Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller has occurred in the Gulf of Gdańsk in low abundance for several years. However, in summer 1997 a significant increase in the numbers of cells was noted. In the same year a P. minimum bloom was recorded for the first time in one of the harbour basins in Gdynia, giving rise to a brown-red coloration of the water.

The diatom Dactyliosolen fragilissimus (Bergon) Hasle 1996 (syn. Rhizosolenia fragilissima Bergon 1903) occurs in the western Baltic Sea predominantly in summer, sometimes forming blooms. In autumn 2005, numerous D. fragilissimus cells were observed for the first time in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk. In November 2005a bloom was formed: at its peak, the diatom count was 1.1×106 cells dm−3 and its biomass was 8.9 mg dm−3.

The paper presents an improved method of determining petroleum pollutants in water based on fluorescence, which allows the oil content to be estimated with an accuracy better than 50%. The method was used to measure the oil content in Gulf of Gdańsk seawater sampled at Gdynia-Orłowo between January 2006 and September 2008. The 174 measurements made during this period ranged from 1 to 120 μg kg−1, but the majority did not exceed 20 μg kg−1. The most probable level of contamination is c. 5 μg kg−1.

The organic matter production/respiration balance in the coastal water column was examined, both the primary production and community respiration being measured with the oxygen light-and-dark bottle method. Community respiration (CR) was always lower than the gross primary production (GPP) measured at a standard light intensity of 390 μE m−2 s−1, which amounted, on average, to 30% of GPP. During most of the in situ sampling period, the coastal system (6–7 m depth) was found to be autotrophic, with depth-integrated GPP ranging from 6.7 mmoles O2 m−2 d−1 in December to 214.2 mmoles O2 m−2 d−1 in August, and CR ranging correspondingly from 6.0 to 177.7 mmoles O2 m−2 d−1. However, on some occasions heterotrophic conditions were recorded: depth-integrated GPP

Opis:
In the Baltic Sea, summer blooms of the filamentous, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena are favoured by high P concentrations at low N:P ratios and a salinity range of 5–13 PSU. The blooms are initiated by calm and sunny weather, an elevated surface water temperature and thermal stratification. The mass occurrence of N. spumigena in coastal waters is a matter of special concern, as the cyanobacterium produces nodularin, a potent pentapeptide hepatotoxin. In the Gulf of Gdańsk, the large-scale occurrence of N. spumigena was recorded for the first time in 1994. Blooms of a similar intensity occurred in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Nodularin concentrations in freeze-dried bloom samples varied from 0.01 to 4.01 mg g−1 d.w. In the coastal waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk, cell-bound nodularin concentrations in 2004 and 2005 attained maxima of 25 852±107 μg dm−3 and 3964±125 μg dm−3, respectively. Microscopic analysis revealed the presence of diverse Nodularia forms, with the dominance of curved filaments in bloom samples. The results of in situ studies and remote sensing measurements indicate a high frequency and intensity of cyanobacterial blooms in the Gulf of Gdańsk in the last ten years.

Opis:
The inherent optical properties (IOPs) of suspended particulate matter and their relations with the main biogeochemical characteristics of particles have been examined in the surface waters of the southern Baltic Sea. The empirical data were gathered at over 300 stations in open Baltic Sea waters as well as in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The measurements included IOPs such as the absorption coefficient of particles, absorption coefficient of phytoplankton, scattering and backscattering coefficients of particles, as well as biogeochemical characteristics of suspended matter such as concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM), particulate organic matter (POM), particulate organic carbon (POC) and chlorophyll a (Chl a). Our data documented the very extensive variability in the study area of particle concentration measures and IOPs (up to two orders of magnitude). Although most of the particle populations encoun- tered were composed primarily of organic matter (av. POM/SPM=ca 0.8), the different particle concentration ratios suggest that the particle composition varied significantly. The relations between the optical properties and biogeochemical parameters of suspended matter were examined. We found significant variability in the constituent-specific IOPs (coefficients of variation (CVs) of at least 30% to 40%, usually more than 50%). Simple best-fit relations between any given IOP versus any constituent concentration parameter also highlighted the significant statistical errors involved. As a result, we conclude that for southern Baltic samples an easy yet precise quantification of particle IOPs in terms of the concentration of only one of the following parameters – SPM, POM, POC or Chl a – is not achievable. Nevertheless, we present a set of best statistical formulas for a rough estimate of certain seawater constituent concentrations based on relatively easily measurable values of seawater IOPs. These equations can be implemented in practice, but their application will inevitably entail effective statistical errors of estimation of the order of 50% or more.
