Opis:
Study was performed in multi−species stand located in the Świętokrzyski National Park (central Poland). Silver fir, Norway spruce and Scots pine trees that grew in a uniform habitat conditions were selected. The trees showed the differences and similarities of changes of the size of radial increment, which result from species−specific sensitivity to selected meteorological elements.

In homogeneous climate conditions Scots pine trees at different sites have similar short−term incremental rhythm. It was determined by the temperature of early spring and precipitation in June. Differences in the growth pattern are caused by various sensitivities of pines from different habitats to the temperature in May and precipitation in February and April of the current year.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to investigate how industrial pollutants and change of thermal conditions of winter season in the second half of the 20th century affected the basal area increment (BAI) and the climatic signal in the BAI chronologies of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus banksiana. Samples were collected from 21 trees of both species growing in the Chrzanów Forest District (50°20' N, 19°47' E) which is located between the Upper Silesian and Krakow Industrial Regions. Two cores were taken from each tree. Tree−ring widths were measured at the cores and the BAI for each year in the period 1930−2016 was calculated. The growth reductions of both pine species in the years 1951−1970, increasing of diversity of growth reactions from year to year and also reduction of strength of climatic signal in the period 1963−1994 may have been caused by industry pollution. The reduction of wood growth, the increase of the diversity of short−term incremental reactions and also the reduction of strength of the climatic signal were greater in Jack pine. This indicates that Scots pine was more resistant to pollution. As an industrial production declined and environmentally friendly technologies were introduced in the 1990s homogeneity of growth reactions and strength of dependence between BAI and climate parameters in both species increased. A significant increase in the strength of the relationship between January temperature and BAI of Scots pine and Jack pine was observed in the early 2000s. This may suggest that the vegetation season starts already in January in the study area.

The paper provides characterisation of meteorological elements that essentially influenced tree−ring width of white willow growing in the riparian community in the Świętokrzyski National Park. Winter frosts, as well as worm, dry autumn, spring and early summer exerted positive effect on the white willow vascular cambium activity in the oncoming growing season. However the annual variation in tree−ring width depended, to the greatest degree, on air temperature in May−June and precipitation in April−July.

Opis:
The introduction of foreign tree species to new areas facilitates an increase in species biodiversity and possibilities for growth of tree stands. Many years of research related to survival rate, basic growth features and evaluation of a sensitivity to climatic conditions of a new habitat is necessary to achieve a successful introduction. The paper presents the results of the research on the adaptation of grand fir to the climatic conditions in the provenance trial located in the lower montane forest belt. The dendroclimatic research has concerned the offsprings of 7 grand fir provenances originated from North America. A total of 24 trees from each provenance were selected and two cores from each tree were taken. Principal component analysis of tree-ring widths was used to classify the provenances. The climate elements described by PC1 and PC2 were identified on the basis of bootstrap correlation function. Survival rate, height and diameter at breast height of trees were also analysed. The features of the studied provenances showed significant differences. The variation of the inter-provenance survival rate and the increase in tree height of particular provenances were determined principally by the genotype. Grand firs trees from Region I exhibited superior survival rates and better dynamic increases in tree height. The variability of these two features had the character of clinal variation because they primarily depended on the elevation and the latitude of the maternal tree stands. Two groups of provenances which were connected with the regions of their natural distribution were characterized on the basis of the features of the short-term rhythm of the radial increments. The provenances of two specific groups revealed different sensitivity to temperature, rainfall, humidity and sunshine. The greatest effect on the variation of radial increments had been produced by the moisture and pluvial factors whilst the solar factor had produced the least effect on it. The air temperature made also a relatively high contribution to their radial increments. Grand fir trees from the Salmon River provenance in British Columbia provided the best trees from the cultivation point of view. The provenances from Vancouver Island and the western slope of the Cascadian Mountains in Washington State have been regarded as the best for introducing and acclimatising to the conditions of the Carpathian Mts.

Opis:
The study analysed the causes of the annual variation of tree−ring widths of silver fir and white fir. The partial populations of both fir species has been growing for over 100 years in Rzepin (western Poland) in a fresh broadleaved forest site. We assumed that the year−to−year changes of the size of radial increment presents sensitivity of trees to local climate factor. The period from 1931 to 2015 was analysed. We found that the silver and white firs had high homogeneity of radial growth responses and sensitivity to year−to−year changes of weather conditions. Warm November of the previous year, short winter and high air temperature in August had positive influence on the size of their radial increment. Moreover, precipitation in February, April and July of the year of tree−ring formation contributed to wider tree−ring. The white fir was highly resistant to winter frost in contrast to the silver fir. In addition, this fir species preferred cold springs. Furthermore, the silver fir suffered from overabundant precipitation in August. The climate conditions of western lowland part of Poland were not a limiting factor for growth of both species because the studied populations achieved the highest site index class.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to i) determine similarities and differences in the increment reaction of silver firs growing at different elevation, ii) identify climatic factors, which caused these response, and iii) determine dendroclimatic zones and identify a site, where a tree grew on the basis of tree−ring widths series. Studied stands were located in the Ustroń Forest District at the elevation of: 500−550 m a.s.l. (foothill zone, 18°59‵ E, 49°43‵ N) and 800−850 m a.s.l. (lower montane forest zone, 18°58‵ E, 49°43‵ N). In each stand 20 dominant firs were selected and one increment core per tree was taken. Tree−ring widths (fig. 1) were transformed into annual sensitivity index (fig. 2). Principal component analysis was used to reduce a number of original variables and classify the tree−ring series. Response function analysis was used to determine climate−radial increment relationships. The standardized series of firs on both sites were different in terms of the climate influence (fig. 3). The analysed trees responded differently to solar and thermal conditions in previous autumn and current summer as well as to pluvial conditions at the beginning of winter and in the second half of summer. The investigated firs had also common increment characteristics. The trees from both sites responded similarly to thermal, solar and pluvial conditions in February, solar and pluvial conditions in May and temperature in winter and summer (fig. 4). Climatic signal of each elevation zone was recorded by each tree and depended on the climatic conditions in given area. On the basis of standardized tree−ring series, dendroclimatic regionalization can be created and the stand, where a tree grew, can be identified.
