The research described in the article is based on the assumption that support is a function of internal dialogs, but their role in a stressful situation is not known. The subject of the research is dialogs with imaginary interlocutors and their role in coping in stressful situations. The participants in the study (N = 73) were asked to imagine a difficult situation. Then, the experimental group (N = 36) conducted an imaginary dialog with a person from the previously created map of support. The control group (N = 37) generated a list of possible solutions to a difficult situation. The study measured the quality of support obtained as a result of the dialog or as a result of making a list of solutions. The results show that a dialog with an imaginary interlocutor is a more effective form of coping with a stressful situation than generating a list of possible solutions to the problem.

В статье обсуждаются результаты сравнительного исследования совладающего поведения респондентов периода средней и поздней взрослости. Для проведения исследования были использованы методики, основанные на разных теоретических концепциях совладающего поведения. Проверен статистический анализ достоверности различий с помощью критерия Манна-Уитни. Определены особенности совладающего поведения каждой возрастной группы, а также доминирующие поведенческие стратегий преодоления стресса в среднем и позднем взрослом возрасте. Проанализированы стрессоры, которые производят наибольшее влияние на личность в периодах средней и поздней взрослости. Ставится гипотеза о том, что именно в среднем зрелом возрасте личность находится на пике конструктивности совладающего поведения. Актуализируется проблема анализа роли старения в изменении совладающего поведения личности при отсутствии болезней, приводящих к физиологическим изменениям.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań porównawczych zaradczych zachowań respondentów średniej i później dorosłości. W badaniach wykorzystano narzędzia oparte o różne koncepcje zachowań zaradczych. Dla ustalenia istotności różnic zastosowano kryterium Manna-Whitneya. Zostały opisane właściwości zachowań zaradczych każdej grupy wiekowej, a także dominujące strategie zwalczania stresu w obu grupach. Analizie poddano stresory o największej sile wpływu na zachowania respondentów średniej i późnej dorosłości. W badaniach została postawiona hipoteza o tym, że w wieku średniej dorosłości jednostka osiąga najwyższy poziom zachowań zaradczych. Zwrócono uwagę na problem starzenia się w aspekcie zmian zachowań zaradczych osób zdrowych, nie dotkniętych chorobami, które mogą prowadzić do zmian fizjologicznych.
The results of a comparative study of coping behavior of respondents in the period of middle and late adulthood are reviewed in the article. Different questionnaires based on various theoretical concepts of coping behavior were used. Statistical analysis to determine the significance of differences using the Mann-Whitney test was performed. Peculiarities of coping behavior of each analyzed age group, as well as the dominant behavioral coping strategies in early and late adulthood are determined. Stressors that produce the greatest impact on the personality in the middle and late adulthood are reviewed. The hypothesis that a person in middle age is at the peak of constructive coping repertoire is introduced. The problem of analysis of the role of aging in changing of the coping behavior of the personality with the absence of diseases, leading to physiological changes is updated.

Obesity is one of the major health problems in adolescents. Health-detrimental lifestyle (i.e. lack of physical activity, inappropriate nutrition) as well as maladaptive styles of coping with stress are regarded as belonging among determinants of obesity. The aim of the study was to establish factors mediating between anxiety and diet-related health behaviors. Participants in the study were 113 adolescents with obesity whose body weight was over 97th centile. They were examined using a set of self-report questionnaires to measure anxiety, coping styles and health behaviors. Emotion-focused coping and seeking social contacts (social diversion) were found to act as mediators between adolescents’ trait anxiety and their health behaviors. The findings suggest that to enhance obese adolescents’ health-promoting behaviors appropriate conditions should be ensured that would not only enable them to express their emotions, but also promote their socializing with peers.

The article discusses longitudinal psychological examinations of victims of the flood that struck the County of Wilków in the Lubelskie Province, Poland, in 2010. Due to the multifaceted character of the research project, only a part of it is presented here, concerning the psychological and environmental variables significant in coping with the effects of the flood. The obtained results, illustrating the subjective importance of the domains described as well as the changes that occurred between 6 and 18 months after the flood, were interpreted in the context of coping with the effects of an ecological disaster. The paper describes the main theoretical conclusions emerging from the research and practical implications for activities connected with broadly understood crisis intervention.

Learning a foreign language in the context of formal education often imposes on students the management of difficult tasks. This demands an adoption of adequate coping behaviour (achievement vs. avoidance). Easy tasks reduce learning opportunities, while too difficult ones lead to escape-motivated problem behavior. For the purpose of the present research it is proposed that the level of FL task difficulty is related to coping behaviour. The empirical results demonstrate that students who perceive FL tasks as difficult apply more avoidance strategies. Apart from that, students with higher and lower levels of task difficulty use similar amounts of achievement strategies. It follows that the implementation of achievement coping is independent from the level of task difficulty.

Online learning is nothing new, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, this form of education has become the preferred and sometimes the only option available as a result of social distancing and nationwide lockdowns. This unprecedented change has triggered a number of previously unknown problems and has forced students to find ways of coping with them. This study investigates the dark sides of online education and coping strategies developed by students by drawing on insights from coping theories to explain students’ adaptive responses. The study is based on qualitative data collected in an online survey of 27 students of tourism from a public university in Poland. The most frequent problem reported by the respondents were technical issues occurring during classes, followed by the lack of motivation and commitment, difficulties with sustained attention and the lack of contact with peers. The majority of students coped with stress caused by the negative aspects of technology in online education by engaging in physical activity. The findings of the study could contribute to guiding the direction for effective and student-friendly adoption of online education.

Research findings have documented that coping of individuals with mild intellectual disability depends on social and psychological factors (Kościelska, 1998; Zigler, 1999; Switzky, 1999; Kurtek, 2009). The aim of the empirical research was to verify the regulatory role of individual experiences (conscious representation of parental attitudes) in coping of youth with mild intellectual disability in confl icts with parents. In the study of a group of 60 students (age: 14–20) from a special school, psychological methods belonging to a cognitive paradigm were used: te PCR Questionnaire (Parent-Child Relation Questionnaire) by A. Roe and M. Siegelman (1963) and RTSS Questionnaire (Coping in Difficult Social Situations) by Danuta Borecka-Biernat (2003). Both methods were adapted to low reading and understanding skills of the population (shorter items without abstract words). The results of multiple regression confi rmed the model of tendentious perception of object by R.H. Fazio (1986) in regulating coping strategies. Problem-oriented responses in confl icts with parents are explained in 30% of variance by individual experiences of Love (from mother and father as well) and not Demanding (rather Casual) mother. The predictors of aggressive coping tendency were experiences of father’s Rejection and lack of mother’s Attention (15% of variance). Finally the avoidance coping was explained in 10% by the experience of lack of mother’s Love. Obtained data comply to the holistic model of social rehabilitation of mildly intellectually disabled youth.

The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of stress of a practical, thirty-hour driving course on changes in salivary cortisol concentration and on changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The second objective was to determine the relation between the style of coping with stress (psychological indicator) and changes in the assessed biological parameters. All volunteers aged 18-30 years completed the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) before the start of the course. They were divided into control (n=15) and experimental (n=18) groups. In the experimental group saliva samples to measure cortisol were collected from each participant: before the start of the course, before the 1st, 13th and 28th driving hour, and blood pressure was measured before the course, during the 15th and 30th hour of the course. Participants in the control group had one saliva sample taken and their blood pressure was measured once at the same time. The results suggest that cortisol concentration in saliva correlates with the hour of the course. Systolic and diastolic pressure also correlates with the hour of the course. CISS test related differences among the individuals in copying with stress (sex as well as age-related) but they did not correlate with the cortisol and blood pressure responses. A driving course is a stress factor that causes changes in salivary cortisol concentration and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The style of coping with stress does not correlate with changes in the salivary cortisol concentration during the course. Changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure during the driving course do not depend on the way of coping with stress.

The occurrence of neoplastic disease is a serious and unsuccessful change in a man’s life situation. Support in coping with neoplastic disease is therapeutic education that is understood as allowing patients to acquire skills to recognize in themselves the internal forces and resources to fight the disease, to cope with emotions, to have constructive communication, to find the sense of illness. Helpful in achieving these objectives can be adventure education, which assumes that change can be achieved through direct and intentional contact with challenge, adventure and experience. The article presents qualitative research conducted among 20 cancer patients who participated in the workshop with the use of adventure. The study shows that participation in adventure education is conducive to looking at disease from a distance and promotes better coping with it. It also leads to the sick person’s amazement with the world, curiosity about life and other people, joy of small things and desire to enter into direct contact with nature.

Several scales were used to assess the levels of coping with stress and pain of 97 Polish hard adventure mountain athletes (Mage = 30.50, SD = 9.45), who climb in winter using mountain ice axes, harnesses, hooks or ropes in high mountains, and 103 Polish soft adventure mountain athletes who summer hike in low mountains (Mage = 28.30, SD = 6.50). The results indicated significant differences between soft and hard adventure climbers in the ways climbers react to stress. The hard adventure climbing group had significantly higher means on the Preventive Coping, Proactive Coping, Task-Oriented Coping, Diverting Attention, Reinterpretation of Pain, Ignoring Pain, Coping Self-Statements and Behavioural Strategies than the soft adventure mountain athletes, but lower means on Emotion-Oriented Coping, Catastrophising and Praying/Hoping compared to the soft mountain athletes group. This study also examined the factor structure of the coping scales in the climbers’ samples. The results suggested that the coping scales contain the following three factors: Passive-Oriented Coping, Future-Oriented Coping and Appraisal-Oriented Coping. The extracted factors discriminate between soft and hard adventure mountain athletes. The hard adventure mountain athletes had significantly higher means on the Future-Oriented Coping and the Appraisal- Oriented Coping, and a lower mean on Passive-Oriented Coping than the soft mountain athletes group.

The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between the sense of coherence and resilience and the styles of stress coping and to determine which of the studied variables (comprehensibility; manageability; meaningfulness; optimistic attitude and energy; perseverance and determination in action; sense of humour and openness to new experiences; personal competences and tolerance of negative affect) was more important in predicting coping styles with stressful situations in the group of juveniles who had been referred to probation centres. Participants in this study were 210 juveniles from probation centres. The following research tools were used in the research: A. Antonovsky’s Orientation to Life Questionnaire, Resilience Scale by N. Ogińska-Bulik and Z. Juczyński, and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations by N. S. Enlder and J. D. A. Parker. The research results show that sense of coherence and resilience play a predictive function for the style which focuses on the task, emotions, avoidance and strategy related to engaging in substitute activities and seeking contact with people. Building (by probation officers) the sense of coherence and resilience among juveniles involves better understanding of the surrounding world and the stimuli which come from it, understanding internal signals and increasing the sense of manageability and comprehensibility, enhancing the ability to use the own and the environmental resources as well as working on the sense of meaningfulness, i.e. the motivational aspect of functioning. Supporting components of resilience (optimistic attitude and energy; perseverance and determination in action; sense of humour and openness to new experiences; personal competences and tolerance of negative affect) through psychoeducational activities (in probation centres) enables better understanding of the own self and, consequently, using stress management strategies aimed at finding a positive solution to a particular situation.

The aim of this paper is to present the concept of allostasis and homeostasis and differences between these constructs, whose understanding is relevant to explain to cope with prolonged stress. In everyday life, homeostasis is responsible for the body’s adjustment to the conditions in which person lives. However, it does not cover all cases to conform to the requirements of the environment and the situation, hence the concept of allostasis could be a complement to it. It is to help explain the functioning of the unit in relation to changes in the susceptibility to subjectively perceived stressors and undertaken attempts to cope with the expected difficulties. Thus, the advantage of this construct is the opportunity to make a custom profile, stress response, illustrating responses and the ability to handle unusual situations, in the changing ambient conditions. The article presents an overview of psychosocial factors associated with the alostatic overload, which indicates as relevant to the development of programmes for the promotion of healthy ageing.
