freemartinism - Opis:
- This article aims at presenting an important issue in animal fertility. XX/XY chimerism occurs in various animal species and also in humans. It may arise as early form, resulting from polygametic fertilization or embryonic fusion leading to development of two or more cellular lines in multiple tissues, among them in genital organs. Later, blood chimerism may be secondary to placental anastomoses. If based on the exchange of blood between fetuses of different sexes, it can be associated with developmental disorders of the internal and external genitalia, especially in females, which is called freemartinism. As a result of the influence of male sex hormones from a twin fetus, disorders of sex development (DSD), appear in the form of underdevelopment or intersexuality in female. In male fetuses the influence of the admixture of female blood is usually less pronounced, although various morphological and functional abnormalities have been described. Nowadays, modern molecular diagnostic methods are available, that allow for early and precise detection of cellular chimerism and prognosis of the fertility potential.
