Opis:
The reality of death, from which the human beings cannot escape, is seen mostly as their biggest enemy. This is also claimed in the Hole Bible (1 Kor 15,26). People try to defeat this enemy. But when they do not manage to do this, they try to forget about it, to throw it out of their consciousness. Then, death is treated as an evil, that is dangerous for human beings. Death can also be a real, tangible evil, when a person inflicts death on other people. Then, the treachery of this kind of death is not only evil against other people (abortion, euthanasia) but mostly evil against God, our Lord Creator. So, can we talk about death as a good thing? Yes, death is the highest good for a person, if they do not reject their relation with God as our Creator and will deepen their relation with Christ as our Redeemer in faith. Then, the people may have hope to fulfil their life in the Holy Spirit, for eternal life in God. The longing of this eternal life had been manifesting itself throughout the history of mankind and reached its reality and apogee in the Occurrence of Christ. This is how the Holy Bible and the christian theology show other aspects of death: Although it is still a biological event itself, death is not a physical defeat, but it is the God’s decision understood as “constant ruining of the old, so that it can be the beginning of something new” (J. Ratzinger). That God’s new act is the birth of new Adam, which is shown by the baptism, and in the future will be fulfilled with the Resurrection.

Death has always been, is and will remain a mystery for man every day, including man biblical times. Bible ratio for both life and death is full of seriousness. At the corners of the Old Testament, in different ways, echoes the truthabout the transience of human life. In this paper it has been discussed biblical picture of death, which occurred as a consequence of the sin of our first parents. The human condition biblical times lived according to the dictates of Yahweh meets in the years to old age and is sometimes bliss. Among sinful men it causes fear and anxiety. Regardless of the human attitudes in relation to the death, one thing is certain - it is the participation of every human being. In addition to discussing the basic biblical terminology relating to the death discussed here also the most common funeral rites, about which the authors say books of the Old Testament. Among these habits highlights the way of relating to corpses and burying them. Here also raised issues funeral rites, the duration of mourn-ing and fasting, mourning and weeping. In the light of Biblical statements of the Old Testament prophets stated here that if the sign of death will be replaced with a peace sign, then death will disappear: "God engulf death forever" (Isaiah 25.8).

Man is the only earthly creature who is aware of himself and of the inevitability of his death. Death, as a mystery and inescapable reality, has always been the subject of reflection and research. Popes have also discussed this issue in their teaching. The aim of the article is to present human attitudes toward death in Gregory the Great’s homilies from the fifth and sixth centuries. A textual analysis of these homilies reveals that man should prepare himself for death in such a way that death arouses not fear, but rather joyful entrustment to God. Gregory’s homilies also convey that the decisions that a person makes throughout his lifetime have a powerful impact on the moment of his death. Pope Gregory demonstrates the interdependence of the free decision that man makes at the moment of death and the gift of eternal life with God. The pope proclaims that if someone lives a sinful life, then evil spirits will fight for his soul at the moment of his death. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to put one’s life in order before death and to be safeguarded by the prayer of the community of the Church at the moment of death.

The article is an attempt to answer the question in what way is Virgin Mary the One who helps humans to accept the reality of death with an open mind and in such a way that makes them grow as well as brings them closer to truth and goodness. This topic seems to be especially relevant in situations in which one tries to escape the very thought of death and at the same time Marian devotion tends to be marginalized. Mary accompanies those who are experiencing their own death or whose loved ones are passing away. Just as she was present at the Golgotha under her Son’s cross, she is present at the end of the earthly life of her adopted children. She protects them from despair, anger and indifference. She helps the witnesses of faith to endure the experience of martyrdom. She encourages sinners to repent. Mary provides comfort in times of spiritual battle. She shows the path of love which retains nothing just for its own sake. She encourages people to support the dying. She invites us to discover the meaning of life and death in Christ. The author tries to reveal various dimensions of the experience of death by combining anthropological and Mariological reflection.

The article describes illness and death behind the walls of the convent of the Norbertine in Ibramowice in light of The Chronicle Sophia Grothówna from the years 1703-1741. Health problems and death in human life are two inevitable events. As a people we know this is unavoidable and we will meet every existence. Sisters of Mary also were afflicted with minor or major health problems. The nuns lived in damp conditions. At the monastery Imbramowice flows flows the river Dłubnia, causing a humid environment. Nuns in Imbramowice had to contend with difficult housing conditions after a fire in 1710. Norbertine's coped with the diseases in various ways:leaving for treatment to spas (with the consent of the bishop and the abbess), or waiting for assistance of a barber, doctors came less frequently. The article contains also diseases to which the sisters suffered. In the second part, the paper describes the death of sisters and everything that is associated with it. Every act of dying featured in the pages of The Chronicle abbes Grothówna was dramatic. After the death of a Norbertine followed by a funeral, if the nun exercised a high function at the monastery burial was very solemn and distinguished guests arrived. The Sisters of Mary also organized refreshments for the poor people, to help the dead and prayed for a specified period of time. The article includes a list of all the sisters residing at the monastery in Imbramowice over the years 1703-1741. The table presents information: date of commencement of the novitiate, professed, perpetual function each nun and date of death.

This article contains reflections on the most important themes of Justyna Bargielska’s lyrics: death, mortality and loss. The peculiar compulsion of creating poems centered around thanatologic motifs stems from the poet’s biographic experience, and her lyrics very often constitutes an expression, subversive and iconoclastic, of the female experiencing mourning. Poetry turns out to be a value contrasted with death, but its effect facilitating reconciliation with the inevitability of the end has a dimension fragmentary, conditional and limited in time, which forces us to take further efforts towards the consciously taken job of “creating against death”.

Although their hybridity can be found at different levels, such as the generic level, or the lexical level, all three texts attempt to catch the Mother in their narrative subterfuges in order to bring her back to life (or in the case of Cixous, to keep her alive), in vain. In the process, the authorial voice is reinforced as the voice leading the reader through narrative transgressions.

The attitude towards death and dying reflects the society’s view on a human being as a subject. Due to the progress in medical science a growing interest has been observed in the problem of death, including the right to dignified dying. One of the issues connected with the phenomenon of dying is the problem of euthanasia seen as one’s right to decide on one’s own death in extreme cases. The question of the legality of euthanasia is becoming a subject of consideration more and more often, which is a result of a celebratory culture of death and the obsolescence of faith and religious practice. The aim of the following report is to show the attitude of major religions of the world towards euthanasia. What arguments of religious nature are against the legality of mercy killing? Both Christian and non-Christian religions rise to speak on the matter. All religions stress their veto over mercy killing, justifying their view in various ways. Christians claim that God is the donor and lord of life; a man cannot decide on ending human life as he or she is only the user, not the owner of it. Judaism assumes that human life has an absolute value, is sacred, untouchable, as God’s gift. Islam, quoting Koran, also preserves life as God’s gift. According to Buddhist ethics, the annihilation of both one’s own and someone else’s life is the worst of evil deeds. Will the arguments of religious nature mean enough to stop the legality of euthanasia?

The paper argues that F. Nietzsche’s magnum opus Thus Spoke Zarathustra can be looked upon as a narrative about the protagonist’s maturation to understand, articulate and accept the thought of the eternal return which is tantamount to accepting the prospect of his own imminent death and the enigma of afterlife. I seek to prove that Zarathustra purposely defers systematic and coherent explanation of his deepest thought, as well as he dismisses its interpretations proposed by his animals, disciples, and by his main enemy – the dwarf. The thought of the eternal return can only be revealed, enacted. For this purpose, Zarathustra must actually die and return and by so doing bestow on the next generations the gift of his secret intuition. It can be argued convincingly that the last two chapters of part IV of Thus Spoke Zarathustra are conceived as a powerful performative reenactment of the thought of the eternal return as a selective force. The force, however, which does not bring a different (resp. “better”, “stronger”…) existence, as Gilles Deleuze would want it, but the very same, identical life.

The scope of the research was limited to the dynamic motifs and therefore involves only the angels who participate in events associated with the time in which a person dies. The first part of the present study provides an overview of the foundational sources of Islam and the second consists of an analysis of the eponymous theme which is featured in them. At the end, an attempt has been made to draw conclusions as far as the conceptual and imagery dimensions of the motif are concerned.

In 1976 Stanisław Hebanowski, a theater director, has staged on the scene of the Wybrzeże Theatre “The Misunderstanding” – a play written in 1943 in occupied France by Albert Camus. This spectacle was significant for Hebanowski, not only be-cause of it`s evaluation, which shows that the weakness of the Camus’ play have been overcome on the scene, what author of the article demonstates. “The Misunderstand-ing” by Hebanowski is also interesting for philosophical thought because of the votes of reviewers of spectacle, circulating around the question about timeliness of the con-sideration about the absurdity of life and death of the individual in the 70s in Poland. Joanna Roś analyzes this comments and draws conclusions from them.

The article focuses on “The Mines of Falun”, a short story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and it specifically undertakes investigating the rhetorical tension between the expressed and the unexpressed. The trigger for the true inception of the plot of the story emerges by dint of the death of Elis Fröbom’s mother; this bereavement precipitates in the hero the development and articulation of self-damning death wish. Such a verbal commitment is at long last contrapuntally mirrored in a life-affirming counter-spell: the confession of his love for lover Ulla. This act of uncasting the previous spell materializes shortly before Elis descends into the innards of a mine only to meet his death there. The tension between verbal expression and silence also constitutes a significant dimension of the chthonic vision of a hero who in turn lends himself exquisitely to interpreting the enigma of the whole story.

Romanticism was an epoch which the problem of death played one of the crucial role in. A vast array of different scientific approaches as well as hermeneutics of Romantic literature seems therefore to be a natural outcome. The following paper – leaving the modern methodologies on the motif of Thanatos in Romanticism aside – is an attempt to look closer at the phenomenon of death and dying from the ever-present perspective of Ars moriendi (The Art of Dying).
