Opis:
In the paper, the vision-based method of static in-plane deflection measurement of a structure is presented. Displacements of measurement points of the structure under the load are computed by means of the normalized digital image correlation coefficient. The application of the homography transformation enables the deflection field to be computed from two images of the structure acquired from distinct points in space. The scale coefficient calculation and marker matching algorithms have been introduced in order to increase the level of automation of the method. The paper presents the results of numerical investigations of the uncertainty propagation in the proposed algorithms. The qualitative comparison of the numerical data and the results of the experiment have been shown.
W pracy przedstawiono wizyjną metodę pomiaru statycznego ugięcia konstrukcji. Przemieszczenia punktów pomiarowych wyznaczane są z wykorzystaniem znormalizowanego współczynnika korelacji wzajemnej. Zastosowanie przekształcenia homograficznego umożliwiło pomiar pola przemieszczeń na podstawie fotografii konstrukcji wykonanej z dowolnego punktu przestrzeni. W celu zwiększenia stopnia automatyzacji metody wprowadzono algorytmy wyznaczania współczynnika skali oraz dopasowania znaczników. W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki symulacji numerycznych propagacji niepewności w proponowanym algorytmie. Pokazano wyniki jakościowego porównania danych symulacyjnych i wyników eksperymentalnych.

Opis:
Different kind of foams, usually made from polymers, metals, ceramics, glass, etc. have been widely used in various branches of civil engineering since the 80s. The most common are polyurethane foams. Since their role in construction nowadays is not only to act as a thermal barrier but also to take some of loads, the engineers need to know also their mechanical properties. This implies that manufacturers or designers must perform a number of laboratory tests in order to find a set of substantial parameters of this particular material. Due to noticeable orthotropic behavior of foams, one needs to carry out several laboratory tests to identify elastic properties only. Here, an enhanced testing methodology is proposed to reduce the number of tests required for characterization of elastic orthotropic properties of foams. By combining the advanced measurement techniques, non-traditional experimental setup, numerical modeling and inverse analysis one can capture all nine elastic properties from just two or three tests. In the paper, full experimental and numerical procedures are presented and validated by noisy pseudo-experimental data.

The mechanical performance of underground flexible structures such as buried pipes or culverts made of plastics depend not only on the properties of the structure, but also on the material surrounding it. Flexible drains can deflect by 30% with the joints staying tight, or even invert. Large deformations of the structure are difficult to model in the framework of Finite Element Method, but straightforward in Discrete Element Methods. Moreover, Discrete Element approach is able to provide information about the grain–grain and grain–structure interactions at the microscale. This paper presents numerical and experimental investigations of flexible buried pipe behaviour with focus placed on load transfer above the buried structure. Numerical modeling was able to reproduce the experimental results. Load repartition was observed, being affected by a number of factors such as particle shape, pipe friction and pipe stiffness.

The paper presents the authors’ method and test rig for performing the deformation analysis of unmanned aircraft fuselages. To conduct the analysis, the DIC system was used, as well as a test rig designed and constructed by the authors, equipped with a dedicated control and load control system. The article presents a description of the research capabilities of the test rig developed for testing the deformation of unmanned aircraft fuselages. Due to the specific operating conditions of the designed fuselage, the test rig developed allows the simulation of loads corresponding to different flight conditions. In addition, it is possible to change the forces acting on the fuselage simultaneously for all servos or each of them separately. Finally, results showing the displacement of component control points for the considered fuselage versions are presented. The tests carried out using the developed test rig allowed the verification of the maximum deformations. The two versions of the composite fuselage of an aerial vehicle have been compared in the paper. The created measurement system and performed analyzes have enabled us to identify and quantitatively analyze the weaknesses of the construction. The results have enabled us to geometrically modify the constructionso the mass of the fuselage reduced by 19% and a coefficient of construction balance increased by 22%.

Opis:
Digital image correlation (DIC) is a powerful full-field displacement measurement technique that has been used in various studies. The first step in the DIC is to create a random speckle pattern, where the spraying method is usually employed. However, creating an optimal pattern and modification in the spraying method is not convenient. Furthermore, the size of speckles which is not so small in spraying method, limits the minimum size of the field of study. In the present research, a convenient novel technique was introduced and investigated to generate a practical kind of speckle pattern with small speckles for evaluating smaller fields of view using nanoparticles. The pattern was created by spreading a mixture of different black and white nanoparticles. To this end, the black graphene oxide particles were mixed with white nanoparticles of titanium oxide, zirconium oxide and silicon to obtain three mixtures. Displacement tests show that the mixture of graphene and titanium provides the best DIC performance. More granularly, graphene and titanium were mixed at three different ratios to find the optimal combination. Subsequently, the accuracy of the new patterning method was analyzed via tensile testing and the results were compared against those of conventional method with various subset sizes.

Mechanical cutting allows separating of sheet material at low cost and therefore remains the most popular way to produce laminations for electrical machines and transformers. However, recent investigations revealed the deteriorating effect of cutting on the magnetic properties of the material close to the cut edge. The deformations generate elastic stresses in zones adjacent to the area of plastically deformed and strongly affect the magnetic properties. The knowledge about residual stresses is necessary in designing the process. This paper presents the new apprach of modeling residual stresses induced in shear slitting of grain oriented electrical steel using mesh-free method. The applications of SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) methodology to the simulation and analysis of 3D shear slitting process is presented. In experimental studies, an advanced vision-based technology based on digital image correlation (DIC) for monitoring the cutting process is used.

Opis:
This article presents the results of the application of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) to measurements of in-plane shear modulus and strength of three different carbon fiber reinforced laminates. Three different approaches to shear strain calculations via DIC are evaluated and compared with standard strain gage measurements. Calculation of shear strain based on averaging DIC strain values of strain gages area in most cases yielded results closest to strain gages, while measurements based on single point strain measuring differed the most from strain gages. These results are attributed to shear strain distribution in the center area of the specimen. Thermoplastic matrix fabric reinforced composite had the lowest shear strength at 5% of shear strain, but the highest ultimate shear strength and strain at failure. Of thermosetting materials, laminate reinforced with unidirectional carbon fiber had shear modulus about 10% lower, than fabric reinforced laminate, but higher ultimate strength and strain at failure. This behavior is attributed to the presence of weaves in fabric reinforcing the laminate, causing shear stiffening of the material, but lowering its ability to deform under shear loading.

The paper presents results of experimental investigations of strain localization in concrete using a non-destructive method called Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. This technique measures surface displacements from digital images. The model tests were carried out with notched concrete specimens under three-point bending. Three different beam sizes and two different concrete mixes were used. During experiments, load--deflection curves and evolution of fracture process zone were determined. The measured size effect in strength was compared with the deterministic size effect law by Bazant (1984) and experimental results by Le Bellégo et al (2003).

In this paper, the applications of mesh-free SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) continuum method to the simulation and analysis of trimming process is presented. In dealing with shearing simulations for example of blanking, piercing or slitting, existing literatures apply finite element method (FEM) to analysis of this processes. Presented in this work approach and its application to trimming of aluminum autobody sheet allows for a complex analysis of physical phenomena occurring during the process without significant deterioration in the quality of the finite element mesh during large deformation. This allows for accurate representation of the loss of cohesion of the material under the influence of cutting tools. An analysis of state of stress, strain and fracture mechanisms of the material is presented. In experimental studies, an advanced vision-based technology based on digital image correlation (DIC) for monitoring the cutting process is used.

Purpose: Previous biomechanical studies have estimated the strains of bone and bone substitutes using strain gages. However, applying strain gages to biological samples can be difficult, and data collection is limited to a small area under the strain gage. The purpose of this study was to compare digital image correlation (DIC) strain measurements to those obtained from strain gages in order to assess the applicability of DIC technology to common biomechanical testing scenarios. Methods: Compression and bending tests were conducted on aluminum alloy, polyurethane foam, and laminated polyurethane foam specimens. Simplified single-legged stance loads were applied to composite and cadaveric femurs. Results Results: Showed no significant differences in principal strain values (or variances) between strain gage and DIC measurements on the aluminum alloy and laminated polyurethane foam specimens. There were significant differences between the principal strain measurements of the non-laminated polyurethane foam specimens, but the deviation from theoretical results was similar for both measurement techniques. DIC and strain gage data matched well in 83.3% of all measurements in composite femur models and in 58.3% of data points in cadaveric specimens. Increased variation in cadaveric data was expected, and is associated with the well-documented variability of strain gage analysis on hard tissues as a function of bone temperature, hydration, gage protection, and other factors specific to cadaveric biomechanical testing. Conclusions: DIC techniques provide similar results to those obtained from strain gages across standard and anatomical specimens while providing the advantages of reduced specimen preparation time and full-field data analysis.

Opis:
In this work the possibility to characterize mechanical components combining thermoelastic measurement technique (TSA) and digital image correlation (DIC) is studied. The combination of these two different methodologies allows to analyze thermo-mechanical characteristics of materials such as plastic and rubber, which are difficult to study with the only thermoelastic methodology. The digital image correlation allows to determinate the first invariant of deformation ε1, using a differential thermocamera. Lack of adiabatic conditions, essential for methodology use, makes analysis not simple. Digital image correlation allows to obtain the same information by correlating digital images acquired during static or dynamic deformationof an object, but with limitations linked to acquisition system. An accurate analysis is dedicated to the study of first invariant of deformation related to Young’s module variation, performed by load cycles with variable amplitude and displacement. Comparative analysis between the two measurement methodologies has been performed on rubber samples loaded by dynamic compression.

In this work, the influence of strain rate on the anisotropy of the Ti6Al4V titanium alloy has been analyzed. Tensile tests of notched specimens were carried out in three loading orientations (0°, 45°, and 90°) with respect to the rolling direction, using the servo-hydraulic testing machine and Hopkinson bar. Investigation was supported by the digital image correlation analysis of strain distribution on the specimen surface and assessment of the fracture mechanism. The Ti6Al4V titanium alloy reveals a typical strain rate hardening behavior; however, strain rate sensitivity is independent of the loading orientation. Increases of the loading orientation results in material softening, observed as lowered yield stress, whereas plastic strain exponent and modulus remain unaffected. Fracture strain decreases with loading orientation at quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions.

Opis:
In this paper, the possibility of replacing tensile extensometers with a non-contacting device for measuring elongation has been analyzed. An example of a non-contacting device is a Digital Image Correlation System (DIC). Such systems are widely used in various areas, for example, biology or modern engineering. DIC systems have several advantages that seem to be promising for testing modern materials. The most important is the fact that there is no physical contact between the sample and the DIC and therefore no additional force is applied during the experiment. On the other hand, a lack of contact with the sample can cause large measurement inaccuracies. Another advantage would be that a DIC can measure strain on the whole surface of the sample in all directions, instead of measuring part of the surface in one direction like in other extensometers. Because of these abilities, the environment impact on test bench (DIC + load device), and differences between conducted experiment with normalized tensile test needed to be investigated. The testing machine was replaced by a DIC system cooperating with a tension-compression module. The proposed method was used to monitor and record the images to determine the basic properties of 13MnSiCr7 grade steel. Twelve tests were performed. The analysis was done by comparing the values of mechanical properties obtained in a static tensile test, such as yield strength, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, elongation of the material; with the values of these properties determined experimentally. For each sample, stress-strain curves were evaluated. To check if the results were correct, a Q-Dixon test was performed in each case, confidence intervals were also calculated. Finally, the obtained properties were compared with those from the standard tensile test acquired from the manufacturer’s material card.

Opis:
ZnS-based mechanoluminescent film has been widely used in the fields of stress visualization and stress sensing, due to its high brightness and repeatable stable luminescent characteristics. To evaluate the flexible-elastic deformation performance of ZnS-based mechanoluminescent film, both visual inspection and digital image correlation (DIC) are, respectively, employed for measuring the ZnS-based mechanoluminescent film. ZnS:Cu2+ mechanoluminescent powders are first mixed with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to produce ZnS:Cu2+-PDMS mechanoluminescent film. Then, two measurement experiments are, respectively, conducted to investigate the mechanical response and the flexible-elastic deformation performance of the prepared ZnS:Cu2+-PDMS mechanoluminescent film. On one hand, the mechanical response performance of the ZnS:Cu2+-PDMS mechanoluminescent film is validated by visual monitoring of composite concrete fracture processes. On the other hand, the prepared ZnS:Cu2+-PDMS mechanoluminescent film is also measured by DIC to obtain its full-field deformations and strains information. The flexible-elastic deformation performance of the ZnS:Cu2+-PDMS mechanoluminescent film is well demonstrated by the DIC measured results.
