivity water relations and re- duces water-use efficiency in plants and it finally leads to biomass and final yield reduction of crop plants. However, plants develop some mechanisms of drought tolerance, avoidance or escape. This review presents some aspects of changes in plant at morpho- logical, physiological and biochemical levels induced by drought.
