Opis:
Duplex Stainless Steels (DSS) and Super Duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) have excellent integration of mechanical and corrosion properties. However, the formation of intermetallic phases is a major problem in their usage. The mechanical and corrosion properties are deteriorated due to the presence of intermetallic phases. These phases are induced during welding, prolonged exposure to high temperatures, and improper heat treatments. The main emphasis of this review article is on intermetallic phases and their effects on corrosion and mechanical properties. First the effect of various alloying elements on DSS and SDSS has been discussed followed by formation of various intermetallic phases. The intermetallic phases affect impact toughness and corrosion resistance significantly. Their deleterious effect on weldments has also been reviewed.

Using the pad welding technique it is possible to regenerate machine parts or improve surface properties such as abrasion, corrosion and aging resistance. To ensure optimum processing conditions and economic efforts should be made, while providing a high deposition efficiency for the small amount of metal in the pad weld substrate. The pad welding process for the test subject should be carried out by preheating to evaporate the moisture and reduce the porosity of the weld. This treatment is required depending on the carbon equivalent. The article presents the results of corrosion tests of multi-groove pads made with the MIG method on a steel substrate. The samples were made of C45E steel. The additional material was a wire made of stainless steel with the factory name CASTOMAG 4554S. The results of previously performed tests allowed determining the optimal process parameters at which we obtain the smallest share of the base material in the padding. Steel samples were prepared and preheated to 300ºC. The hardfacing process was carried out with constant parameters, i.e. current intensity, arc voltage, surfacing speed). Two protective gases were used to apply the additional material: CO2 and argon. The samples were subjected to corrosion tests in two environments (3.5% sodium chloride solution and 0.001 sulfuric acid solution). The assessment of corrosive properties was made on the basis of constant current measurements (potentiodynamic method). The influence of shielding gas on corrosion properties was demonstrated based on the tests.

Opis:
SO3-Ph-BTBP is a hydrophilic tetra-N-dentate ligand proposed for An(III)/Ln(III) separation by solvent extraction, and a candidate for use in future advanced reprocessing schemes such as GANEX and SANEX. We present the first study of the effect of SO3-Ph-BTBP on the corrosion behavior of stainless steels. Specifically, studies have been performed using steels and conditions equivalent to those found in relevant nuclear reprocessing flow sheets. SO3-Ph-BTBP has been shown to have little effect on either steel passivation or reductive dissolution. However, if driven cathodically into a region of hydrogen evolution at the electrode surface or conversely anodically into a region of transpassive dissolution, observed currents are reduced in the presence of SO3-Ph-BTBP, suggesting corrosion inhibition of the steel potentially through weak absorption of a SO3-Ph- -BTBP layer at the metal-solution interface. The lack of any observed corrosion acceleration via complexation of Fe3+ is surprising and has been suggested to be due to the slow extraction kinetics of SO3-Ph-BTBP as a result of a requirement for a trans- to cis-conformational change before binding.

The paper describes the process of stress corrosion in a Ø50 mm rod made of AISI 304L austenitic chromium-nickel steel. Discs cut off from the steel rod were moved at a speed of 1.25 m/s for a test period of 408 h in a corrosive environment of aqueous solution containing 3% HCl and 8.6 g NaCl at room temperature. It was found that deepest cracks and irregular pitting occurred locally in areas of microstructure containing grains of hard lamellar &alpha' martensite and along boundaries between filamentary delta ferrite (Feδ) precipitates and &alpha′ phase. The corrosion developed in a trans-crystalline manner with branches propagating along boundaries of lamellar &alpha′ phase grains.

Opis:
Martensitic stainless steels are used in a large number of various industrial applications, e.g. molds for plastic injections and glass moldings, automotive components, cutting tools, surgical and dental instruments. The improvement of their tribological and corrosion properties is a problem of high interest especially in medical applications, where patient safety becomes a priority. The paper covers findings from plasma nitrided AISI 440B (PN-EN or DIN X90CrMoV18) stainless steel corrosion resistance studies. Conventionally heat treated and plasma nitrided in N2:H2 reaction gas mixture (50:50, 65:35 and 80:20, respectively) in two different temperature ranges (380 or 450°C) specimens groups were examined. Microscopic observations and electrochemical corrosion tests were performed using a variety of analytical techniques. As obtained findings show, plasma nitriding of AISI 440B stainless steel, regardless of the process temperature, results in reduction of corrosion current density. Nevertheless, applying thermo-chemical process which requires exceeding temperature of about 400°C is not recommended due to increased risk of steel sensitization to intergranular and stress corrosion. According to the results, material ion nitrided in 450°C underwent leaching corrosion processes, which led to significant disproportion in chemical composition of the corroded and corrosion-free areas. The authors suggest further research into corrosion process of plasma nitrided materials and its degradation products.

Opis:
The development of modern invasive surgery is highly dependent on the performance of surgical instruments, understood as long-term efficiency arising from high resistance to wear and corrosion. In order to maintain sufficient reliability, surgical cutting instruments are often made of martensitic stainless steels. Nevertheless, the use of ferrous alloys in medical applications is still a concern due to their questionable corrosion and wear resistance. To extend their bioconipatibility, improve stability in variable environmental conditions, improve ease of handling, and maximize their performance, diffusion layers and coatings are applied to the surface. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of TiN and diamond-like carbon (DLC) surface modification on the performance of surgical drill bits, that is. wear and corrosion resistance, measured in model and field tests. Based on the findings presented, DLC layers can be recommended as anti-wear and anti-corrosion coatings for surgical drill bits.

Opis:
Reliability and durability assurance poses a serious challenge for surgical instruments manufacturers. Hard working conditions, such as intermittent contact with body fluids and hard bone tissues, as well as necessity to undergo frequent sterilisation processes, induce constant research into solutions capable of ensuring high wear resistance while maintaining satisfactory imperviousness to corrosion. Plasma nitriding is marked as the modern corrosion resistance improving method suitable for surgical instruments steels. The paper pre-sents findings from the heat treated and plasma nitrided AISI 440B (PN EN or DIN X90CrMoV18) steel corrosion resistance studies. Three conventionally heat treated (quenched with tempering in 250, 390 or 605°C) and three additionally plasma nitrided in N2:H2 reaction gas mixture (50:50, 35:65 and 20:80 ratio, respectively) specimens groups were examined. Furthermore, the authors evaluated the effect of machining - polishing and sandblasting - on investigated steel corrosion resistance. Microscopic observations and electrochemical corrosion tests were performed using a variety of analytical techniques. Results showed that, in comparison to conventional heat treatment, plasma nitriding of 440B stainless steel does not significantly affect its corrosive characteristics as far as the uniform nitride layer over the entire detail surface is obtained. The layer heterogeneity results in intensification of corrosion processes, making the material even more susceptible to corrosion than after conventional heat treatment, and contributing to severe, visible even with the unaided eye damages development.

Corrosion is a global menace which has imparted the world economy greatly. One of the solutions proffered to these challenges is the use of inhibitors. Several natural inhibitors have been used to protect engineering materials from corroding. This research is focused on investigating the inhibitive properties of Hura crepitans seed (HCS) on Duplex Stainless Steel 2101 (DSS2101) in H2SO4. The selected plant part was subjected to characterization to determine the presence of organic anti-corrosion agents present. From the result, phytochemicals such as saponin, tannins, steroid and flavonoids were observed. The presence of the organic group accounted for the inhibitive efficiency recorded in the environment. The polarization studies revealed that generally the inhibitor produced from seed extract of Hura crepitans, improved the corrosion resistance of DSS2101 in 0.5M H2SO4. The optimum corrosion inhibitor efficiency was observed at 0.2% inhibitors in 0.5M H2SO4 for 2101DSS.

Now, the use of any medical device based on metals or alloys, especially intended for dentistry applications, is impossible without preclinical evaluation of its anticorrosion properties. Today, the use of stainless steels with AISI standardization, with predilection 316L and 321, are preferred for ergonomic reasons due to their high operational reliability and optimal mechanical properties for functionality over time. In this regard, 316L and 321 stainless steels are tested for comparison in the solution that simulates human saliva with different pH. Stainless steel samples were subjected to corrosion in Fusayama-Meyer and Carter-Brugirard saliva. In-situ electrochemical measurements were applied, such as the open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results show that the corrosion resistance of 316L is superior to 321 in saliva solution at both pH values.

A number of factors determine the mechanical, but also physical and chemical properties. One of the most important are the steel microstructure and its working conditions. A few corrosion processes in crevices and awkward corners can be avoided at the design stage (low roughness parameters, roundsection and other). But still the construction material is exposed to corrosion. These steels often come into contact with an aggressive environment based on nitric acid. Stainless steel is more and more often used in many sectors of industry. The purpose of this article is to investigate corrosion resistance in different time (48, 96, 144, 192, 240, 288, 336, 384 and 432 hours) using weight loss and profile roughness parameters of martensitic steel in grade X55CrMo14 in nitric acid 65% pure-basic at temperature 348 K. Corrosion tests show that the tested steel in nitric acid as a corrosive environments is characterized through continuous corrosion process whose measure may be surface roughness.

The effect of aging time at 850°C for 300 s, 600 s, 1800 s, and 84600 s on the microstructural evolution and corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) was studied after cold rolling up to 60% of reduction. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy were used for microstructural characterization. The corrosion behavior was studied by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) and electrochemical impedance technique (EIS) in 3.5% NaCl solution and the susceptibility to sensitization was investigated through the double loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (DL-EPR) test in 0.5 M H2SO4 + 0.1 M NaCl + 0.002 M KSCN solution. After cold working, increasing aging time led to an increase in sigma phase precipitation and a decrease in pitting corrosion resistance. However, the ultrafine microstructure had a beneficial influence on the self-healing effect in Cr and Mo depleted areas with the increasing of aging time, resulting in higher passivation ability. The DSS 2205 type was not susceptible to intergranular corrosion for the aged conditions applied.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of plastic deformation on the electrochemical properties of X5CrNi18-10 steel. The tested material belongs to the group of stainless steels with low carbon content, and it is used in many industries due to its high corrosion resistance. In most applications of the tested material, it is formed into complicated shapes and exposed to aggressive environments. Examples include the applications in medicine (implants) as well as in civil engineering and nuclear power plants. Different effects of deformation on anti-corrosion properties have been described in the literature. Samples with 5 different deformations were obtained in the present experiment. Electrochemical direct electrical current and alternating electrical current tests were performed for the obtained materials. The tests were carried out in a 1 molar sodium chloride solution. The study revealed an increase in the corrosion resistance of samples with increasing strain in the tested strain ranges.

Opis:
The stainless steels are used to build parts of machinery for agriculture. These components should have adequate corrosion resistance because they contact with aggressive environments, such as natural and artificial fertilizers, or e.g. during the biogas production. In such environments austenitic AISI 304L (EN 1.4301) and AISI 316L (EN 1.4571) stainless steels are mostly used. In the available literature authors found no information on the corrosion potentiodynamic tests in manure. That was the reason to undertake the studies on one of the austenitic stainless steels to perform corrosion tests in the environment of animal slurry. The article presents the analysis of general and pitting corrosion of AISI 304L (EN 1.4307) steel in the environment which is the cattle slurry. Potentiodynamic measurements were made on the potentiostat ATLAS 98 with a scan rate of 0.1 mV∙s-1 in the anodic direction and with scan rate of 1 mV∙s-1 in the return cathodic direction. The measurement was started in the anodic direction from potential of minus 600 mV against the saturated calomel electrode (SCE) to achieve a current density of 1000 μA∙cm-2. After that the cathodic scan was done back to the potential of -600 mV vs. SCE. The general corrosion in animal slurry is higher than in 3% water solution of sodium chloride. The corrosion potential measured in the animal slurry was equal to -525 mV vs. SCE. That clearly indicates a higher tendency to general corrosion in comparison with the results obtained in 3% sodium chloride solution (-200 mV vs. SCE). The passive current density ratio measured in the animal slurry to that one in 3% NaCl aqueous solution is equal approximately 8.5.
