Opis:
This research investigated the effect of different concentrations of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a donor of nitric oxide) on the longevity of cut giant chincherinchee (Ornithogalum saundersiae) inflorescences. Postharvest quality of inflorescences was positively affected by SNP treatment. Application of SNP enhanced the vase-life, final fresh weight and diameter of inflorescences. The best quality inflorescences were obtained when the stems held in 100 µmol SNP. These are the first published results that indicate that nitric oxide positively improved the longevity and quality of cut O. saundersiae inflorescences.

Opis:
Cut rose stems were pretreated for 24 h with various compounds before being stored in Chrysal solution. Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of different concentrations of aluminum sulphate, ethanol and sucrose in preservative solutions and their combination on flower longevity and post-harvest physiological properties of rose (Rosa hybrida L.) cut flowers cultivars ‘Red Sky’ and ‘Blizzard’. The first experiment aimed to determine the optimum concentration of aluminum sulphate used as a biocide (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 g·dm-3), ethanol used as a biocide and anti-ethylene factor (0, 4, 8, 12%) and sucrose used as a source of energy (0, 10, 20, 30 g·dm-3). In the second experiment, the most effective concentrations were cumulated in combinations of pretreatment solutions. Single use of chemicals: 0.5 g·dm-3 aluminum sulphate, 4% ethanol and 20 g·dm-3 sucrose extended the longevity of both cultivars by 17, 18 and 19%, respectively as compared to deionized water. In the second experiment, the preservative solution containing all three chemicals at optimal concentrations extended cut flower longevity by 30% compared to deionized water. ‘Blizzard’ has lost its commercial value by 6.6% of the time earlier than ‘Red Sky’. Generally, using a biocide, anti-ethylene and source of energy in a pretreatment solution can maintain the high quality of the cut rose flowers and their vase life.

Opis:
Floral exchange markets drive steadily growing interest in ornamental plants sold as cut flowers. Unfortunately, vase life of some of these flowers remains unsatisfactory. Their ornamental value depends on their longevity and number of flowers, as well as overall appearance of the stem during its vase life. Our study determined the effects of storage conditions and Floralife flower food on vase life and ornamental value of Crocosmia ×crocosmiiflora ‘Lucifer’. Crocosmia inflorescences can be attractive cut flowers after meeting some basic requirements. Cutting the branched shoots when the first flower in the main inflorescence was fully open, the second was opening and the subsequent buds showed visible color allowed for maintaining their decorative value for an average of 18.8 days, irrespective of storage conditions and flower food. Vase life and ornamental value depend on storage conditions. Keeping the inflorescences in a semi-lit room (16.8 µmol∙m–2∙s–1), at 18–20°C, and relative humidity of 55–60% or in darkness, at 14–16°C, and relative humidity of 60–70% reduced the number of developed flowers, inflorescence weight and the amount of absorbed solution, and also declined inflorescence vase life. Application of Floralife 200 and Floralife 300 flower food increases the vase life by respectively 7.9 and 8.2 days vs. water, and improves the quality of stored inflorescences.
