    The subject of the article are images of death and human corps in the Ukrainian contemporary art as exemplifi ed by two Ukrainian representatives of contemporary art: Vasily Cagolov and Arsen Savadov. Savadov uses a dead body as a metaphor of a political and social situation. Vasyl Cagolow analyzes the subject of death and violence in popular culture, presenting it as a show that is kitsch and detached from reality.

    W niniejszym artykule współczesna polska wieś definiowana jest jako szczególny rodzaj pogranicza kulturowego istniejącego w konkretnej przestrzeni geograficznej (terytorialnej) oraz wirtualnej. Sąsiedztwo pozostających w kontakcie kultur sprzyja wartościowaniu i nieustannym wyborom, a czynnikiem decydującym o zapożyczaniu danego elementu jest wrodzona moc języka i większa atrakcyjność „innej” kultury.
    In this article the contemporary Polish village is defined as a specific kind of cultural border existing in a particular geographical (territorial) and virtual space. Neighbourhoods of interacting cultures facilitate valuation and constant choices, and the factor that determines borrowing a given element is the natural power of language and greater attractiveness of a “different” culture.

    For millennia, philosophers have pondered the question, “Who are we?” It becomes a burning question at an age of scientific and technological civilization and a world full of conveniences, mainly because human life is still not comfortable. Adam Hart takes up the challenge of confronting the evolutionary achievements of the Homo species and the environment it has produced, showing that our life—for fundamental reasons—cannot be the realization of idyllic visions.

    Opis:
    This article concerns uncertainty, which is considered by many social theorists (for instance, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Daniel Bell, Eric Hobsbawm) to be a characteristic trait of the contemporary world. Uncertainty is produced by rapid, multidimensional changes in the conditions around us—by their instability and unpredictability—and by a lack of future vision. Continual change becomes an element of everyday life. Culture understood as a collection of permanent meanings, norms, and values loses its ordering function—it no longer serves to elucidate the world; the past does not provide helpful examples. There is an expansion of mutability, a multiplicity of possible choices, and an excess of information—which paradoxically, like its lack in an isolated society, is a cause of uncertainty, fear, and presentist thinking. In Polish society, these phenomena are strengthened by tradition and the sense of economic insecurity accompanying the systemic transformation.

    Интересное, хотя и мало оптимистичное решение касающееся м.др. современного человека предложила в очерке «Кризис культуры» Ханна Арендт. Автор, описывая современную массовую культуру и массовое общество отнеслась к картине современного филистра, т.е. человека без совести, человека невежды, озабоченного только на себя – можно бы сказать человека-филистра, являющегося квинтэссенцией современной, широкопонимаемой культуры, в том числе и воспитания, политики. Именно этот короткий очерк стал дополнительным материалом для рассуждений о современном человеке в контексте культуры, воспитания и политики. Однако для того, чтобы отважиться представить ответ, является ли филистерство искушением или угрозой для человека, стоит задать вопрос, кто этот филистер?
    Hannah Arendt in her essay “The Crisis of Culture” suggested an interesting, though none too optimistic solution, concerning contemporary man. The author, describing contemporary mass culture and mass society, referred to the image of a contemporary philistine, i.e. a man without scruples, an ignorant man who is self-centred, one could say a philistine man being a quintessence of the contemporary, broadly understood culture, including education and politics. It was this short essay that became an important contribution to the considerations concerning contemporary man – in the cultural, educational or political contexts. However, before making an attempt to give the answer whether philistinism is a temptation or threat, it is worth asking a question who this philistine is?

    The author presents the socio-cultural framework of the process of formulating and implementing public policies/activities (including their analysis and evaluation). He gives grounds for the idea that socio-cultural factors have a deciding influence on the present low level of effectiveness of public activities/policies in Poland (although structural and economic factors also have an impact). Reference to the phenomenon of a ‘sociological vacuum’ and its consequences (such as minute interest in public issues, and lack of responsibility for public activities and for meeting the needs of others) is important in the analysis. The author points to the historical origins of the phenomenon and refers to earlier studies. He claims this vacuum is responsible for the clumsiness characterizing present attempts to deal with various collective problems—particularly the more complicated ones, whose resolution would require considerable social capital, analytical capacity, and the connection of social and economic resources. In his opinion, public politics in Poland could remain for a long time in its present shape—characterized by the creation of legal regulations without much use of analytics, and by unilateral actions of the political class and the strongest interest groups.

    The article is a reflection on the symbols through which the modern experience of cultural belonging is expressed and on the motivations behind their contestation. Examples of selected themes that Marcin Świetlicki and Barbara Gruszka-Zych explore in their writing are used to examine the poetic quest to overcome feelings of alienation in one’s own cultural milieu. In spite of the differences between the two poets, both address the problems facing the contemporary consciousness of Western man, split between the desire to complete the process of deconstructing his own universal “identifying signs” and the need to creatively explore the process of symbolization itself. The issue of “internal acculturation,” as a particular case within the topic of acculturation as a whole, is also correlated to examples drawn from Francophone poetry.

    Since most pressing today on a global scale is to be able to unite religion, philosophy, and science into parts of a coherent civilizational whole, and since the ability to unite a multitude into parts of a coherent whole essentially requires understanding the natures of the things and the way they can or cannot be essentially related, this paper chiefly considers precisely why the modern world has been unable to effect this union. In so doing, it argues that the chief cause of this inability to unite these cultural natures has been because the contemporary world, and the West especially, has lost its understanding of philosophy and science and has intentionally divorced from essential connection to wisdom. Finally, it proposes a common sense way properly to understand these natures, reunite them to wisdom, and revive Western and global civilization.
