    Opis:
    The article “The Origins of the Human Life in Patristic Comments” tries to show the richness of thoughts and ideas presented by various writers in the early times of Christianity. Their views dealt with the prenatal stadium of a human being. Among main matters concerning the beginning of the human life analyzed by first Christian writers were: time of animation (the moment of union of the body and soul), abortion, the status of the human embryo, pre-existence of the soul referring to the belief that each individual human soul exists before conception, the origin of the soul. Among these issues, very present and lively discussed in the communities of early Christians, we can also find the reflection concerning the embryonic stages of Christ’s life.

    Artykuł w sposób syntetyczny omawia wybrane filozoficzne i teologiczne interpretacje duszy, które pojawiły się w historii myśli ludzkiej od starożytności aż do czasów najnowszych. Artykuł z założenia ma charakter przeglądowy i stanowi wprowadzenie do szczegółowych opracowań dotyczących istnienia, genezy i natury duszy. W prezentacji kolejnych ujęć zastosowano kryterium chronologiczne: (1) Prehistoryczne i starożytne pozabiblijne ujęcia duszy, (2) Biblijne rozumienie duszy, (3) Patrystyczne koncepcje duszy, (4) Średniowieczne koncepcje duszy, (5) Nowożytne ujęcia duszy, (6) Współczesne ujęcia duszy, (7) Reinterpretacje duszy we współczesnej teologii katolickiej. Artykuł ukazuje historyczny rozwój poglądów o duszy, podkreśla zachodzące między nimi różnice i podobieństwa oraz opisuje nowe trendy w myśleniu o duszy.
    The paper briefly discusses selected philosophical and theological interpretations of the soul which have appeared throughout intellectual history, starting from antiquity and up until modern times. The paper is, by definition, a kind of general introduction to more detailed studies on the existence, origin and nature of the soul. Presenting a wide range of viewpoints, the author employs a chronological framework in order to show the historical development of the various views about the soul: (1) prehistoric and extra-biblical ancient concepts of the soul; (2) the biblical understanding of the soul; (3) patristic concepts of the soul; (4) medieval concepts of the soul; (5) modern concepts of the soul; (6) contemporary views on the soul; and (7) reinterpretations of the soul in present-day Catholic theology. Thus, in addition to highlighting the differences and similarities between the older, traditional formulations regarding the soul, the work also provides an overview of contemporary reinterpretations.

    Nauka Orygenesa na temat duszy, podobnie jak cała jego teologia, ma charakter hipotetyczno-poszukiwawczy. Przedmiotem artykułu jest wydobycie z jego dzieł i zebranie w całość najważniejszych idei dotyczących duszy rozumnej oraz jej roli w osobie ludzkiej. Orygenes umieszczał swoje rozważania na temat antropologii w kontekście chrześcijańskiego życia duchowego, nie traktował ich natomiast jako rozróżnienia czysto filozoficzne, chociaż nawiązywał do filozofii średniego platonizmu i Filona Aleksandryjskiego. Przeprowadzona analiza porównawcza tekstów Orygenesa, zachowanych w greckim oryginale lub wczesnochrześcijańskich łacińskich przekładach, uwypukla główne tematy jego duchowej antropologii: trychotomiczny podział struktury osoby ludzkiej, przypisywanie kategorii obrazu Boga w człowieku duszy rozumnej oraz dążenie duszy do pełnego poddania się Duchowi Świętemu, czyli osiągnięcia stanu doskonałego podobieństwa do Boga. W świetle wypowiedzi Orygenesa dusza rozumna, zwana także umysłem, sercem i zasadą przewodnią, jest istotnym elementem strukturalnym osoby ludzkiej, tożsamym z obrazem Bożym w człowieku. W życiu ziemskim toczy ona walkę duchową przeciw pożądliwościom ciała, usiłując podporządkować całego człowieka duchowi, a za jego pośrednictwem Duchowi Świętemu.
    Origen’s teaching about the soul, like all his theology, is hypothetical-exploratory. The goal of the article is to extract and gather together the key concepts from Origen’s works dealing with the rational soul and its role in the human person. Origen placed his considerations on anthropology in the context of Christian spiritual life, but he did not treat them as purely philosophical distinctions, despite referring to the philosophy of Middle Platonism and Philo of Alexandria. The comparative analysis of Origen’s texts, as preserved in the original Greek or early Christian Latin translations, highlights the main themes of his spiritual anthropology: the trichotomous division of the structure of the human person; ascribing the category of the “image of God” in man to a rational soul; and the soul’s striving to fully surrender to the Holy Spirit, i.e. to achieve a state of perfect likeness to God. In the light of Origen’s statements, the rational soul – also known as the mind, heart, and guiding principle – is an essential structural element of the human person, identical to the image of God in man. In earthly life, she wages a spiritual battle against the desires of the flesh, trying to subordinate the whole person to the spirit, and, through it, to the Holy Spirit.

    The article presents the concept of alienation of a soul in a body present in the literature of Polish Baroque. The sources discussed in the article include: emblematic works, religious poetry, essays, scientific and religious treaties, popular compendia of knowledge. The article covers the following issues: 1) the imagery of a soul trapped in a body as presented in religious poetry; 2) the concepts of alienation of a soul in a body inspired by Cartesian philosophy; 3) the rejection of the dualism of body and soul in the Baroque trend of Aristotelian and Thomistic anthropology.

    Artykuł zatytułowany Astrologia, chiromancja i metoposkopia jako uzupełnienie fizjonomicznego obrazu duszy w filozofii Marin Cureau de La Chambre’a, ma na celu zaprezentowanie poglądów mało znanego w Polsce lekarza i filozofa francuskiego. Żyjący i tworzący w wieku siedemnastym de La Chambre jest przedstawicielem filozofii  pokartezjańskiej. Jego opracowania dotyczą fizjonomicznego obrazu psychiki ludzkiej. Artykuł ukazuje skrótowo treść głównych dzieł tego autora, do których zalicza się Les Characteres des passions, t. 1–4, Paris 1662 oraz L'art de connoistre les hommes, Amsterdam 1660. To w tych książkach uczony prezentuje zasady poznania ludzi, wynikłe z połączenia wiedzy lekarskiej oraz analizy emocji w człowieku. W drugiej części artykuł przybliża treść dwóch utworów o charakterze listów, które de La Chambre dołączył do L'art de connoistre les hommes. Są nimi: Discours sur les principes de la chiromance (Rozprawa o zasadach chiromancji oraz Discours sur les principes de la metoposcopie (Rozprawa o zasadach metoposkopii). Uczony bada przydatność tych pseudo-nauk dla celów medycyny tak, aby wraz z fizjonomiką, mogły zasilić niezbędną wiedzę nie tylko o zachowaniu ludzi, ale o cechach ich charakteru, jak również przeznaczeniu w odniesieniu do zapadalności na różne choroby. Artykuł przedstawia mniej popularną i mniej znaną część wiedzy z zakresu rozwoju pokartezjańskiej filozofii medycznej we Francji wieku siedemnastego.
    The article entitled: Astrology, Palmistry and Metoposcopy as a Complement to the Physiognomic Image of the Soul in the Philosophy of Marin Cureau de La Chambre aims to present the views of a little-known French doctor and philosopher in Poland. Living and creating in seventeenth century, de La Chambre is a representative of post-Cartesian philosophy. His studies concern the physiognomic image of the human psyche. The article briefly presents the content of the main works of this author, which include Les Characteres des passions, vols. 1–4, Paris1662 and L'art de connoistre les hommes, Amsterdam 1660. It is in these books that the scholar presents the principles of getting to know people, resulting from the combination of medical knowledge and the analysis of emotions in a person. In the second part, the article presents the content of two letters that de La Chambre attached to L'art de connoistre les hommes. These are: Discours sur les principes de la chiromance (Dissertation on the principles of palmistry) and Discours sur les principes de la metoposcopie (Dissertation on the principles of metoposcopy). The scientist studies the utility of these pseudo-sciences for the purposes of medicine so that, together with physiognomy, they can replenish the necessary knowledge not only about the behavior of people, but about the traits of their character, as well as the fate with reference to the incidence of various diseases. The article presents a less popular and familiar part of the knowledge in the field of the development of post-Cartesian medical philosophy in France in the seventeenth century.

    In seventh chapter of his On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy Pseudo Dionysius the Areopagite treats on the ceremony of burial. While explaining the rites he makes a few remarks on the Christian understanding of the body and its fate after death, and how it is inconsistent with some pagan views on the matter. He discusses several opposite statements of the complete disintegration of the body, metempsychosis and seeing the life of the body after death exactly like the life on earth (On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy VII 3, 1). This polemic is pointed against Neoplatonic philosophers who held such opinions, and to understand the difference between pagan and Christian view on the matter, the second part of the article considers the Neoplatonic view of the life after death. At Neoplatonic schools there were a different opinions of whether the embodiment is good or rather damaging to the intellectual soul. Philosophers like Plotinus and Porphyry explained descend of the soul as being evil, while Iamblichus and Damaskios thought otherwise. However there were points in which Neoplatonics were completely in agreement. All of them admitted that the happiness of the soul after death is possible only without the material body, and that the soul can reincarnate. Analysis of Neoplatonic view shows that the negative approach to the body is not the feature that could be ascribed to all Late Greek philosophers. Pseudo-Dionysius sees the problem in the Christian perspective. The soul at the moment of death does not loose completely the connection with the body and thus death does not mean the dissolution of the substance. However the new body that will be given to believers after resurrection will not be exactly the same with the earthly one.
