Opis:
Migration has been a topical phenomenon for centuries, which explains why the discourse on migration has been analysed under various perspectives, including linguistic ones. The present paper intends to settle in this field, conducting an interlinguistic discourse analysis which takes into consideration the Italian, German and Danish online language. We asked ourselves what the most used terms to name people involved in migration were, how they were translated in the most important dictionaries of the considered languages, and whether we presuppose or assume the same, while using these terms in the different languages. To answer these questions, the TenTen-Family corpora available on Sketch Engine were used. After looking at the most important German words to name people who set off to move in another country and their Italian and Danish equivalents proposed by dictionaries, we decided to focus on “Einwanderer”, “Flüchtling” and “Migrant”: after a first quantitative comparison between the German, Italian and Danish equivalents based on their relative frequency, a qualitative interlinguistic analysis of their collocations and metaphors was carried out using a number of tools available on Sketch Engine, with the aim of highlighting general tendencies. The results proved that the equivalents provided by dictionaries show in fact a high degree of complexity in their use in the online discourse: not only do they not always appear in the same contexts (see collocations), but they often do not share the same metaphors. This paper paths the way for further linguistic studies in this field, but it could also prove useful for translators dealing with online language in German, Italian and Danish.

Opis:
This paper has a dual purpose: it both seeks to introduce the other works in this issue by illustrating how they are related to the field of argumentation as a whole, and to make clear the tremendous range of research currently being carried out by argumentation theorists which is concerned with the interaction and inter-reliance of language and argument. After a brief introduction to the development of the field of argumentation, as many as eight language-based approaches to the study of argument are identified, taking as their perspective: rhetoric, argument structure, argument as act, discourse analysis, corpus methods, emotive argument, and narrative argument. The conclusion makes it clear that these branches of study are all themselves interconnected and that it is the fusion of methodologies and theory from linguistics and the philosophical study of argument which lends this area of research its dynamism.

Opis:
This study investigates recurrent language resources employed in corporate blogs to connect with readers and (to a lesser extent) express authorial positions. It is based on the premise that constructing identity and enhancing image underpins most, if not all, corporate discourse and blogs are no exception. Based on a corpus of 500 different posts (totalling 318,296 words) from the Business Process Outsourcing and Information Technology sectors, we use standard Corpus Linguistics (Partington et al. 2013) techniques (keywords, cluster analysis, concordancing) to identify linguistic features associated with the expression of engagement: reader pronouns and their co-occurrence with selected modal verbs, questions, adverbs marking shared knowledge and directives. These are then interpreted in in terms of a model of textual interactions proposed in Hyland (2005). We argue that the communication found in this relatively new and underresearched genre is essentially effected one-way establishing a pseudo-dialogue, with virtually no or very low level of interactivity between blog writers and blog readers.

Opis:
Focusing on the exploration of intra-disciplinary register variation in the pharmaceutical domain, this corpus-driven study attempts to describe the use, composition and discourse functions of phrase frames, that is, contiguous sequences of words identical except for one (Fletcher, 2002-2007), found in samples of four English pharmaceutical text types, such as patient information leaflets, summaries of product characteristics, clinical trial protocols and chapters/sections from academic textbooks on pharmacology. The study deals with a specific sub-type of phrase frames, that is, 4-word units with a variable slot in the medial position, e.g. be * with caution, to take * medicine. The results showed, among others, that the use and discourse functions of phrase frames vary across pharmaceutical text types, that the correlation between the frequency of phrase frames and their pattern variability may depend on a register or genre, and that it is justified to treat the discourse functions of phrase frames as distinct from those of their textual variants.

Opis:
This paper examines how the Front National’s electoral victories could be explained, partially, in terms of a new discursive rhetoric adopted by Marine Le Pen. In order to compare rhetorical strategies used by both Marine and Jean-Marie Le Pen and their impact on their followers, we use comparable data, which consist of press articles published during the presidential campaigns of each politician and postings by online discussants related to interviews. Using corpus linguistics tools and lexical semantics, we assess how differently both leaders position themselves emotionally and how this emotional positioning is reconstructed within the postings of the viewers. Although no important quantitative difference can be observed in the number of emotion key-words they used respectively, a shift in both politicians’ rhetoric positioning can be observed when analyzing the context in which these keywords are embedded. If Jean-Marie Le Pen focuses on negative feelings towards the Other (anger, resentment), Marine Le Pen promotes a positive ethos (empathy) in order to detoxify the image of her party and broaden her electoral base.

The paper aims at describing the discourse of the Polish Catholic Church upon family. The perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis is adapted and chosen categories suggested by van Leeuwen (2008) are used. The study is conducted on corpus (241-thousand words) of official documents published on website of Polish Bishop’s Conference. Qualitative and quantitative methods are used. The analysis reveals three discursive ways of constructing of the family: family as a part of church’s community, family as week, endangered and needing protection and strong connection between family and national identity.

This article attempts to demonstrate different perspectives on investigating legal terminology by focusing on various types of textual recurrence. It discusses the results of a corpus-based and corpus-driven analysis of discovery, a term central to the US trial practice and criminal proceedings. The analysis starts from investigating traditional collocational patterns, both nominal and verbal. It describes meanings resulting from the emerging co-occurrence patterns between the term and various word forms identified in its co-text. Then the paper proceeds to explore computer-generated clusters formed around discovery. Finally, this article refers to the concepts of semantic preference and semantic sequence (Hunston 2008) to show how discovery tends to be found with a range of different word forms albeit all belonging to the meaning group of’ limitation’ or ‘restriction’. The connotational value of the term is presented by providing some textual evidence of discovery found in co-texts where  writers express their unfavourable evaluation towards this legal concept. By drawing on Hunston’s (2008)  concept of semantic sequence, the analysis illustrates how corpus linguistics can complement more traditional approaches to terminology description. It is argued that only by combining various approaches  to  the study of word combinations is it possible to gain important insights  into the phraseological behavior  of legal terms.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie korzyści i zagrożeń wynikających z implementacji komputerowego językoznawstwa korpusowego do analizy dyskursu. Autorzy opisują genezę i rozwój narzędzi do przetwarzaniu języka naturalnego (z ang. Natural Language Processing, NLP) w ujęciu historycznym oraz prezentują przykłady ich zastosowania w obszarze nauk społecznych, w szczególności w metodologii nauk o komunikacji społecznej i mediach. Praktyczne ujęcie tematu obrazują fragmentaryczne wyniki badań zrealizowanych w Instytucie Dziennikarstwa, Mediów i Komunikacji Społecznej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego we współpracy z konsorcjum CLARIN-PL.
The aim of this paper is to present the benefits and risks of implementing corpus linguistics for discourse analysis. The authors describe the origins and development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools in a historical perspective and provide examples of their application in social sciences, particularly in the methodology of Social Communication and Media Sciences. Fragmentary findings of studies carried out at the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication at the Jagiellonian University in collaboration with the CLARIN-PL consortium illustrate a practical approach to the topic. The article presents the application of NLP tools in the analysis of the corpus of parliamentary discourse from 1989-2019 in terms of determinants for the institutionalization of civic dialogue in Poland and also in the comparative analysis of multiculturalism in the city council discourse and media discourse in Krakow between 2014–2018 (7th term of the Krakow City Council). The authors indicate in which phase and at which stage of communication research the use of computational linguistics can support the conclusion.
