Opis:
Introduction. Researchers who study the problems of Internet addiction point out that this dependence is often co-morbid with symptoms of a variety of pathological disorders, including anxiety, depressive, somatization, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The goal of this study was to compare the severity of psychopathological symptoms in individuals at risk of Internet addiction (according to Young’s criteria) and those not at risk of developing this addiction with respect to gender and place of residence (urban vs. rural). Materials and method. The study included a group of 692 respondents (485 females and 207 males). The average age of the participants was 20.8 years. 56.06% of them lived in urban areas and 43.94% in rural areas. The following instruments were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire designed by the authors, Young’s 20-item Internet Addiction Test (IAT, Polish translation by Majchrzak and Ogińska-Bulik), and the “O” Symptom Checklist (Kwestionariusz Objawowy “O”, in Polish) by Aleksandrowicz. Results. Individuals at risk of Internet addiction showed significantly more severe pathological symptoms than the individuals who were not at risk of this addiction. There were differences in the severity of psychopathological symptoms between people at risk of Internet dependence living in urban and rural areas. Conclusions. Individuals at risk of Internet addiction were found to be characterized by a significantly higher severity of obsessive-compulsive, conversion, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Persons at risk of Internet addiction who lived in rural areas had significantly more severe psychopathological symptoms, mainly obsessive-compulsive, hypochondriac and phobic, compared to their urban peers.

Introduction. Depression is a mental illness widespread in the population and is the most common mental disorder. There has been an increase in number of depression diagnoses among the wider population in the past few years. Aim. The aim of the study was to gain knowledge regarding the attitudes towards depression and to measure the occurrence of depression symptoms among open populations of Polish and British people. Materials and methods. The study was conducted from March to May 2015 by posting an electronic survey on a social network in Polish and English language. 143 completed questionnaires were obtained. The method of diagnostic survey was used in this study. The research tools was a survey created by the authors and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results. Every third respondent acknowledged that they have a sufficient knowledge of depression. Based on BDI results, 75% of Poles and 39% of British did not show any signs of depression. Conclusions. The British understand the term “depression” correctly more often than Poles. The inhabitants of Poland and Great Britain take a positive attitude towards people with depression. The British have depressive symptoms more frequently than Poles. Nationality and age do not affect the severity of depressive symptoms in both groups.

The paper aimed to analyse the level of depression, anxiety and stress of female teachers and determine its association with the subjects’ psychosocial, sociodemographic, and lifestyle characteristics. A survey based on Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and International Physical Activity Questionnaire was carried out. Among teachers, 27.3% reported moderate or higher overall levels of negative emotional symptoms. Teachers with low physical activity level (PAL) were likelier to report higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress than those with moderate or high PAL. The study indicates the importance of PA interventions for maintaining mental health in this group.

Introduction: Diabetes is a disease whose course is strongly determined by self-monitoring and self-care. Ensuring metabolic control of diabetes is not only important for the current state of health, it also allows to maintain the body in the best condition despite the existing chronic disease. Purpose: To assess the relationship between sociodemographic factors and depression symptoms and the level of disease acceptance in diabetes. Materials and methods: The study used a diagnostic survey method with a questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Acceptance of Illness Scale. The study group consisted of 43 women (51%) and 41 men (49%). A total of 67% of respondents had diagnosed type 2 diabetes, 24% type 1 diabetes, and 6% LADA. Average disease duration was 15 years. Results: In the studied group, 15% of patients had diagnosed symptoms of depression; while according to the Beck Depression Inventory, depressive episodes occurred more often in mild (30%) and moderate (23%) severity. They were observed more often in people over 50 years old. Depression symptoms were significantly more common in the group of overweight and obese people (p=0.022, r(X,Y)=0.2490). Conclusions: The problem of depression increases with disease duration. People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have lower levels of disease acceptance. Disease acceptance is a factor that eliminates the occurrence of depressive disorders of varying severity.

Deaf sociocultural identity of the deaf is an important issue from the point of view of their psychological and social functioning. The present study was focused on people with prelingual deafness using cochlear implants (CI) demonstrating high skills in oral Polish language. The research question concerned the relation between the aforementioned identity and symptoms of depression, as well as the age, sex and age at cochlear implantation. The study included 28 prelingually deaf CI users aged between 18 and 40 and was conducted using N. Glickman’s DIDS, PHQ-9 and an information questionnaire. Deaf sociocultural identity is similar in terms of proportion of types of identities of the deaf to the results obtained in other studies, i.e. hearing and bicultural identities turned out to be predominant in the study group. The marginal identity only coexists with the presence of depression symptoms.

Opis:
Objectives COVID-19 has become a major source of stress for people around the world. Stressful life events play a role in the pathogenesis of sleep disorders such as insomnia which is considered a risk factor for anxiety and depression. Emotion regulation is an important factor linked with sleep and mental health problems. Therefore, the main goal of the present study was to examine whether insomnia could constitute a mediation mechanism that explains the relationship between emotion regulation strategies (rumination, reappraisal, suppression) and stress-induced mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods The cross-sectional study was conducted among young (M±SD 24.8±2.24) individuals (N = 281, 85.4% women) during the time of the third wave of infections in Poland. Data were collected by means of selfreport questionnaires, including the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire; Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire; Athens Insomnia Scale; Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. The direct and indirect effects of emotion regulation strategies on depression, anxiety, and stress were calculated using a bootstrap estimation technique. Results All analyzed indirect effects were significant. The results show that insomnia mediates the relationships between all 3 emotion regulation strategies and stress, anxiety and depression. Conclusions The presented results shed the light on the role of insomnia on the relationships between emotion regulation strategies and emotional states experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the present study suggests that educational and therapeutic interventions aimed at improving emotion regulation might be useful for improving symptoms of insomnia and, through it, symptoms of affective disorders. Background: Due to multiple morbidities, patients experience various symptoms that may be of psychogenic or somatic origin. Anxiety and depression can induce somatization and the feeling that ailments require urgent medical intervention. Aim of the study: This study aimed to: (1) identify which symptoms self-referral patients most commonly report at the emergency department (ED) and which medical diagnoses they are discharged with; and (2) determine whether the type and severity of symptoms, as well as, sociodemographic variables are related to anxiety and depression levels. Material and methods: The study included 110 patients who self-referred to the ED at the University Clinical Hospital in Opole. Diagnostic surveys and questionnaires were used, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and an original questionnaire developed by the authors. Results: Among those suffering from chronic diseases (n = 53; 48.62%), 12 patients (22.64%) did not complete a single visit to the PHCF (Primary Health Care Facility), and 30 patients (56.60%) did not complete a visit to OSC (Outpatient Specialist Care) during the previous 12 months. The most common cause of reporting to the ED were pain and a burning sensation in the chest (n = 29; 27.10%). During discharge, the most common diagnosis was “other chest pains” (n = 22; 20.00%). 82.73% (n = 91) of patients had clear anxiety disorders, and 68.18% (n = 75) had clear depressive disorders. Conclusions: In case of somatic symptoms without a discernible cause in patients, it is necessary to implement comprehensive measures within PHCF, such as periodic measurements of anxiety and depression severity, psychological consultation, and an in-depth medical interview. These data also suggest that proper clinical monitoring should be implemented, including clinical parameters relevant for chronic diseases and the number of visits to the PHCF and OSC.

Objectives: A casual relationship between temperament, job stress and depressive symptoms has not been established yet. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between job stress, temperament and depressive symptoms in female nurses at a Japanese general hospital. Material and Methods: A self-report survey was conducted among 706 nurses. We measured job stress, temperament, and depressive symptoms using the Brief-Job Stress Questionnaire, the TEMPS-A and a screening scale of items from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. In order to examine the causal relationship between the measures the stepwise multiple regression and path analyses were used. Results: Depressive symptoms were modestly correlated with job stress (γ = -0.23-0.30). Except for hyperthymic temperament measures, the correlations between depressive symptoms and temperament types were significant and moderate (γ = 0.36-0.50). Overtime, job control as well as depressive and cyclothymic types of temperament were significantly correlated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.15, p < 0.05; β = 0.19, p < 0.01; β = 0.26, p < 0.001; β = 0.32, p < 0.001, respectively). Path-analysis revealed that depressive and cyclothymic types of temperament influenced depressive symptoms both directly (β = 0.67, p < 0.001) and indirectly via job stress (β = 0.35, p < 0.001 from temperament to job stress; β = 0.20, p < 0.05 from job stress to depressive symptoms). Irritable and anxious types of temperament and quantitative job overload did not contribute to the path-analytic model. Conclusions: Health care professionals should consider temperament, especially depressive and cyclothymic types, in order to help employees cope better with job stress factors. We need further research about the effective intervention to help employees better cope with their job stress.

Introduction: A chronic or recurrent pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen occurs frequently in depressive patients. The pathogenesis of these symptoms is complex and not fully understood. The aim of the study was to estimate the gastric myoelectrical activity in this group of patients. Material and methods: The study group consisted of 90 subjects, including 71 women and 19 men (mean age – 38.0±8.1). Among them three groups were divided: healthy subjects (K, n=30), depressive patients with dyspepsia (group II, n=30) and depressive patients with Helicobacter pylori infection (group III, n=30). All the subjects completed Hamilton Depression Scale and the gastric myoelectrical activity examination with Polygraph–Medtronic A/S (Denmark) was done before and after a liquid meal for 120 minutes. Results: Preprandial normogastria in depressive patients (group II, III) compared to healthy subjects (group K) was lower 79.5±8.1% vs 73.6±8.7% (p<0.01) and 79.5±8.1% vs 68.4±9.9 (p<0.001). The similar differences were recorded during postprandial time. Power ratio scale (PR) was also lower in depressive patients than in healthy subjects: 3.5±0.7 (K), 1.6±0.7 (group II), 1.7±0.8 (group III) – p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively. Conclusions: In depressive patients gastric myoelectrical activity is disturbed and probably causes chronic dyspepsia symptoms.
Wstęp: U chorych z depresją często występują bóle i dyskomfort w nadbrzuszu. Spośród nich wyodrębniono trzy grupy – osoby zdrowe (grupa K, n=30), pacjenci z depresją i dyspepsją (grupa II, n=30), pacjenci z depresją i zakażeniem Helicobacter pylori (grupa III, n=30). U wszystkich oceniono stan emocjonalny z użyciem Skali Depresji Hamiltona, a aktywność mioelektryczną żołądka (Polygraph–Medtronic A/S, Denmark) rejestrowano przez 120 minut przed i po posiłku płynnym. Wyniki: W porównaniu do osób zdrowych (grupa K), u pacjentów z depresją (grupa II i III) odsetek normogastrii przedposiłkowej był niższy; 79,5±8,1% vs 73,6±8,7% (p<0,01) i 79,5±8,1% vs 68,4±9,9 (p<0,001).

Introduction. Every farming method, whether conventional or organic, has been associated with some sort of risky behaviors leading to health issues among farmers. Substantial evidence is not available in the literature to determine whether the magnitudes of health outcomes vary between conventional and organic farmers. The study investigated whether selfreported neurological and mental health symptoms differ between conventional and organic farmers living in Indiana, USA. Materials and method. A self-reported questionnaire survey collected information from 200 conventional and 157 organic farmers of Indiana on demographic characteristics, depression and neurological symptoms. Statistical analyses were conducted to observe the differences in self-reported symptoms by groups of farmers. Results. It was observed that the conventional farmers had significantly higher age-adjusted mean neurological symptom score (p<0.01) than the organic farmers. Regression models revealed positive and significant associations of conventional farming with total (β =1.34; p=0.02), sensory (β =0.83; p=0.001) and behavioural (β =0.09; p=0.03) symptoms after accounting for age, income, education and years in farming. Positive but non-significant associations were also observed in conventional farmers with cognitive and motor symptoms, and with all subscales of depression symptoms in the adjusted models. Conclusion. The findings obtained suggest the importance of a larger study to further explain the difference in mental and neurological health effects in these two categories of farmers.

This article refers to a situation of losing a child in the prenatal period which is a difficult experience affecting numerous families. Need of providing proper and purposeful help encourages a research on multifaceted consequences of this situation in different areas of life. Psychological outcomes usually disclose directly after the moment when the loss occurs and they evolve as the time goes. Proper overcoming of a loss of a child is the best solution for this situation. Unfortunately for many reasons it remains impossible. That is why experienced emotions and pain inevitably become a source of depressive symptoms. Article also concerns family, social and religious dimension of discussed phenomena. The paper presents results of the research on the prevalence of depressive symptoms among women experiencing the loss of a child before birth. The analysis was based on a research conducted on patients (N = 60) of Szpital św. Aleksandra in Kielce. To investigate the prevalence of depression and for the purpose of assessment of the intensity of its components the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used. The results prove the presence of depression symptoms among the participants of the survey. Following highly diagnostic items can be mentioned: sense of guilt, low mood and irritability.

The aim of this article is to investigate the conditions for depression syndromes among junior high school pupils from the Lubuskie and Wielkopolskie Voievodships and to diagnose their emotional condition. The authors refer to T. Parsons’ concept, according to which, health is as an optimal ability to fulfill social roles and expectations imposed by the environment. In this context, puberty and attending junior high school constitute a huge challenge and an experimental field for teenagers, which affects self-assessment of their mental health and emotional condition. Most mental health disorders result from the processes of growing up. The empirical basis for the undertaken considerations are the results of questionnaire surveys conducted in the spring of 2017.
