    This work presents an attempt to analyse monastery-garden establishments present in selected Polish cities. The influence of the Order of Friar Minors on the cultural development, education and school system of selected cities is underappreciated. The whole composition of complexes apart from the cubature of the temple and monastery buildings were inherently gardens. Due to the beggarly character of the order their functioning was based on utilitarianism. Throughout centuries gardens were transformed - now with viridaria are an undeniably trace of tradition and heritage inscribing in the trend connected with Christian Europe. Currently, often with blurred composition, it is destined for different than original functions, dictated by contemporary needs.

    Opis:
    The main historic site, used presently in Białystok to build the city identity is the 18th century Branickis' residence called the Versailles of Poland. The Białystok authorities decided to undertake the complex conservation works in its garden. The aim of works is to bring this site to its former glory. The interdysciplinary conservation process has been started 15 years ago. It takes a course on different levels: the level of research, the level of design, the level of implementation and finally the level of information. In 2010 the conservation works in the area of avant court were finished. In 2011 the next part of the garden - the main parterre is expected to be open to the public.

    Opis:
    In the article's third part, the author addresses issues related to urban renewal and challenges faced by landscape architects involved in the process. A number of examples and approaches are reviewed, closing with the presentation of the Hannover. City as Garden project. Realised under EXPO 2000, it has implemented in an exemplary manner the principal postulates set forth in the Green Charter of European Cities. Parks created in the exhibition area follow similar principles: the northern part (Kienast, Vogt & Partners, Zurich), arranged with an emphasis on artificiality, stresses human involvement in the shaping of landscape while the southern part (designed by Kamel Louafi, Berlin) is more natural and constitutes an important element in the green ring surrounding the city.

    Today we are witnessing some sudden changes concerning the perception of the urban space in Poland. The social and spatial consequences of the processes of rapid and chaotic development and transformation of the cities during the last two decades have been thoroughly investigated and criticized by the specialists from the fields of architecture, sociology and philosophy, and even covered in some recent popular bestseller books. It is thus not an exaggeration to state that the quality of the urban space is becoming an increasingly important issue for many Poles. It is striking, however, that the mentioned scholarly work offers more criticism than positive, innovative solutions for the future. It seems to be concentrated more on the defense of the modernist architectural heritage, the preservation of modernist urban developments and inventing new functions for old modernist buildings than creating ideas for the urban spaces of the future. The local Silesian context seems to fit perfectly into this pattern.
    Jesteśmy współcześnie świadkami burzliwej debaty poświęconej przestrzeni miejskiej w naszym kraju. Jej efektem jest zarówno szeroka zmiana społeczna dotycząca postrzegania roli planowania miejskiego w codziennym życiu jak i intensywny rozkwit wyspecjalizowanego dyskursu w tej kwestii. Jakkolwiek, ten ostatni zdaje się zaskakująco często rozwijać w kierunku obrony modernistycznego dziedzictwa w architekturze i planowaniu miejskim przy równoczesnej krytyce rozwiązań współczesnych. Kontekst śląski nie jest w tej mierze odosobniony. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie roli jaką pełnią pre-modernistyczne i modernistyczne modele urbanistyczne w powstaniu i realizacji idei Katowic jako miasta – ogrodów.

    As a result of field survey and remote sensing of aerial photo and satellite imagery, a large archaeological site, probably belonging to the Sasanian period, was identified in Farāšband. This site covers an area of 14.4 square kilometers, very regular and walled, implanted on virgin land. The initial survey shows that it was probably a large geometric city consists of six large almost rectangular shape sections. Based on the archaeological evidence, this site has never been completed nor filled with population and had some gardens.

    Śródborów należał do podwarszawskich osiedli o charakterze letniskowo- -uzdrowiskowym, założonych przed 1939 r. wzdłuż linii Kolei Nadwiślańskiej w tzw. paśmie otwockim. W 1932 r. znalazł się w granicach miasta Otwocka. Artykuł nie tylko prezentuje odnaleziony przez autorkę nieznany i dotychczas niepublikowany plan miasta parku leśnego Śródborowa, autorstwa architekta Zdzisława Kalinowskiego, ale jest także próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy Śródborów urzeczywistniał ideę zapoczątkowaną w Anglii pod koniec XIX w. przez Ebenezera Howarda. Na podstawie powyższego planu (sporządzonego w 1922 r.) można stwierdzić, czy koncepcja osiedla została zrealizowana i w jakim stopniu, a także czy osiedle to zachowało do dzisiaj swój pierwotny kształt urbanistyczny i pierwotną zabudowę. W artykule zostały przedstawione zagadnienia historyczne, urbanistyczno-architektoniczne i krajobrazowe, opracowane na podstawie rozległych kwerend archiwalnych.
    The town of Śródborów was a summer settlement and health resort situated near Warsaw, established before 1939 along the Nadwiślańska Railway line in the so-called Otwock zone. In 1932 it was incorporated into the borders of the town of Otwock. The article not only presents the so far unknown and unpublished plan of the forest-park city of Śródborów designed by architect Zdzisław Kalinowski, discovered by the author, but it is also an attempt to answer the question whether Śródborów implemented the idea started in England at the end of the 19th century by Ebenezer Howard. On the basis of the above plan (drawn up in 1922) it can be concluded whether the concept of the the settlement was implemented and to what extent, as well as whether the settlement has retained its original urban shape and original development. The article presents historical, urban-architectural and landscape issues, conducted on the basis of extensive archival queries.

    The aim of the article is to present the method of horticultural therapy (gardening therapy) and its application in designing green areas using the example of the sensory garden at the “Światło” hospice in Toruń. The issue of horticultural therapy and its use in shaping green areas was raised due to the important role of greenery in human life (e.g. they absorb pollutants, produce oxygen, perform an insulating function) and the growing importance of horticultural therapy in the design of usable areas. The final effect of this research process is the design of a sensory garden based on horticultural therapy. The concept uses selected types of greenery which, through their properties, have a positive effect on the well-being and health of patients and, indirectly, the inhabitants of the entire city.
