    Sabina Brzozowska’s monograph consists of a coherent collection of comparative and historical and literary studies of various artistic and ideological aspects found in selected works of Polish and European modernism. The author focuses on the dramas by Stanisław Wyspiański, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Tadeusz Rittner, Tadeusz Miciński and on the prose by Wacław Berent, Miciński and Thomas Mann. The interpretations of the works included in the monograph show a common area of European nineteenth-century culture, especially of the modernist period. Brzozowska’s reading experience focused on uncovering the intertextual and comparative relationships between, for instance, Wyspiański’s Wesele (The Wedding) and Mann’s Buddenbrooks, Berent’s Ozimina (Snow Crop) and Czarodziejska Góra (The Magic Mountain), Rittner and Ibsen. High art literature of the modernist period found its counterpoint in popular culture, including the new media. The author reconstructed this development dynamic of modernist culture in multiple versions.

    Theatre as the confluence of the collective and private trauma in Erigon by Jordan PlevnešThe text problematizes the concept of national history and trauma in the play Erigon, written by the contemporary Macedonian playwright Jordan Plevneš. The starting point of the analysis are some peculiarities of Plevneš’s poetics and of the theatrical conceptions of Antonin Artaud that are central to Erigon as well as the problem of the representation (and performance) of history in drama and theatre. In Erigon one can recognize the critique of eurocentrism and the European centres of power along with their influence on the formation of political and historical processes in Macedonia and the Balkans in general. The main question concerns the societal role of political theatre and its power. Teatr jako ujście zbiorowej i prywatnej traumy w Erigonie Jordana PlevnešaTekst prezentuje koncepcję historii narodowej i traumy w sztuce Erigon autorstwa współczesnego macedońskiego dramatopisarza – Jordana Plevneša. Punktem wyjścia do analizy są cechy charakterystyczne poetyki Autora oraz koncepcje teatralne Antonina Artauda, które zajmują w Erigonie miejsce centralne, podobnie jak problem reprezentacji (i performansu) historii w dramacie i teatrze. W Erigonie rozpoznać można krytykę eurocentryzmu obecnego w politycznych i historycznych procesach w Macedonii, a także ogólnie na Bałkanach. Główne pytanie dotyczy roli teatru politycznego i jego siły oddziaływania na społeczeństwo.

    The previous attempts to present Tadeusz Miciński’s The Polish Thermopylae on the stage ended in either a complete failure or at least unfulfilled expectations. The multi-dimensional text-charade, full of numerous historical and philosophical references, constitutes a true challenge for an audience and a director. The ideological potential of the text encourages risky updates and simplifications. The plot of Miciński’s play is set in the years 1787–1813, starting with the meeting of King Stanisław August with Empress Catherine II and ending with the death of Prince Józef Poniatowski in the Elster River; yet, it takes place in the head of the dying prince. The Polish Thermopylae condenses time in a mysterious way and provokes the spectator to interpret historical events from the perspective of a mystery play. Jan Klata, the director, abandons allusions to a mystery play, uses many cliches from the sphere of pop-culture, and exposes the presence of the grotesque in Miciński’s play. In his impressive post-modern show, reality is arranged like a video clip: a juxtaposition of war and sports and erotic conquest, a conventional presentation of Empress Catherine II as the insatiable Messallina, a gymnastic amploi of Patiomkin as an allusion to Putin’s muscle flexing are not an intellectual challenge for the contemporary audience. And the ideal of Miciński’s theatre is the theatre being the judgement of conscience, the theatre being the mirror, the “mouse-trap” that never becomes out of date.

    Artykuł opisuje zmiany w sposobie prowadzenia dyskursu w polskiej dramaturgii historycznej ostatnich lat na przykładzie tekstów dotyczących Ziem Odzyskanych. Od niedawnabohaterami spektakli stają się osoby pozostawione na marginesie wielkiej historii. To Niemcy wysiedlani z terenów zajętych przez Polskę, ale także ludność ze Wschodu przesiedlana na te ziemie. Teatr przekazujący doświadczenia wykorzenionych i osadzonych, dając im szansę mówienia własnym głosem, pozwala przełamać „historyczną amnezję” grup wykluczanych i pozbawionych przeszłości. Otwiera tak postkolonialną perspektywę widzenia rodzimej historii. Omówione w artykule teksty i przedstawienia to Niech żyje wojna! Pawła Demirskiego, Transfer! Jana Klaty i wyreżyserowana przez Marcina Libera inscenizacja dramatu Trash Story Magdy Fertacz.
    The article describes the changes in discourse in recent Polish historical plays on the basis of texts about the Recovered Territories. The characters in the play are the people left on the margins of great history: the Germans deported from the territories of pre-war Germany that became part of Poland after World War II and the people from the East resettled by the authorities to this land. The theatre that transfers the experience of the uprooted and the resettled gives them the opportunity to speak with their own voice. The theatre breaks the „historical amnesia” of those who used to be excluded and voiceless. It opens a new, postcolonial perspective on Polish history. The discussed texts and plays are Paweł Demirski’s Niech żyje wojna! (Long live the war!), Transfer! by Jan Klata and Marcin Liber’s staging of Trash Story written by Magda Fertacz.

    Opis:
    The article was aimed at analyzing the phenomenon metatheatricality in the modern Belarusian drama The sources of construction of meta theater date back to intermedia. Just as they are intended to diversify art the framework. therefore songs, dance, music inserts and conventional scenes play an important role in them. The second type, which originates from the prologue is the theme of the theater within the theater, often used for presenting artistic views of the author. Metadramaticality can hardly be considered only in terms of formal although undoubtedly changes the style of the dramatic text. It simultaneously implements aesthetic evaluation (accurate or caricatured, grotesque reflection of external reality or the reality of work of art and, which seems to be the most important), it becomes an expression of the philosophy and the world outlook of the author, an expression of the way they see and interpret the crucial relationship between the real world and the world presented.
    W artykule została podjęta analiza zjawiska metateatralności we współczesnym dramacie białoruskim. Źródła konstrukcji metateatralnych sięgają intermediów. Tak jak one mają na celu urozmaicenie sztuki ramowej, dlatego dużą rolę odgrywają w nich piosenki, taniec, wstawki muzyczne, konwencjonalne scenki. Drugim typem, wywodzącym się z prologów, jest motyw teatru w teatrze wykorzystywany często do zaprezentowania poglądów artystycznych autora. Metadramatyczność trudno rozpatrywać jedynie w kategoriach formalnych, choć niewątpliwie zmienia ona stylistykę tekstu dramatycznego. Wprowadza jednocześnie wartościowanie estetyczne (wierne lub karykaturalne, groteskowe odbicie rzeczywistości zewnętrznej lub rzeczywistości dzieła) oraz – co wydaje się najważniejsze – staje się wyrazem filozofii i światopoglądu autora, wyrazem sposobu, w jaki dostrzega on i interpretuje kluczową relację między światem rzeczywistym a światem przedstawionym.
    У артыкуле праведзены аналіз з’явы метатэатральнасці ў сучасный беларускай драматургіі. Свой пачатак метатэатральныя канстуркцыі бяруць з інтэрмедый. Паколькі ствараліся яны з мэтай зрабіць больш разнастайнай асноўную п’есу, істотную ролю адыгрываюць у іх песня, танец, музычныя ўстаўкі, простыя сцэнкі. Другім тыпам, які выводзіць свой радавод з пралогаў, з’яўляецца матыў тэатра ў тэатры, што часта выкарыстоўваецца з мэтай прадстаўлення мастацкіх пазіцый аўтара. Метадраматычнасць, несумненна, змяняе стылістыку драматургічнага тэксту, аднак цяжка разглядаць яе выключна ў фармальных катэгорыях. Яна адначасова ўводзіць эстэтычную катэгарызацыю (вернае альбо карыкатурнае, гратэскнае адлюстраванне знешняй рэчаіснасці, альбо мастацкага свету твора), а таксама, што здаецца найважнейшым, робіцца выразам філасофіі і светапогляду аўтара, выразам аўтарскай інтэрпрэтацыі рэляцый паміж рэальным і мастацкім светам.

    The article discusses the research and editing work of Lucjan Rydel related to the Old Polish literature – the two-volume edition of Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata, translated by Piotr Kochanowski as Goffred albo Jeruzalem wyzwolona, prepared by Rydel and published in Krakow in 1902–1903 by Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in the series Biblioteka [96] Marta M. Kacprzak Pisarzów Polskich (Polish Writers’ Library). It is the result of Rydel’s research on the life and work of Piotr Kochanowski – Jan Kochanowski’s nephew, Renaissance poet, Polish translator of Ariosto and Tasso. In the Biblioteka Pisarzów Polskich it was planned to publish, in addition to Goffred, a 5-volume edition of Ariosto’s Orlando furioso translated by Piotr Kochanowski and a monograph on Kochanowski. Rydel’s materials for these books were lost during World War II, but they are known from the accounts of Józef Tretiak and Roman Pollak. Rydel’s edition of Goffred was critically reviewed by Adam Antoni Kryński, Ignacy Chrzanowski and Aleksander Brückner.

    Lucjan Rydel authored a dramatic trilogy about King Sigismund II Augustus. He described the 16th century with great erudition as regards the material and political history of the period. He had studied numerous historical records as well as scholarly works. He also wrote an academic essay on Charles de Nassau. The main areas of his interest in history were texts of didactic and popular character. He wrote a monograph entitled Queen Hedwig, where he collected the themes of female rule in literature and art. He published brochures on buildings of historical interest in Krakow, Warsaw and Vilnius. He brought out A Short History of Poland and History of Poland for Everybody, both of which were written during the Great War. His ambition was to write accessible textbooks on the history of the Polish nation and Polish state with a view to boosting the patriotism of Poles. In matters of ideology, his works were leaning towards conservative views.
