This article seeks to show changes in the socio-economic structure of the thirty largest Polish cities, in topological relations, and in the type of socio-economic differences among them. The research was carried out at three analytical levels: of the unitary variables chosen, principal components, and in a synthetic approach (cluster analysis). To assess structural changes, use was made of comparative statics involving an analysis of the 1998 and 2008 situations. The period analysed was one of dynamic changes in the determinants of the socio-economic development of Polish cities, with four reforms of key significance being introduced, not all of them crowned with success, but also a period marking the start of a decline in demographic dynamics and of suburbanisation processes. It is also treated as a time of transition from a quantitative to a qualitative type of urban development, as indicated by improving services in the sphere of municipal infrastructure. Those processes are connected with the restructuring of the economy, in particular with its distinctly post-industrial orientation, which is especially readily visible in the case of the Upper Silesian Industrial District (a mining and heavy-industry region). The research corroborated the highly specific type of development of the towns of this region as well as the unique position of the Polish capital city. It also showed that the changes which determined the tendencies of transformation of the Polish cities were mainly those in demography, housing situation, level of health care, and level of entrepreneurship.

Population aging is a natural social process. Nevertheless the increase in the population of the elderly (including those of an advanced age – above 85 years old) in the last decade in Poland is unusually high. The rapid increase in the number of older people and their percent-age in the total population is associated with specific social and economic consequences. These have to be faced both by the central government as well as local authorities. In the article author concentrated on the question of the knowledge of local authorities about demo-graphic changes and perceptions of their consequences. The aim of the study was to assess the level of knowledge of local government representatives on the ageing of the local community and the interpretation of changes caused by this process. In addition, the author has identified the measures that local governments have declared to undertake to increase awareness of aging and its consequences. In the article the results of a survey conducted in July 2015 in 77 of the 119 non-metropolitan municipalities of Pomeranian province has been used.

W pracy przedstawiono zmiany demograficzne zachodzące na wybranych terenach przemysłowych i poprzemysłowych dużego miasta, jakim jest Wrocław w XXI w. Ponadto w artykule zostały zasygnalizowane towarzyszące tym metamorfozom przemiany badanych terenów przemysłowych i poprzemysłowych: morfologiczno-fizjonomiczne oraz funkcjonalne. Studia opierały się na analizie danych z bazy PESEL, kwerendzie archiwalnej i kartograficznej oraz badaniach terenowych. Badane miejsca w XXI w. uległy istotnym przeobrażeniom, które w znacznej mierze były determinowane procesem deglomeracji działalności przemysłowej z centrów dużych miast oraz chęcią zintensyfikowania użytkowania przestrzeni atrakcyjnie zlokalizowanej wewnątrz tkanki dużego miasta. Największy wpływ na modyfikację badanej przestrzeni miały firmy prowadzące działalność deweloperską oraz usługową.
The paper presents the demographic changes taking place in selected industrial and post-industrial areas of a large city, such as Wrocław, in the 21st century. In addition, the article indicates the accompanying morphological, physiognomic and functional changes in these industrial and post-industrial areas. The research was based on the analysis of data from the PESEL database, archival and cartographic inquiries, as well as field research. In the 21st century, the studied areas have undergone significant transformations which were largely determined by the deglomeration of industrial activity from city centers and the desire to intensify the use of space attractively located within the fabric of a large city. The main forces modifying the studied space were companies conducting development and service activities.

The progressive ageing process concerns both Poland and other Member States of the European Union. In recent years, the share of workers of non-mobile and post-productive age in the total population has been rising, and according to forecasts, in 2035 people aged 45 years and over will represent two-thirds of our society. Since the year 2012, announced the Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations by the European Commission, more and more attention has been paid in the Polish public space to the issues of an ageing society, including its impact on the health of the economy. The article notes that the ageing process does not occur uniformly across all Polish regions, i.e. at the same pace and with the same intensity. The results of studies indicating the regions being most vulnerable to the ageing of the regional community and the negative consequences of this process in the next two decades are presented.

The population ageing is an universal problem concerning all countries in the world, not only in Europe. The main sources of this process are decreasing fertility and increasing life expectancy. The migration has additional impact on ageing in some countries. The ageing of population means many new challenges in the field of economy and society. The quality of life of older people and the entire population as well depends on how countries will meet these challenges and how societies will adapt to the changing demographic conditions. Longer life can mean activity, health and participation, but it depends on properly planned activities in many areas of social and economic life. The phenomenon of ageing and the consequences associated with them are extremely complex and multilateral issues. The presented article focuses on the comparision of the process of ageing in different continents and countries, particularly in Poland. It concerns the problem of the ageing impact on labour market and health care sector as well.

Rodzina jest podstawową komórką społeczną, której celem jest dobro małżonków oraz prokreacja i wychowanie dzieci. W okresie kilkunastu ostatnich lat nastąpiły w Polsce dynamiczne przemiany struktury społeczno-ekonomicznej, które dotknęły również rodzinę i jej społeczne postrzeganie. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie obrazu współczesnej polskiej rodziny w ujęciu statystycznym. Wykorzystano ku temu dane statystyki publicznej oraz jedno z badań CBOS-u. Potwierdza się, że wspomniane przemiany prowadzą raczej do osłabienia rodziny, co z kolei wiąże się z niekorzystną sytuacją demograficzną w Polsce.
The family is the basic social unit of society. The main goal of the family is goal to good of the spouses and the procreation and upbringing of children. Dynamic changes of the socio-economic structure that occurred during the last several years in Poland, affected also the family and its social perception. The aim of the work is the depicting contemporary Polish family in statistical perspective. The statistical data from CSO in Poland and one of the Public Opinion Research Center study were used. It is confirmed that mentioned changes lead to the weakening of the family rather, which in turn is associated with unfavorable demographic situation in Poland.

The decline of students number in Poland affects, on the one hand, the whole higher education system and the situation of individual higher education institutions, but on the other hand, generates a number of economic consequences for academic cities. The study, based on GUS statistical data, presents changes in the number of students in the voivodeships capitals in the period 2006–2015. In the paper attempts were made to determine the economic nature of the consequences resulting from the loss of the number of students in Polish academic cities.
Zmniejszająca się liczba studentów w Polsce wpływa z jednej strony na funkcjonowanie całego systemu szkolnictwa wyższego oraz na sytuację poszczególnych szkół wyższych, z drugiej strony natomiast generuje szereg konsekwencji ekonomicznych dla miast akademickich. W opracowaniu na podstawie danych statystycznych GUS zaprezentowano zmiany w liczebności osób studiujących w wojewódzkich miastach akademickich w okresie 2006–2015 oraz podjęto próbę określenia charakteru ekonomicznych konsekwencji wynikających z ubytku liczby studentów w ośrodkach kształcenia na poziomie wyższym.

Doctors and other representatives of medical professions play a special role in a society, as they are entrusted with people’s health which is one of the greatest goods of a human. Surveys conducted in various systems of healthcare related to the satisfaction of persons with chronic health problems show that the main source of problems is the medical staff rather than the degree of advancement of medical technologies available. Therefore, appropriate – in accordance with the expectations of the society – education of medical staff should constitute a very important element of the health protection system. The Supreme Audit Office, taking the above in consideration, has conducted a coordinated audit of this matter.

Sustainable development assumes improvement in the quality of living of present and future generations by achieving social, economic and environmental balance. Demographic changes play a significant role in this process due to their long-term impact on social and economic outcomes. The population of Poland is relatively young in comparison to other EU members but it is ageing very rapidly. This demographic process raises challenges for social policy, which include changes in the quality of life of the elderly population. The aim of the paper is to compare Polish voivodships (NUTS-2 territorial units) with respect to main features of both the demographic change and of economic situation of population aged 55 and over. We use selected indicators characterizing the demographic situation of the ageing Polish population, as well as the financial and occupational status of the elderly. Based on these indicators, we calculate synthetic measures of development. The results enable us to evaluate the demographic situation of Polish regions as well as distinguish main trends of the changes.

The article deals with quantifying the influence of environmental and socio-economic factors on life expectancy in Poland, that has been increasing since 1992 as a result of falling infant mortality rate, the development of civilisation and improving quality of life, among others. The process brings about changes in the number and demographic structure of the population, one outcome of which is an expanding share of elderly people. The research goal was focused on estimating econometric models that allow understanding how socio-economic factors influence  life expectancy in Poland.
W artykule podjęto próbę kwantyfikacji wpływu czynników środowiskowych oraz społeczno – ekonomicznych na przeciętne trwanie życia. Od 1992 r. obserwuje się intensywność tego zjawiska, będącego skutkiem spadku umieralności niemowląt, jak również postępu cywilizacyjnego i poprawy jakości życia. Zjawisko to wpływa na zmiany w liczbie i strukturze demograficznej ludności, co w konsekwencji prowadzi do przyrostu udziału osób starszych w populacji. W świetle poczynionych spostrzeżeń oszacowano modele makroekonomiczne, które pozwalają zrozumieć mechanizmy wpływu uwarunkowań zewnętrznych na procesy demograficzne.

Celem opracowania jest analiza niektórych zmian demograficznych, jakie nastąpiły w aglomeracji poznańskiej (miasto Poznań i powiat poznański) w latach 1988-2007. Uwaga została skupiona na dynamice zmian w natężeniu wybranych wskaźników demograficznych, ich zróżnicowaniu przestrzennym oraz tendencjach przemian w okresie transformacji społeczno-gospodarczej w ostatnich latach. Szybki rozwój zabudowy jednorodzinnej i niskiej wielorodzinnej, który rozpoczął się w późnych latach dziewięćdziesiątych XX w. powodował bardziej intensywny przypływ rezydentów do aglomeracji poznańskiej, w rezultacie czego obszar ten, a szczególnie jego wiejskie jednostki, zanotowały szybki wzrost liczby ludności.W opracowaniu przedstawiono proces suburbanizacji i jego rezultaty w okresach zmian demograficznych mających miejsce podczas transformacji społeczno-ekonomicznej.
The aim of the paper is to analyse some demographic changes that took place in the Poznań agglomeration (that is, Poznań poviat and Poznań city) over the years 1988-2007. Attention is focused on the dynamics of change in the intensity of selected demographic indices and on their spatial differences in the years 1999 and 2007. The rapid development of single-family and low-rise multi-family housing that started in the late 1990s brought a morę massive inflow of residents to the Poznań poviat area. As a result, the poviat, and especially its rural areas, recorded a fast ratę of population growth. The paper seeks to identify the effects of suburbanisation in terms of demographic changes taking place during the socio-economic transformation of the recent years.

Objective: The purpose of this article is to justify the need for interdisciplinary research on demographic change due to the need to prepare for the challenges arising from many public policies, such as family, labour market, education and social security. The identified challenges and areas imply a broad reflection, which should focus on a holistic approach to active social policy and the labour market. Design/methodology/approach: The theses presented in the article were verified using a: literature review, statistical research and comparative analysis. Findings: The changes, processes and forecasts presented in the article indicate that in order to reduce mismatches in the labour market in Jastrzębie-Zdrój, measures should be taken to build the future shape of urban policies – especially in the phase of aging of the society. Not taking this type of action may delay preparation of Jastrzębie-Zdrój for changes in the age structure of inhabitants, whichseems inevitable. Originality/value: The article enriches knowledge and develops a discussion in the area of dynamically developing demographic changes. Based on the conclusions presented in the article, it seems that the biggest contemporary challenge for the community, institutions and people creating Jastrzębie-Zdrój’s future may be maintaining the longest possible professional activity of the aging population of Jastrzębie-Zdrój while building a modern active social policy and labour market corresponding to the economic structure of cities.

Polskę w kolejnych dekadach czeka proces gwałtownych przemian demograficznych polegający na wzroście udziału seniorów w populacji. W celu utrzymania wzrostu gospodarczego w nowej sytuacji demograficznej zwraca się uwagę na tzw. srebrną gospodarkę, której znaczenie można rozpatrywać zarówno w wymiarze społecznym, jak i ekonomicznym. Ekonomiczne znaczenie koncepcji „srebrnej gospodarki” polega, między innymi, na wskazaniu korzyści wynikających z wykorzystania potencjału popytowego, jaki reprezentuje starsza populacja. Srebrna gospodarka obejmuje szereg segmentów, w tym ubezpieczenia odnoszące się głównie do form ryzyka właściwych starszemu wiekowi. Do tej szerokiej grupy zaliczyć można również prywatne (komercyjne) ubezpieczenia zdrowotne. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przybliżenie roli prywatnych ubezpieczeń zdrowotnych w kontekście zjawiska budowania srebrnej gospodarki w Polsce. W artykule postawiono hipotezę: seniorzy w Polsce mogą stać się istotnymi inwestorami na rynku ubezpieczeń zdrowotnych. Analiza sytuacji finansowej seniorów, obciążenie budżetów wysokimi wydatkami na zdrowie, szczególnie na wyroby farmaceutyczne, pozwalają na przyjęcie założenia, że odpowiednio skonstruowana oferta może spotkać się z zainteresowaniem tej grupy społecznej.
In the coming decades, Poland will be faced with rapid demographic changes related to the rising proportion of the elderly population. Because of the necessity to sustain economic growth in the new demographic situation, more attention is being given to the so-called silver economy, the significance of which can be considered from social and economic perspectives. The economic value of the silver economy concept lies in highlighting the benefits of unleashing the demand latent in the elderly population. The silver economy has many segments, including insurance focused on risks specific to the elderly. This broad category of insurance also contains private (commercial) health insurance. The paper considers the role of private health insurance in terms of silver economy building in Poland. The research hypothesis verified in the study stated that seniors in Poland can become important investors in the health insurance market. The results of an analysis of seniors’ budgets imply, that an appropriately designed offering might attract interest from this social group.
