    The title of this article treats the monastery as a cultural figure. Part of a monastery complex’s overall design plans are sketches of small chambers, corresponding to artistic radio works. In beginning of the article, I sketch out the scope of my research, discuss its main points, and review my basic assumptions in this radio studies topic area, which arose from an examination of artistic radio communication. Following my conviction that this scientific discipline requires a broad interdisciplinary background, the first part of the article consists of research in artistic radio studies and on culture through a newly defined humanities. The second part of the article covers the basic elements that should be included in this sub-discipline. All of these (to the extent possible in the case of this medium) are shown over a long-term horizon; I focus on explaining the following questions and issues: how should we attempt to answer questions about the status of the audience (e.g. whether radio listeners can be seen as a cultural group); what insights can be gained into the development of technology and its influence on artistic radio works, as well as the continuous increase in the potential of the “acoustic kitchen”, which is important for broadcasters. I also try to demonstrate the impact of artistic radio-communications on changes in culture as a whole.

    The article presents a unusual take on the subject of culture not from the point of view its internal, abstract, immeasurable, yet accessible to cognition content, but from the point of view of its vehicles, or artifacts. The author of the text placed language among the most important external manifestations of culture and focused on how the relationship between language and culture works in practice. The article is divided into three parts, each focused on a different aspect of this relationship. The first one presents a series of theories on meaning and the material and immaterial manifestations of culture as discussed in the humanities. The second one is devoted to physical and corporeal meanings of language. The author presents observations in the field of semiotics which were initiated in the classical era and experimentally confirmed in twentieth-century studies. The third part of the article focuses on the issue of meaning as a biological phenomenon. The author deliberates on the meanings in language that stem from the sounds of words, articulation, and their psychological dimension.

    In May 2014 the first ever Gay Pride Parade was held with tremendous success in Cyprus, a society that is still by-and-large very conservative. At the same time, in an adjacent street, the powerhouse that is the Greek Orthodox Church, organised a counter-parade comprising of far-right individuals, nuns and priests which, both in terms of numbers and influence, failed spectacularly. This paradox spurred a wave of analyses and examination of the way in which Cypriot society and culture seem to be changing until today, 7 years later, engaged as it would seem in a queering process, as well as on issues such as gay activism and civil partnership. My article analyses the ways in which the Parade’s expressed queer desire and the participants’ performativity starting in 2014, gesture towards a significant socio-political change in Cyprus. This analysis is largely based on Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of desire as a machine that generates reality, as I approach the Parade’s “queerness” as an expression of Cypriot society’s polyvalent socio-political manifestations which intentionally include the disenfranchised and provide new answers to questions of belonging. It is ultimately argued that, the way in which performative imagination seems to be able to generate reality, gestures towards a better understanding of the weak points of a dominant structure, becoming thus much more influential than the way in which Michel Foucault understands the notion of “power”. In other words, that the participants’ actions, choices and played-out desires lead to a final, dual performance that is the Parade and the counter-parade on the “stage” that is Cyprus. The Parade’s cultural performativity then, can be read as a site of vital performances, a kind of Bakhtinian carnivalesque that can lead to an understanding of a new socio-political identity which entails hope for the future. Thus, the dynamics of non-heteronormative sexual identities in Cyprus and their political potentials are explored vis-à-vis their capacity to interrogate hegemonic discourses, all of which gestures towards the queering of Cypriot culture.

Metamorfozy Owidiusza potraktowane zostały jako tekst-wzorzec, w którym dokonuje się transformacja – proces wcielenia się w zwierzę. Artykuł dotyczy interpretacji fragmentu dzieła poety opowiadającego o historii przemienienia kochanki Zeusa nimfy Io w jałówkę oraz jej prób porozumienia się ze światem ludzi za pomocą pisma. Mit o Io może być zatem traktowany jako opowieść inicjalna powstania pisma (systemu zapisywania znaków), a samo umieszczenie postaci zwierzęcej w centrum opowieści jako początek dyskusji o relacji występującej między tym, co zastane (naturą), a tym, co wytworzone (kulturą).  
    The ratio of human to an animal is one of the most important relationships between nature and culture. The study of this issue can bring a new look on the body, especially the fact that today in the era of already developed animal studies. Ovid’s Metamorphoses were treated as text-pattern, which makes the transformation – the process of incorporation into an animal. The article is about the interpretation of the myth of the transfiguration mistress of Zeus nymph Io into a heifer and her attempts to communicate with the world of people using the letters. The myth of Io can thus be regarded as a story initialized to the creation of writing (the save characters), and the same placing as the animal in the center of the story – as the beginning of a discussion on the relationship occurring between what exists (nature) and what is produced (culture).

    The book “Faces of the Antihero” presents a different vision of antiheroes than is commonly accepted. The aim of the authors of the monograph is to break with the perception of the antihero as a bad and depraved person. Rather, it is a complex, complicated entity. Particularly noteworthy is the theme of comparing an antihero to an ordinary man stripped of heroism.

    The phenomenon of publication, in the same year, of two books having identical titles, is enough to study the theory presented therein. Both books feature the notion of culture, which was broadly elaborated by both authors: Antonina Kłoskowska and Raymond Williams already in their earlier analyses. It turns out, however, that no matter the title of a book interesting to us, culture is tackled differently in both of them. Williams seems to keep using anthropological definition of culture, while Kłoskowska suggests sociological approach. A reflection on culture by the English academic has shaped the character of British cultural studies and their subsequent follow-ups around the world. A question arises, to what extent the sociological approach by Kłoskowska may give impetus to cultural research in Poland, especially when symbolic culture appears beyond the principle of autotelism.

    This article’s aim is to follow new directions in musicology research, that aspire to be interdisciplinary in character and to focus on cultural, analitical and critical approach to music. Almost entirely unknown to Polish readers, this research, defined as “new” musicology, refers to ethnomusicology and sociology of music’s outputs, and tries to apply some of the methods used in those disciplines to analyze classical Western music. Feminist musicology, on which I focus the most, is a still evolving, very popular in the US and at the same time very wide field of study. It’s analyses, although they are sometimes ideological, are one of the most interesting examples of widening the frames of traditional musicology, that are worth knowing. Not assuming to exhaust the topic, I find it crucial to outline the fields of research for this discipline.

    The article presents the sources of communicative models of translation, founded on the results of enthnopsycholinguistic contrastive research conducted by the Department of Psycholinguistics and Communication Theory of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (later: Russian Academy of Sciences). It focuses on the description of the relations within the triads of language-ethnos-culture or language-consciousness-culture. The problems raised by ethnopsycholinguists from the point of view of translation include lacunae and linguistic awareness of the participants of communication, including bilingual communication.
    W artykule zostały przedstawione źródła komunikacyjnych modeli opisów przekładu, ufundowanych na wynikach etnopsycholingwistycznych badań kontrastywnych prowadzonych przez badaczy Zakładu Psycholingwistyki i Teorii Komunikacji Akademii Nauk ZSRR/Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk, skoncentrowanych na opisie relacji w obrębie triad język – etnos - kultura / język – świadomość - kultura. Za szczególnie istotne z punktu widzenia opisu przekładu problemy, poruszane przez etnopsycholingwistów, uważa się m.in. lakunarność oraz świadomość językową uczestników komunikacji, w tym przede wszystkim komunikacji dwujęzycznej.

    The article examines the concept of memory studies, which is a separate discipline that studies and analyzes memory issues. The phenomenon of memory is an important part of life, although not presented as a necessary condition of mental activity. Memory, the author notes, is a way for people to construct their past through books, movies, documents, ceremonies, and so on. In memory studies, memory arises in various aspects – collective, social, cultural, genetic, and historical. The reason for claiming a worldwide "memory age" is criticism of official versions of history, the return of memory to communities and peoples whose history has been ignored, the activation of various memorial events, and more. It is shown that a social and cultural construct collective memory retains the authentic past as its version and serves as a means to achieve certain goals. Collective memory is in constant change, which is nonlinear, irrational, and not always subject to logical analysis. New events and ideas affect the perception of the past, and patterns of interpretation of the past determine the understanding of the present. The relation between collective and individual memory appears as the relation between memory and history. The primary function of historical memory is to form an identity. The development of memory studies distinguishes the political, functional, cumulative memory that use the past to shape national identity. The context of historical memory includes the concepts of "oblivion", "custom" and "tradition" that help to identify the turning points of history as they are indicators of the emergence of a new society. Historical memory is a tool for using the past to achieve goals dictated by the current situation. Mobilizing memory and collective perceptions of the past has been an integral part of the political process in recent centuries.
    У статті досліджується поняття memory studies в якості окремої дисципліни, в якій вивчається й аналізується проблематика пам’яті. Феномен пам’яті складає важливу частину життя людини, хоча і не є необхідною умовою розумової діяльності. Пам’ять, зазначає автор, це спосіб конструювання людьми свого минулого через книги, фільми, документи, церемонії тощо. В memory studies пам’ять вивчається в різних аспектах – колективна, соціальна, культурна, генетична, історична пам’ять. Ствердження всесвітньої «епохи пам’яті» обумовлено критикою офіційних версій історії, поверненням пам’яті спільнотам і народам, чиє минуле ігнорувалося, активізацією різних меморіальних заходів. Показано, що в якості соціально-культурного конструкту колективна пам’ять зберігає аутентичне минуле в якості його версії і слугує засобом досягнення певних цілей. Колективна пам’ять перебуває в постійних змінах, які нелінійні, ірраціональні і не завжди підлягають логічному аналізу. Нові події та ідеї впливають на сприйняття минулого, а схеми інтерпретації минулого визначають розуміння теперішнього. Співвідношення колективної та індивідуальної пам’яті постає як співвідношення пам’яті та історії. Основна функція історичної пам’яті полягає у формуванні ідентичності. Розвиток memory studies виокремлює політичну, функціональну, накопичувальну пам’ять, які використовують минуле для формування національної ідентичності. В контекст історичної пам’яті включені поняття «забуття», «звичаю» і «традиції». Вони допомагають виявити переломні моменти історії, котрі є індикаторами становлення нового суспільства. Історична пам’ять є інструментом використання минулого для досягнення цілей, що диктуються сучасною ситуацією. Мобілізація пам’яті і колективних уявлень про минуле є невід’ємною частиною політичного процесу впродовж останніх століть.

This article discusses the old traditions and new initiatives of the Institute and its partners from Poland and the Ukraine in the study, dissemination and support of the Ukrainian language, literature, culture in Ukraine and abroad.

    How to translate culturally infused words is indeed the question that becomes more complicated as the cultural turn in Translation Studies (TS) takes place. The task for translators has become not only to make a linguistic transfer but a cultural one as well. In this essay I shall discuss how to deal with some Portuguese words that may be regarded as crucial to defining Portuguese culture. I will focus on words and terms that ask for an understanding and reception mainly at the cultural level. One should keep in mind that knowledge is the key here, as it will be necessary to know something about both source and target culture to find out not only the best solution in translation for these words, but to understand them as well. I will study the process of translation as a process of making certain decisions. I will try to show not only that direct translation is complex, but also that the way we translate those words also differs between a historical book and a comedy film, between a poem translation and a juvenile book translation, etc. As a methodology I shall study this cultureoriented translatological phenomenon under the dominant in translations (as defined by Anna Bednarczyk), the elements that determine translation (loosely based on Werner Koller’s ideas), and the great classic Jiří Levý and his vision of translation as a process of making decisions. I will present different paradigms in order to work out the possible solutions.
    Sposób tłumaczenia słów nacechowanych kulturowo jest zadaniem, które skomplikowało się wraz z tzw. zwrotem kulturowym w translatoryce. Wraz z nim zadanie tłumaczy wykroczyło poza transfer językowy, obejmując również transfer kulturowy. W tym eseju skupię się na strategiach przekładoznawczych, które można zastosować dla wybranych portugalskich słów, kluczowych dla zdefiniowania portugalskiej kultury. Będą to słowa i terminy, które wymagają zrozumienia i recepcji przede wszystkim na poziomie kulturowym. Bez posiadania wiedzy o realiach portugalskich, która jest w tym wypadku kluczem do translatorskiego sukcesu, niemożliwe będzie zrozumienie, a co za tym idzie i przełożenie danych słów i terminów. Postaram się prześledzić proces przekładu jako proces podejmowania decyzji. Postaram się również wykazać, że nie tylko bezpośrednie tłumaczenie jest procesem złożonym, ale konkretne wybory są również determinowane przez gatunkową przynależność danego tekstu. Metodologicznie odwołam się do konceptu dominanty (w ujęciu Anny Bednarczyk), do czynników determinujących przekład (swobodnie opierając się na pomysłach Wernera Kollera) oraz do klasycznego modelu przekładu jako procesu podejmowania decyzji (Jiří Levý). W tym duchu zaprezentowane zostaną paradygmaty celem wypracowania możliwych rozwiązań translatologicznych.

    Opis:
    The distinction between philosophy of the object and of the subject is deeply rooted in our culture. Many consequences, including cultural ones, follow from it. Among them is also a change regarding the ways of how the works of art are made and received and also regarding the criterion of art. One instance of this phenomenon is the so called ‘performative turn’. The distinction between theatre of the object and of the subject (which parallels the philosophical distinction) propounded by the main claim of this paper is intended to facilitate understanding of the essence of the change which accompanied the development of the art of performance. The art of the object is represented, to my mind, by the theater; the art of the subject – by the artistic performance. The criterion, in a manner similar to the case of philosophy, is the conviction (or belief) of the creators (as well as of the audience) of the primacy of the subject over the object, of human ability to create an autonomous reality, of human decisiveness regarding the fact of its existence. The conclusion of the presented investigations concerns the character of theatre: the theatre is in its essence performative, however not in the sense attributed to it by contemporary representatives of performance studies. Rather it is so in the sense of how the very nature of reality determines the relation between the subject and the object, human being and the world.

    Opis:
    The review is an attempt at defining the genre of Krzysztof Andrzej Jeżewski's book Cyprian Norwid a myśl i poetyka Kraju Środka (Cyprian Norwid versus the thought and poetics of China). By referring to the disproportions between Norwidian and oriental contexts, as well as to numerous loose reflections, apparently reminding scientific conclusions, the text goes towards the ultimate suggestion to understand the work as an essay – in its first part, and as a collection of interpretative impressions – in the second one. Special attention is paid to those issues that in Norwid's work probably come from other sources (e.g. patristic), and are shown as ones taken from, or at least compatible with the spirit of Orient.
