animal welfare - Opis:
- The more social and more intelligent animal is, the more stimulation is needed to provide optimal level of welfare to an animal. Animal welfare is based on complex interactions between somatic, psychological and social stimuli fulfilling needs of various levels. This is also true in case of dogs – animals that were domesticated as first species due to their high social and communicative skills, as well as their cognitive capabilities. In the context of those facts, it is almost impossible to explain, why Polish legislation does not require that animal shelters provide environmental and social enrichments. Environmental enrichments are required by law for animals used in scientific experiments; for animals kept in zoos and for farm animals in industrial farming, but not for companion species kept in shelters. This is even more surprising considering the fact that homeless animals spend long years in shelters while the other categories of animals mentioned, live much shorter based on the destiny designed for them by humans. What consequences does it create for both: animals in shelters and human societies? How this clearly negative situation can be changed?
