Opis:
When we see in the world the fact that there are many beings, and we indicate that the particular beings exist in a compositional way, we face the task of learning about a new problem: how can we define and determine the relations between beings and between the elements within a being? Although the theory of participation has roots that go back to Plato, and so to a philosophy in which the pluralism of being was rejected and which accepted an identity-based conception of being, participation finds its ontological rational justification only (and ultimately) in the pluralistic and compositional conception of being. With the description of participation as a “descending road” in the cognition of being, we are restricting ourselves to the presentation of how participation is understood in realistic metaphysics (while we shall leave aside the history of the question). We will show the aspects of participation that provide a foundation for wisdom-oriented cognition, and we will show the specific character of participation-oriented cognition as a “descending road.”

The paper argues that it is possible to provide a partial explanation especially in cognitive, sociological and psychological terms for the fact that the US – Japan negotiations prior to Pearl Harbor in 1941 failed the way they did. The analysis seeks to show in detail how the role of mistranslations of some of the Japanese coded instructions which were sent from Tokyo by Foreign Minister Togo to Ambassador Nomura in Washington, D.C., and intercepted and decoded by the US military sigint personnel contributed to the failure of the negotiations, thereby making the December 1941 events at Pearl Harbor virtually unavoidable.

Opis:
The paper presents arguments for treating language as a tool for cognition and communications. It articulates an opposite view to the one which considers language as an independent module shaping cognition and thinking. According to the conception of the socially – based cognition the mind is a controller of the adaptive behavior, and communication is a strategic action to which language is subjected. The model of the linguistic categories arranges words according to the level of their abstraction; and a number of research results presented in the paper indicate that there is a relationship between the level of abstraction of the words used and the inference related to events, emotions and memory. Recognizing language as a tool for cognition and communication leads to the acceptance of the necessity to widen the language awareness. This kind of thinking is supported by the presented results of research on the relationship between linguistic categories and the stereotypes, communication of the interpersonal distance and the process of asking questions and giving answers.

A study reviews digital photography’s fields of application in terms of its individual and social consequences. The Author drew attention to the nature of contemporary selfportraits known as selfies, discussing their psychological functions, reasons for taking them and publishing on-line (uploading). It also presents a more functional use of the achievements of digital photography for “traditional” fields of exploitation, the therapeutic and self- therapeutic uses such as photoanalysis, “reading pictures” or phototherapy. There was also a mention about the ubiquity of modern photography in various fields of science and cognition. Further in the article, a photograph is viewed in the context of its basic media – Internet and the specifics of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). The way currently photos are published and modified results in a number of consequences which may be surprising as well as disturbing for those who often carelessly publicize them. At the end the attention was drawn to the privacy risks associated with taking pictures of people, as well as manipulative use of the image.

Opis:
The article, drawing on the tradition of Frankfurt School, brings to the focus a great paradox of the Enlightenment – a hidden affinity of rationality and mytho- logy. Noticing the phenomenon of great enthusiasm, underlying the message of the Enlightenment, it tries to pin down the starting point of a new scientistic eschatology – bringing to life a mirage of unending prosperity and unlimited pro- fusion, following the advances of science. The idea of accumulation of knowledge is approached as a pivot of a new mythology. At the same time, putting light on the notion of “cognition industry”, the article offers critical insights tracing an inevitable erosion of high-minded dreams and expectations. Cognition industry is studied as a machinery turning up-side down the hopes of the Enlightenment – protecting the interests of instrumental rationality, and replacing the ideal of getting at the truth with the mechanism putting in motion the “production” of truth, operating in a domain of narrowly calibrated utility.

This paper argues that within contemporary neuroscience and cognitive psychology a new theoretical framework is emerging for the integrated consideration of unconscious (intuitive) processing with conscious ones. This framework requires inclusion of new theories of the brain and consciousness dynamics (Baars, Damasio, Dehaene, Friston, Gazzaniga, LeDoux), evolution of the human memory system (Tulving), and theories of procedural, associative and working memory (Baddley, Reber). Evolutionarily old intuitive processing is not unique, and it is an integral component of any cognitive processes. A revolutionary new synthesis combining intuitive and conscious processing may take the form of a mind vector integrating the two.

The author attempts to demonstrate that the poem "Eliasz" by Bolesław Leśmian has cognitive character. She devotes a lot of attention to the connections between Leśmian poetry and realistic symbolism. Part of the article concerns the poet’s description of the netherworld. Furthermore, it inquires whether the poem accomplishes the ultimate pursuit of poetry – remaining open to one true reality, free of individualism and intellectual constraints. Eventually, the interpretation demonstrates how, through a detached protagonist – "Eliasz", Leśmian begins to doubt the power of poetry to bring one back to primeval cognitive context, to such state of mind where reality is experienced directly through intuition and imagination.

Opis:
The article is a study of the ways of interpreting the image of the library in Józef Kallenbach’s short story Przygoda bibliotekarza (The Adventure of the Librarian, 1888). The presented examples demonstrate the multi-dimensional meaning of library as an intellectual problem and cognition space. The author shows Kallenbach’s points of view concerning library as a motif which helps to pose questions about convention and conception of realism and, as a consequence, about Kallenbach’s view on culture. The present discussion also sheds light on a few important texts which create a context to analyse the short story by Kallenbach. Intertextual allusions can be helpful in understanding the main problem presented in The Adventure of the Librarian. The paper focuses on the meaning of the library as a graveyard as well as on dream and onirism as a literary convention which expresses the possibilities of cognition and asks what realism in Polish literature of the end the 19th century in Kallenbach’s case actually is.The article discusses the aesthetic differentiation of the library in the short story The Adventure of the Librarian by Józef Kallenbach and the painting Der Bu¨cherwurm (Bookworm) by Carl Spitzweg. The author tries to prove that The Adventure of the Librarian could be an epic ekphrasis to Spitzweg’s painting.

The text starts with the assumption that a mistake understood in various ways can serve cognition on many levels. Examples from the field of aesthetics and contemporary art are described and interpreted. It is picturesqueness as a beauty “spoiled” by a mistake constituting an aesthetic value, an accidental breakage of Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass revealing an order different to the ordinary course of events and time, distortions in Stan Brakhage's structural film paradoxically revealing love, demonstrating cognitive imperfection of the senses in the interactive video staging of Samuel Beckett's Breath and in illusion constructed in Olafur Eliasson's Weather Project, critical use of ugliness to expose and criticize the system by Leon Golub's "bad drawing style", ironic music video by Laibach, or a subversive film by Martin Arnold, imbalances creating non-ordinary spaces in M. C. Esher's graphics, and errors programming new orders in the digital world of Jared Tarbell, and finally non-places exposed in in the "bad style" photographs of Edward Ruscha or used in installations by Grzegorz Sztabiński. Deliberate distortions, deformations, errors, mistakes, imperfections, accepted randomness or "parasitism" present in these works are presented as inquiries concerning cognitive possibilities and searches leading to the disclosure of spaces and orders different from those experienced daily, in which one can see the striving to achieve metaphysical cognition.

Aim fo this paper was to find and explicate similarities between science and religion with respect to classical criteria of scientific cognition. The discourse was led within the following aspects: knowledge, method, language, institution and limits. The drived conclusion is that religion can be interpreted as satisfying all genral conditions of scientific enterprise. Such a conclusion is interpreted as supporting two possible thesis: (1) religion as a scientific discipline ought to be implemented into scientific enterprise in the way of interdisciplinary cooperation; (2) the presented similarity remains constructed, not discovered – there is no sense in comparing religion to science, since these two notions are too general and vague. Regardless which interpretation one would prefer, it shows, that anti-theistic arguments based on showing religion as opposed to science, do not sound.

Opis:
Ambrosiaster uses two forms for the definition of the concept of faith. The first one – in the sense of a noun: fides; the second one – from the perspective of the knowing subject: credere. Abraham’s act of faith, whose object is God, is shown as a cognitive model. The acceptance of God’s authority leads to recognizing in Christ the Son of God. Believers receive in Baptism the gift the Holy Spirit and knowing the will of God. By participating in the fullness of His life, they are given access to the Eucharist. Knowability is one of God’s characteristics. Accepting this fact and submitting oneself to God’s guidance results in knowing the Trinity. Christ’s confidence in the Father is the basic principle of knowing through faith, and this translates into absolute certainty of the truthfulness of the conclusions. It is a duty of believers to explore the truth. The Gospel, interpreted by the authority of the Church, remains the main source of revelation. The intensity of cognition influences the entirety of one’s life, manifests itself in the acceptance of all the truths of the faith and in creating harmony between faith and the virtues of love and hope.

There is one major reason that the conception of nervous reflection cannot be directly associated with “cognition” even though it undoubtedly should be a vi- tal component of the definition of this term. Namely, reflection, understood as the creation of equivalents of external stimuli, is a process that happens not only in the brains of living creatures, but also in inanimate matter. A thermometer “reflects” changes in temperature, but we would not say that it “knows” them- it is the man who knows the temperature when using a thermometer. Reflection means cognition only when it determines offensive or defensive reactions of an organism: when it constitutes an element of the mechanism of adaptation to the environment, it enables the individual to be guided by the reflected external phenomena.
