The contemporary study of careers requires taking into consideration multicontextual changes in the world of work, which make individuals face new challenges. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the numerous transformations taking place in the contemporary reality, including in the world of work, which influence people’s professional career, the significance attributed to it and the success achieved through it. This article presents the results of own research concerning career success as perceived from the perspective of academic students from Poland. Particular attention was paid to two aspects of this issue: its objective and subjective nature, as well as the assessment of own chances for achieving it within one’s career path. The results of the studies prove, that the surveyed youth perceives success in a career in a subjective manner, but that its objective dimension is also important for the academic students, and that the vast majority take a positive attitude towards their own professional future. The resulting empirical material may carry important implications for the educational practice.

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the numerous transformations taking place in the contemporary reality, including the world of work, which influence people’s professional career and the success achieved through it. This article presents the results of own research concerning career success as perceived from the perspective of young people. The studies were conducted among academic students and students of vocational school complexes using the diagnostic survey method, which involved the survey technique and the questionnaire survey tool. Within them, particular attention was paid to two aspects of this issue: its objective and subjective nature, as well as the assessment of own chances for achieving it within one’s career path. The results of the studies prove that the surveyed youth perceives success in a career to a large extent in a subjective manner and that the vast majority take a positive attitude towards their own professional future. The resulting empirical material may carry important implications for the educational practice. It shows, what skills and knowledge should be taught to young people preparing them to enter the labour market.

Aim: Under the supervision of the Department of General and Vascular Surgery of Poznan University of Medical Sciences, a questionnaire was distributed online or as a paper version to medical students (MSs) in order to better understand the attitudes towards surgery as a specialty and to determine the reasons why students do and do not choose vascular surgery as their career path. Materials and methods: The questionnaire was distributed online or as a paper version to MSs in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th year of the PUMS 6-year M.D. program. It provided the data on the year of study, grade point average (GPA), sex, age, respondent’s specialty choice, 33 questions with responses on a 1-5 Likert scale (1 was the least important reason and 5 was the most important reason), and 2 questions with socres between 0 and 4. A total of 136 Polish MSs of PUMS completed the survey. Results: For MSs who choose vascular surgery as their career path, “endovascular capabilities of vascular surgery” and “higher income possibilities than a general surgeon” were the most important reasons. The “poor availability of work in other places than the vascular surgery department of your choice, few such clinics in the region” was the most important reason not to choose vascular surgery. A role of gender was also noted - 13% of male MSs classified gender as an “important factor”, in contrast to 60% of female MSs. Conclusions: The findings of this study might help to develop better strategies to attract future trainees to surgical specialties, particularly vascular surgery, and improve work environment.

Due to constantly transforming socio-economic reality as well as the difficulty of entering and surviving the labour market, which are the factors related to nonlinear character of contemporary carriers, the increasing number of people feel apprehensive about their chances to construct their present and future lives. Therefore, it is little wonder that in recent years the growth in demand for helping activities has been clearly discernible in most countries in the world. Supporting people’s efforts to construct their carriers at different stages of their lives is becoming one of the key tasks of present vocational guidance, which is more and more often (also in Poland) referred to as career counselling. This assignment makes the specialists dealing with helping people to construct their careers increasingly engaged in constant developing and adjusting the forms and ways of their assistance activities for continuously diversifying needs of their clients. On the other hand, it still remains important to answer the question of what the very notion of ‘career’ means to counselling investigators, practitioners and advice-seekers. In this article the author tries to give answers to the following questions: How is the term ‘career’ currently defined? What counselling measures are offered by counselling specialists? To answer the above questions the author shows the transformation of contemporary careers and outlines chosen theories of career counselling, especially the concepts of kaleidoscope career by Lisa A. Maniero and Sherry E. Sullivan, boundaryless career by Michael B. Arthur and Denise M. Rousseau, protean career by D.T. Hall and the model of intelligent career by Michael B. Arthur, Priscilla H. Calman and Roberta DeFillippi.

The purpose of this article is to describe the perception of time by men and women in managerial positions in business organizations (and the specific actions resulting from that perception). The differences and similarities in perceiving time by representatives of the two sexes were reconstructed on the basis of nearly fifty narrative interviews conducted within the framework of two projects: ’The Temporal Aspect of Managerial Careers’ (concluded in 2005) and the ongoing ’Spatial Aspect of Managerial Careers’. In the context of the titular gender perspective, what is noteworthy is the vision of their careers that organizational actors’ declare and realize, in that they perceive them, despite the contradictions resulting from the gender difference, as being planned and realized through persistence.Key categories describing this type of attitude are those of the ’self-made man’ and ’self-made woman’. Differences in ways of realizing the ideal of the inner-directed manager, which are the effect of a culturally conditioned perception of the role that men and women ’should’ fill, are also important. Niniejszy artykuł dotyka problematyki wzorów prowadzenia karier akademickich przez osoby wywodzące się z klas ludowych, która to tematyka w polskiej przestrzeni badawczej nie była dotychczas eksplorowana. Podstawowym źródłem danych w niniejszym artykule są narracyjne wywiady biograficzne z pracownikami dydaktyczno-badawczymi polskich uczelni, urodzonymi po 1980 r., którzy, wywodząc się z rodzin o skromnych tradycjach intelektualnych oraz deficytowych kapitałach społecznych, kulturowych i ekonomicznych, zdołali z powodzeniem wejść w świat akademicki. Autorki, opierając się na zebranych danych, próbują uchwycić czynniki wpływające na kariery naukowe tych osób. Główną tezą niniejszego artykułu jest stwierdzenie, że przebieg kariery akademickiej i szanse osiągnięcia sukcesu w świecie nauki zależne są od zróżnicowanych czynników, związanych i niezwiązanych z jednostką: indywidualnych talentów, kompetencji i predyspozycji psychospołecznych, zewnętrznych uwarunkowań, np. legislacyjnych, technologicznych czy kategorii społeczno-demograficznych, takich jak pochodzenie klasowe, zmiany pokoleniowe, płeć.
This article addresses the issue of the patterns of pursuing academic careers by people with working-class backgrounds, a topic that has not been explored by Polish researchers so far. The analysis was based on narrative biographical interviews with the academic staff of Polish universities born after 1980, who, despite coming from families with modest intellectual traditions and scarce social, cultural, and economic capital, managed to enter the academic world successfully. Based on the collected data, we try to identify the factors influencing their academic careers. The main point of this article is that the course of an academic career and the chances of achieving success in the world of science depend on diverse factors. They are both dependent on and independent of an individual, and range from: 1) individual talents, competencies, and psychosocial predispositions; 2) external conditions, e.g. legislative, technological, etc.; and 3) socio-demographic categories such as class background, generational changes, and gender.
