Opis:
This paper is focused on problem of quality of diesel commercial fuels in Polish market and an effect of their properties as well on engine parameters as environment The academic staff from Wrocław University of Technology put the own experience to the huge discussion by making research in the Wroclaw-city, where some probes of fuels were taken from six different commercial fuel stations. Chemical and physical properties of fuels were checked. A real diesel engine VW 1,9 TDI was investigated in university lab of Division of Motor Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engines. Typical engine performances were built including power, torque, fuel consumption, toxicity levels due to different fuels. The IC engine on the test bench, oxygen content in fuels, example of full load performance of VW1,9 TDI for fuel Bio D20-type, differences of mean effective pressure for different fuels, differences of carbon monoxide in exhaust for different fuels, differences of nitric oxides in exhaust for different fuels, differences of smog level in exhaust for different fuels, differences of heat release for different fuels, relation between engine torque and oxygen content in fuels vs. engine rotation are presented in the paper.

Thermodynamics systems may be classified as isolated, closed, or open based on the possible transfer of mass and energy across the system boundaries. An isolated system is one that is not influenced in any way by the surroundings. This means that no energy in the form of heat or work may cross the boundary of the system. In addition, no mass may cross the boundary of the system. A thermodynamic system is defined as a quantity of matter of fixed mass and identity upon which attention is focused for study. A closed system has no transfer of mass with its surroundings, but may have a transfer of energy (either heat or work) with its surroundings. An open system is one that may have a transfer of both mass and energy with its surroundings. Described system being an object of the paper is an open system for some phenomena. An object the paper is the thermodynamical analysis of the filling process of the cylinder which occurs in calculated period from the percussion cap of the position the piston at TDC to it position at BDC, at constant average value of the pressure in the cylinder. During durations of the filling process of the cylinder, dirt of the working charge combustion products are not taken into account. One accepts that the quantity of the working charge in the established point placed on the compression line by piston BDC is equal quantity of the working charge in the end point of the filling process, answering to the start point of the real compression process. The state of the working charge in cylinder described is four parameters: a pressure, a temperature, quantity moles of the working charge and its volume. For appointment those parameters, earlier worked out dependences are put-upon.

Opis:
An approach for predicting the onset of knock and estimating its intensity in spark ignition engines is described. It is based on evaluating a dimensionless energy functional group, Kn, formulated to provide a numerical criterion to test continually, while using predictive models of the performance of spark ignition engines, for the onset of knock and its relative intensity at any instant during the combustion process. The basis for the derivation of this knock criterion and its significance are described. Examples involving gaseous fuels and their mixtures under different operating conditions show how the criterion can be employed for the prediction of the onset of knock and the associated knock-limited performance. It is shown that this approach can be made an integral part of modeling spark ignition engine operation to be used for optimizing engine performance while ensuring throughout the avoidance of the onset of knock. Among other things variations relative energy release and end gas mass fraction during flame propagation for non-knocking and border line knocking conditions, variations in the calculated knock criterion value with time for knock free, light and heavy knocking conditions, with compression ratio for hydrogen and methane as a fuel CFR engine, calculated optimum spark timing maximum power variation the probability of the incidence of knock versus spark timing, the suppression of the onset of knock through lean operation or cooled EGR are illustrated in the paper.

Opis:
The paper has been intended to shortly describe the design of an adaptive jet engine, commonly termed 'the bypass engine'. Examples have been presented of how the bleeding of air affects the most essential engine performance characteristics, i.e. thrust, specific fuel consumption, and efficiency. Pointed out are economic advantages (only slight) of the application of this design as compared to the one-pass turbojet engine with no bleed. Furthermore, considered are capabilities to adapt an engine design of the bypass type for a one-pass turbojet engine K-15 as one of several upgrade opportunities. Simulation-based computations have proved, however, that there are some limitations on the bleed air amount and initial engine operational range for the accomplishment of the idea from the standpoint of capabilities to maintain conditions for the compressor-turbine matching. Also, the effect of this type of air bleeding upon the engine running-up process and the change in the running-up time for this type of the upgraded engine has been shown. In the Recapitulation and Conclusions section a mention has been made on the amount of bleed air to be passed through external channels from behind the compressor to behind the turbine: the bleed air amount increases as the total rate of the air flow along the engine flow path increases. It means that better effects of applying this type of air bleeding processes are gained in large engines. Presented are also capabilities of further developments and applications.

It was found that there are discrepancies between the values of diagnostic parameters obtained in the test and natural exploitation. In addition, no appropriate tests are carried out which would be based on the degree of engine degradation in long-term natural use. One of the reasons is the lack of adequate, non-invasive diagnostic methods. The aim of the work was to show the possibility of creating a new diagnostic parameter of combustion engines in their natural operation. The parameter can be determined by a new method (presented in the article). The method is based on the assumption that the technical condition of the engine can be judged on the basis of the run-up curve, and in particular, on the basis of the linear direction coefficient, which is approximated by the points of the run-up curve at particular moments of the run-up. An additional requirement is that the points of the run-up curve are the average value of the speed from many runs. In addition, the statistical distributions of the speed values in the individual moments of the run-up should be of the same type. The direction coefficient of the straight line determined is a diagnostic parameter. The value of the new coefficient is the value of the straight-line factor. Further works are underway to determine the relationship between the directional coefficient and the technical condition of the engine.

Opis:
The paper presents an analysis of the problems associated with the catalytic reduction of emissions in a diesel engine in cold start. The tests were performed at the station in the climate chamber at lowered ambient temperatures: -7, -15 and -20oC. A heated three-function platinum-palladium catalytic reactor with a metal monolith was used in the tests. The test methodology included a measurement of toxic fume concentraction upstream and downstream the catalytic reactor at simultaneous measurement of the start-up parameters and measurement of temperatures in selected engine and catalytic reactor locations. A period of the cold engine start-up is characterized by a relatively high carbon oxide and hydrocarbon emission. The level of that emissions increases, as the ambient temperature gets lower. As a result of the tests the influence of heating up the reactor on its operation during the self-ignition engine start-up was identified.Carbon oxide and hydrocarbon emission during the start-up period can be reduced by initial heating up the catalytic reactor before the start-up by means of an electric heater. When heating up the reactor surface up to 400oC at ambient temperature of -7oC, CO concentration can be reduced by 80...90% and the hydrocarbon concentration can be reduced by app. 70% on the average.

Opis:
It has been agreed to call the loads changing with time and acting in most varied constructional arrangements as well as the stresses accompanying them changeable or cyclic. Changeable stresses produce in the material a very complex entanglement of phenomena and changes depending on the value of those stresses and on the number of cycles. These are fatigue phenomena and changes. They develop successively till the element has been destroyed. This is called the element material fatigue. Thus changing loads and stresses are also called fatigue loads and stresses. The purpose of the presented work was to develop a method of comparative investigations for wet replaceable sleeves in direct contact with coolant that have been submitted to technological treatment of sub-edge zone material strengthening. The source of loads is a cyclically occurring normal component of gas and mass forces in the cylinder. The frequency of changes is a derivative of the number of strokes in the engine run and of the rotational speed of the crankshaft. Fatigue loads can be the reason why cylinder liner cracks in the edge zone. The results of the fatigue testing of the technological process of strengthening the cylinder lines sub-edge zone on crack sensitivity shows differences in the behaviour of particular samples, depending on the parameters of strengthening. The fatigue testing method can be used to evaluate the technological process of cylinder liner.

One of the basic problems concerning dual fuel powering of self-ignition engines is to determine the minimal dose of diesel oil injected into the combustion chamber in order to trigger self-ignition. Most research conducted to date on double-fuel powering self-ignition has been carried out on engines with mechanical injection systems, which does not ensure the possibility of obtaining very small diesel oil doses initiating self-ignition. The original system of fuelling the engine with diesel oil was replaced with a laboratory Common Rail system. The basic parameters of injector operation were controlled by a specially-developed system ensuring continuous choice of parameters of injector operation. The examined engine was fitted with a prototypical system of methane-air fuelling and a system for controlling and adjusting the supplied dose of methane This study presents the results of research aiming at determining the pilot dose injected into the combustion chamber of the engine to ensure the course of combustion in the engine operating under various loads. The results presented in the paper concern tests of a single-cylinder self-ignition engine, HATZ 1B40, operating in a generator adopted for CNG fuelling.

Opis:
Combustion in a diesel engine is a complex physicochemical process, changing the time at which the events take place simultaneously heat and mass transfer and chemical reactions. The development of internal combustion engines goes towards meeting the increasingly stringent requirements for toxic exhaust emissions, reducing fuel consumption and therefore reduce carbon emissions and protect the Earth's natural resources. The problem to solve in modern combustion engines is the emission of NOx. One way to reduce the emission of toxic NOx combustion engine power is water-hydrocarbon emulsions [1]. Research combustion engines water-hydrocarbon emulsions has been its tradition. So far, attempts were carried out using an emulsion obtained by a chemical. Emulsions of oil and water can be obtained by adding various detergents to prevent delamination of the oil and water. In this article, we consider the possibility of applying a mixture of water and oil as an alternative fuel used to power internal combustion engines used in heavy road transport. This work is preliminary work, also having to check whether this is the future direction of the work. The measurements of emissions of exhaust gases and fuel consumption. After analysing the test results confirmed that the improvement of the economic and environmental performance of modern diesel engines, it can be achieved by supplying synthetic diesel or gas oil water emulsions. It was found that the use of emulsion leads to a reduction of fuel consumption and NOx emissions.

A vibroacoustic signal of an internal combustion engine contains several diagnostic information, which are -for the most part - not utilised since they require complex processing methods in order to separate useful data and to eliminate disturbances. The way of analysis ofsuch complex signal depends on the diagnostic aim. It is a rich source of information not only concerning the combustion process, but also various mechanical defects occurring in the driving system (valves, clutch, gearbox). Wear of elements as well as small mechanical defects cause the adaptation of the control system to new parameters. Thus, in many cases these adaptive systems can be masking mechanical defects. Burning out of exhaust valves or an improper valve clearance are examples of such defects. The method of diagnostics of leakages in a system: exhaust valve - cylinder, on the basis of measuring the vibration signal of the engine head is proposed in the paper. The results of the analysis of the engine vibration signal under conditions of a defected exhaust valve and an increased valve clearance are presented. The active diagnostic experiment was performed on the engine of Fiat Punto 1.2. During road tests the vibrations acceleration signal was recorded as well as certain auxiliary signals used for a synchronisation and identification of engine timing. The natural acceleration of vibrations in the resonance frequency range of the piezoelectric sensor was utilized. The vibration signal was pre-processed i.e. filtered, synchronously averaged and windowed. Satisfying diagnostic results of the valve defect or the improper valve clearance were obtained on the basis of the analysis of the engine vibration acceleration signal envelope. The signal measures explicitly indicating the valve condition were determined. The method, after certain modifications, can be applied for the on-line valve diagnostics.

In the paper some problems concerning relations between external bearing loadings and critical lining stresses are described for test stand with rotating load vector. According to the standard ISO 7905/1 this type of test stand, for dynamically loaded slide bearing, is recommended as a basic research unit for material testing in a complete bearing unit. The lining stress calculation results occurred being dependent on applied calculation model. The influence of sliding surface shape and housing stiffness on bearing fatigue have been considered. The MWO-stand operational principle, standard tested half-bearing, bearing housing of rigid profile, bearing housing of edge elastic profile, distribution of radial and circumferential stress in the slide layer of the bearing bush tested in MWO stand, typical damage of the bearing tested, finite element model geometry for bush and housing are illustrated in the paper. Performed calculations revealed that neglecting the shape and dimensions of the housing in calculation model of the contemporary thin-walled multilayer bearing bushes are leading to incorrect evaluation of critical stresses leading to fatigue cracks in slide layers of the bearing tested in machines with rotary load vector. That kind of bearing alloys is not employed in highly dynamically loaded bearings of contemporary machines, especially in IC engine bearing systems.

Mathematical model the working process occurring in the cylinder of the four-stroke piston-combustion engine is an object of the paper. The following assumptions consisting in that thermodynamics system is an open thermodynamical system, in accepted model were taken into account. Generalised mathematical model of the working process in the cylinder of the piston-four-stroke combustion engine was worked out. Dependences describing instantaneous volume of the working charge in the cylinder, equation of the balance of the of the working charge quantity in the cylinder and state equation of the working charge in the cylinder were considered at formulating of assumptions. Values of coefficients for each component processes of working cycle with taking into consideration of the dependence concerning the compression process , the combustion process, and expansion process after finishing of the combustion process were an object of worked out mathematical model. For nonstationary processes formulating working cycle of the engine realized during openings of valves (the open system), the quantity and composition of the working charge in the cylinder, its specific heat and temperature are variable.
