The paper has three parts. The first part concerns the solidarity principle’s genesis. Its philosophical base is the personalistic anthropology, which speaks about prosocial nature of man and its active participation in the social life. The biblical-theological base of solidarity are: personal dignity of man comme God’s image, person and learning of Christ, community of the Church. The second part of paper discusses elements ontological-anthropological and biblical-ethical which are necessary in the realisation of solidarity’s principle. They are following: pluralism of equal persons and societies, its dialogue, co-production of common good by honest work, integral development economic and intelectual-cultural, equality, social justice and love, peace and reciprocal settlement. The thirt part of paper speaks about three circles of application of solidarity’s principle; namely: solidarity professional-working – defend of rihts of workers, solidarity general-social of nation and state – protection of economic and political human rihts, solidarity international of humanity – trend towards peace and prosperity.

John Paul II in his writings repeatedly pointed to the problems that affect both individual man and entire nations. The twentieth anniversary of Pope Paul VIʼs encyclical Populorum Progressio has become an opportunity for John Paul II to document the predicament of his predecessor to analyze the pains of the modern world. One of the most serious problems of world-wide perceived by the pope in the mid-eighties of the twentieth century in the encyclical Sollicitudo rei socialis was the so- Social question. The number of countries on the way of development far exceeded the number of developed countries, economic and cultural gap between the south and north so called. The south was still deepening. The key to resolving this global crisis is, according to John Paul II, the interpersonal and international solidarity. According to the Pope, only through mutual multidimensional and multifaceted assistance and cooper-ation is the integral development of every individual and the development of entire nations and states.

Przedmiotem analiz zawartych w niniejszym artykule jest interpretacja genezy solidarności z perspektywy papieskiego nauczania zaprezentowanego w Orędziu na Światowy Dzień Pokoju 2014. Zasada solidarności w ujęciu Franciszka nawiązuje do dobra wspólnego. Ważnym zagadnieniem omawianego orędzia jest bowiem kwestia wspólnego działania na poczet dobra wspólnoty, a ściślej fakt, iż z tegoż działania nikt nie może być wyłączony. Wskazuje się na dwa elementy składowe fundamentu solidarności. Pierwszym z tychże elementów jest aktywność ludzka realizowana w ścisłym nawiązaniu do norm moralnych. Drugi element fundamentu solidarności stanowi pokój Chrystusowy. Jezus jest Pokojem. Chrześcijanie mają obowiązek głosić Chrystusa w słowie i czynie, co jest równoznaczne z budowaniem w świecie ładu Bożego. Publikacja jest podzielona na dwie części. Tematyka pierwszego rozdziału oscyluje wokół koncepcji solidarności w kontekście dobra wspólnego, stanowiącej nawiązanie do zagadnień zawartych w Sollicitudo rei socialis. Natomiast część druga jest poświęcona źródłom koncepcji solidarności autorstwa papieża Franciszka, a więc moralnie uporządkowanej aktywności ludzkiej oraz zagadnieniu pokoju Chrystusowego.
The paper discusses the foundation principles of solidarity set out in the papal teaching presented in the Message for the World Day of Peace 2014. Francis’ view on the notion of solidarity derives from the concept of common good. The key point of the papal discourse is the problem of the communal effort for the good of the entire community where it is strongly emphasized that no-one ought to be excluded from this task. There are two constituting elements of the principle of solidarity. The first one is the human activity which respects the moral norms. The latter, is the peace of Christ. Jesus is the Peace. Christians are called to proclaim Christ by their words and actions which corresponds to the call of building the God’s order in the world. The paper is divided into two parts. The first one accounts for the notion of solidarity in the context of the common good and relates to the teaching presented in Sollicitudo rei socialis. The latter part, on the other hand, focuses on Pope Francis’ ideas on the origins of the concept of solidarity that is the morally human activity, and the peace brought by Christ.

The subject of this article is the social teaching of Pope Francis, devoted to the dreams of the development of a world community that supports peoples and nations in an international, state, regional and local context. A community in which all help each other, in particular based on universal fraternity and social friendship, presented in the encyclical Fratelli tutti of 2020. In his view, devoid of both good and critical assessment and limited only to a general description. Moreover, the article presents elements concerning the teaching of Catholic social teaching towards a human community united in building peace, solidarity, justice and common good, in the sense of community of people and nations, as well as in the face of the values and duties of citizens, rulers and state authorities. It aims to show the attitude of the Catholic Church to the development of communities and the changes taking place in them, related, inter alia, to the challenges and problems for the integral development of these communities, in various periods of history, as well as in today’s globalizing world, in order to present them against the background of the reflections of Pope Francis relating to this issue, and thus answering the question – what to develop in an international community based on the above values?

Liberalism and republicanism constitute two major concepts of civic participation, both in the historical and the socio-philosophical meaning. The first one is questioned because of its individualistic vision of citizenship leading to impairment of community ideas and values, responsibility and motivation to engage in actions promoting the common good and decay of social bonds. The republican pattern of civic participation is a correction of this concept, putting emphasis on the value and meaning of communal forms of social life as well as on civil education. The article characterizes and compares both patterns of civic involvement in socio-political life, emphasizing differences and simplifications occurring between particular orientations of both republican and liberal concepts. Moreover, the article aims at interpreting main ideas constituting the republican idea, such as: freedom, equality, community, common good and solidarity.

The central position of the person in the community life determines the personalist character of the society. Therefore, one cannot account for the specificity of the life within a society ignoring the holistic understanding of the human being. Among all the human communities mentioned by the Catechism of the Catholic Church it is the political community which places the individual human person in the centre of it. The objective of this paper is to present the relationship between preserving the indelible integrity of the human dignity and the efficiency of the successful fulfilment of the tasks which the political community is up to. The article is divided into three chapters. The first one deals with scriptural references relevant to the topic of the political community which the authors of the Catechism quote. The second chapter outlines the key elements of the Catechism’s concept of the political community. The final chapter characterises the Christian democracy as such a political regime that provides the best protection of the dignity of the human person as well as the human rights. The teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church serves as a kind of a reminder that to prefer the care for the good of a person in the framework of the political community means to build the Kingdom of God. The man who remains faithful to the divine precepts transforms the world into a more humane one.

Both in the past and in the current period of human history we encounter similar problems: public lies, existential and economical destabilization, military conflicts, religious and spiritual confusion etc. As in St. Augustine´s time, today we, the modern Christians, are amidst all this turmoil also facing the challenge of how to make this world a better place to live while staying focused on the eternal and supreme Good – God himself. In a time of contemporary economic and financial crises, when many people face the threat of losing their jobs and experiencing many humiliating forms of social injustice, the Church through its leaders and thinkers is reminding us of the importance of the elementary principles of its social doctrine, as well as the universal moral norms and values that need to be exercised in the public life of the human family, as well as the personal lives of individuals. Every crisis is caused by the abandoning of morality and therefore the solution to any crisis requires our return to the timeless dimensions of truth and ethics.

The subject of social justice are groups or whole societies – also states, object of this justice are their mutual rights and common good. The process of economic and technological globalization means among other things: establishment of the world market, predominant role of international companies, centralization of leading elites’ decisions, financial disproportion between individual people and countries. In the teaching of contemporary popes (John XXIII’s, Paul VI’s, John Paul II’s) the idea of social justice has also international dimension and therefore process of economic globalization ought to respect two principles of the Church’s social teaching: the principle of the subsidiarity and the principle of solidarity. The principle of the subsidiarity demands to respect subjectivity of all nations and states as well as to aid their integral development. The principle of solidarity postulates creation of common good of world society, this good are: peace, economic prosperity, commerce profitable for all states, cooperation and financial help of rich countries for underdeveloped countries. The social justice in the international dimension is the expression and the imperative of solidarity of all nations and states.

Crisis, sometimes associated with historically distant times or centrally planned economies, has turned out to be one of the main contemporary issues. Hence different systems like socialism and capitalism become similar in their inability to reply to expectations for a safe, peaceful and abundant life. It means that economic problems are more complex in their nature. Thorough analysis of the roots of different crises should therefore reach deeper than just economic explanations. This is the point where ethical and cultural explanations may be useful because they strive to explore the socio-cultural fabric at its foundations in the hierarchy of values and vision of human beings and society. When it comes to contemporary crisis the problem is twofold: firstly, there is the threat that the crisis will be treated inadequately and not realistically in consequence. Secondly, the roots ofthe crisis may not be diagnosed properly, which may lead to false ‘treatment’. This article is an attempt to highlight the above issues and analyse them in the context ofthe common good approach, which seems to offer valuable potential to understand the difficulties properly and offer a reasonable plan for recovery.

Jest to wykład, który został wygłoszony w Sejmie RP 15 kwietnia 2011 r. z okazji beatyfikacji Jana Pawła II. Wykład obejmuje dwie grupy zagadnień. Pierwsza grupa dotyczy prerogatyw, w których głos w sprawach polityki zabierał papież Jan Paweł II. Druga grupa obejmuje główne wątki problemowe w jego licznych wystąpieniach skierowanych do polityków. Papież zwrócił uwagę, że politycy w swoich działaniach powinni kierować się zasadą dobra wspólnego człowieka, zasadą pomocniczości, solidarności, sprawiedliwości i ochroną praw człowieka.
This is the lecture which was presented at the seat of the Polish parliament on the 15th of April 2011 on the occasion of the beatification of John Paul II. The lecture contains two groups of issues. The first group concerns the prerogatives on which the Pope John Paul II took a voice in matters of politics. The second group includes the major problematic topics in his many speeches addressed to the politicians. The Pope pointed out that politicians in their activities should be guided by the principle of the common good of the human being, the principle of subsidiarity, solidarity, justice and protection of human rights.

Stigmatization is a process, which exists in the modern society in many ways. It concerns many different groups of people, marked with a specific, non-accepted way. The essay is an attempt to present the phenomenon of stigmatization – how it influences peoples opinions and behavior. The main goal however is a moral evaluation of social stigmatization, on the basis of the principles of social life, like the dignity of human person, the principle of common good, the principle of universal allocation of goods, the principle of subsidiarity, the category of participation, and the principle of solidarity. The results of the this work show, that the stigmatization is a maleficent process not only concerning individuals, but also groups and a whole society.

Opracowanie jest głosem w dyskusji: bezpieczeństwo jako dobro. W świetle konstytucyjnej zasady dobra wspólnego zaproponowano redefinicję bezpieczeństwa jako sumy warunków życia społecznego umożliwiających i ułatwiających integralny rozwój wszystkich członków wspólnoty. Dobro wspólne jak i publiczne są produktami wytwarzanymi przez struktury państwowe oraz ich członków. Dla minimalizowania postaw „wspólne – niczyje” i free-riderów, w celu stworzenia zależności, odpowiedzialności dbania o dobro, poruszono wątek teorii solidarności grupowej.
The study is a voice in the discussion: security as a good. In the light of the constitutional principle of the common good, a redefinition of security was proposed as the sum of the conditions of social life enabling and facilitating the integral development of all members of the community. The common and public good are products produced by state structures and their members. In order to minimize the attitudes of „common – nobody’s” and free-riders, in order to create dependence, responsibility to care for good, the topic of the theory of group solidarity was raised.

Dobro wspólne, solidarność i pomocniczość są społecznymi zasadami prawa naturalnego. Dotyczą więc każdej formy życia społecznego. W ich duchu należy kształtować również życie wspólne sióstr i braci zakonnych. Ważnymi elementami dobra wspólnego jest realizacja charyzmatu zgromadzenia, odpowiednia formacja do życia zakonnego, zachowanie reguł wspólnego życia i ewangeliczny styl sprawowania władzy. Solidarność w życiu wspólnoty przejawia się we wzajemnej odpowiedzialności za siebie osób i wspólnot, pomocy słabszym i będącym w potrzebie osobom i wspólnotom, a także zaangażowanie na rzecz wspólnoty. Pomocniczość w jej aspekcie negatywnym postuluje szacunek dla autonomii i podmiotowości osób i wspólnot. Natomiast aspekt pozytywny zakłada uzupełniającą pomoc świadczoną przez przełożonych i całą rodzinę zakonną osobom i wspólnotom znajdującym się w trudnej sytuacji.
The common good, solidarity and subsidiarity are social principles of natural law. They thus apply to every form of social life. Common life of religious sisters and brothers should also be shaped in their spirit. The realization of the charism of the Congregation, appropriate formation for religious life, adherence to the rules of common life and the evangelical manner of exercising authority are important elements of the common good. Solidarity in the life of the community manifests itself in the mutual responsibility of persons and communities for each other, the assistance to vulnerable individuals and communities in need, and through a commitment to the community. Subsidiarity in its negative aspect calls for respect to the autonomy and subjectivity of individuals and communities. However, the positive aspect presupposes complementary support provided by superiors and the entire religious family to persons and communities found in difficult situations.

The Church as an institution, but also a community of believers, is a part of a society. Thus, She is present in the space of processes and changes taking place in a society. A society is extended in tension between conflict and harmony. In that context, the Episcopal Conference of Poland reflected on the current social issues in the Polish society in a form of a letter. It is focused on the necessity of common effort in favour of dialogue and order and in the face of existing destructive phenomena. The letter has become a perspective for considerations on elements of social life like social mission of the Church, conflict, solidarity, the truth, dialogue. Discussing particular questions draws from the Tradition and the teaching of the Church Magisterium. The undertaken reflection is an attempt to argue for social dialogue which is necessary, especially in more and more pluralistic and at the same time full of tensions society. Genuine dialogue includes being directed to an opponent, respect, and striving for solutions in the perspective of searching the truth and taking into account human dignity.
Kościół jako instytucja, ale i wspólnota wierzących, jest częścią społeczeństwa. Jest zatem obecny w przestrzeni dziejących się w nim procesów i zmian. Społeczeństwo rozciągnięte jest w napięciu między konfliktem a harmonią. Konferencja Episkopatu Polski podjęła w tym kontekście refleksję w postaci listu podejmującego problematykę bieżących zagadnień społecznych w polskim społeczeństwie. Skupiony jest on na zagadnieniu konieczności wspólnego wysiłku na rzecz dialogu i ładu wobec istniejących destrukcyjnych zjawisk. List ten stał się perspektywą dla podjęcia namysłu nad takimi elementami życia społecznego, jak: społeczna misja Kościoła, konflikt, solidarność, prawda, dialog. Omówienie poszczególnych zagadnień czerpie z Tradycji i nauczania Magisterium Kościoła. Podjęta refleksja jest próbą argumentowania na rzecz dialogu społecznego, który jest konieczny zwłaszcza w coraz bardziej pluralistycznym, a tym samym pełnym napięć, społeczeństwie. Rzeczywisty dialog zawiera w sobie skierowanie na oponenta, szacunek i dążenie do rozwiązań w perspektywie poszukiwania prawdy i z uwzględnieniem ludzkiej godności.

Pandemia COVID-19 uświadomiła z całą wyrazistością wiele dylematów, związanych z ochroną życia i zdrowia, dotyczących nie tylko sprawności systemów opieki zdrowotnej, ale także o charakterze moralnym. Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na niektóre z nich z perspektywy teologicznomoralnej ze szczególnym odniesieniem do społecznego charakteru troski o zdrowie i życie. Rozważania przyjmą postać ogólnej prezentacji problemów i wyzwań związanych z epidemią COVID-19 z odniesieniem do fundamentalnych zasad życia społecznego.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear many of the dilemmas related to the protection of life and health, not only about the efficiency of health systems, but also about of a moral nature. The aim of the article is to draw attention to some of them from the theological and moral perspective, with particular reference to the social nature of care for health and life. The reflections will take the form of a general presentation of problems and challenges related to the COVID-19 epidemic with reference to the fundamental principles of social life.
