Opis:
With the International Energy Agency (IEA) projecting that the global demand for natural gas to increase by 50% from 2010 to 2035, the exploration of unconventional gas reserves (e.g. shale gas, tight gas and coal bed methane) will gain increasing importance as conventional gas reserves become more depleted. To enhance the production of unconventional gas and oil, water-based fracturing fluids are extensively used for the stimulation of North American shale plays because they are inexpensive and offer excellent proppant transport into the fracture when used with gelled polymers. However, in circumstances where water-based fracturing fluids are unsuitable due to concerns related to water sensitivity and clay swelling, alternative fracturing fluids are used such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide treatments. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide fracturing fluids are particularly advantageous in depleted and shallow formations because they offer a non-damaging effect around the fracture, rapid cleanup of flowback fluid, and reduced water requirements compared to conventional water-based fracturing fluids. Much research has been published about water-based fracture treatments, therefore, this review paper considers the use of nitrogen and carbon dioxide fracturing fluids used for the stimulation of unconventional shale plays, mainly in North America. By analysing selected literatures studies, this review paper summarises the utilization of the various types of nitrogen and carbon dioxide treatments (i.e. straight gas, foam, energized, cryogenic liquids) across various shale plays such as the Montney play, the Devonian play, and the Marcellus play. The paper further identifies the major benefits and challenges of nitrogen and carbon dioxide treatments documented by well operators, which will facilitate knowledge transfer about the applicability of nitrogen and carbon dioxide fracturing fluids.

The paper shows the possibility of using chlorophyll-synthesizing microalgae of Chlorella vulgaris to purify biogas from carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3). Experimental dependences of the dynamics of CO2 uptake by microalgae under the action of H2S inhibitor and NH3 activator were presented. A mathematical description of the growth of biomass of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, depending on the concentration of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, was obtained. The optimal values of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia concentration for the efficient process of carbon dioxide uptake by chlorophyll-synthesizing microalgae Chlorella vulgaris from biomethanization gas were established.

The suppression of the inhibition effect by SO2 sulfur dioxide with the simultaneous action of two activators – P2O5 phosphorus oxide and NxOy nitrogen oxide, as well as the process of carbon dioxide absorption by chlorophyll-synthesizing microalgae Chlorella were studied in this work. The experimental dependences of the СО2 uptake dynamics by microalgae under the conditions of the SO2 inhibitor critical concentration action and the simultaneous presence of P2O5 and NxOy activators were shown. A mathematical description of the Chlorella microalgae biomass growth depending on the P2O5 and NxOy activators concentration, provided that there is a SO2 inhibitor constant concentration was obtained. The optimum values of the P2O5 phosphorus oxide and NxOy nitrogen oxides concentration at the SO2 inhibitor critical concentration for the carbon dioxide absorption by chlorophyll-synthesizing microalgae Chlorella process were established.

Peatland is a significant storage of carbon and nitrogen on the earth’s surface. This paper reviews the impacts of changes in water table level and mineral nitrogen associated with human activities on greenhouse gases emissions in tropical peatland and northern boreal and temperate peatland, and evaluates the optimal water table level to minimize greenhouse gases emissions. CH4 emission increased significantly with the rise of ground water table level above -20 cm, and larger in northern peatland with plant mediated CH4 emission than tropical peatland with plant mediated oxygen supply. However, forest disturbance by fire in tropical peatland increased CH4 flux to the similar level in northern peatlands (8.3 mg C m-2 h-1) due to stagnant surface water associated with the peat subsidence. On the other hand, CO2 and N2O emissions were significantly lager in tropical peatland than in northern peatland especially due to nitrogen fertilization. CO2 and N2O emissions increased with falling ground water table level below -40 to -80 cm (19 Mg C ha-1 y-1 for CO2 and 700 kg N ha-1 y-1 for N2O). Total global warming potential was significantly low in the ground water table level from -20 and -40 cm.

Opis:
Methane concentrations in natural gases accumulated in the Lower and Upper Badenian and Lower Sarmatian reservoirs of the Bilche-Volytsia Unit in the western part of the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep usually exceed 96 vol%. Methane was generated by microbial reduction of carbon dioxide in the marine environment. Microbial methane and ethane were produced mainly during sedimentation of Miocene clays and muds. It is possible that this microbial process continues today. Higher light hydrocarbons (ethane in part, and mainly propane, butanes and pentanes) were generated during the diagenesis and the initial stage of the low-temperature, thermogenic processes from Type III and III/II kerogen deposited in Miocene strata and/or Middle and Upper Jurassic basement rocks. Limited variations in the values of geochemical hydrocarbon indices and stable isotope ratios of methane, ethane and propane with the depth indicate similar gas generation conditions within the whole Miocene succession. The microbial gases (methane and partly ethane) generated during microbial processes within the Miocene strata later migrated to the Upper Jurassic and the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) reservoirs of the Mesozoic basement, and to the bottommost Lower Badenian reservoirs of the analysed Letnia, Orkhovychi, Rudky and Vereshchytsia fields. The low hydrogen concentrations within the Miocene strata as well as within the Upper Jurassic and the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian) reservoirs of the Mesozoic basement, and within the bottommost Lower Badenian reservoirs are also related to microbial processes. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which are common minor constituents, were generated by both microbial and low-temperature thermogenic processes. Moreover, CO2 also underwent secondary processes, mainly dissolution in water, during migration. At least part of the nitrogen accumulated in the Rudky field, which is remarkably high in N2 (96.9 vol%), is probably of atmospheric origin and was introduced to the reservoir by secondary recovery methods.

In order to provide a better characterization of the origin and volume of thermogenic gas generation hydrous pyrolysis (HP) experiments were performed on coals and shales at 330 and 360oC for 72 hours. The maturity range of coals and shales used for HP varies from 0.57 to 0.92% Ro. The maturity increase caused by HP at 330 and 360oC ranges from 1.32 to 1.39% and from 1.71 to 1.83%, respectively. δ13C of CH4, 2H6, C3H6 and n-C4H10 in HP gases versus their reciprocal C-number have a concave relationship, and therefore do not follow a linear trend. δ2H of CH4, 2H6 and C3H6 in HP gases versus their reciprocal H-number show both linear and convex-concave relationships. The growth of CO2 yields during HP was higher for shales than for coals. H2S yields from shales are higher than from coals, which can be connected with catalytic and adsorbed influence of shale matrix. H2 was also generated in notable quantities from water and organic matter of coals and bigger amounts from shales. N2 yields grow with the increase of Ro after 3oC HP and it is more enriched in 15N isotope than after 330C.

The vertical profiles of phosphate, total CO2 and oxygen/hydrogen sulphide were determined in the deep water of the Gotland Sea during March 2003 to July 2006 with a temporal resolution of 2–3 months. This time span included the shift from anoxic to oxic conditions resulting from a water renewal event, as well as the transition back to anoxic waters during the subsequent two-year stagnation period. The data from depths below 150 m were used to identify and quantify phosphate release and removal processes. The relationship between the total CO2 generated by mineralization (CT1 min) and the PO4 concentrations indicated that the initial decrease in the phosphate concentrations after the inflow of oxygen-rich water was mainly a dilution effect. Only about one third of the PO4 removal was a consequence of the precipitation of insoluble iron-3-hydroxo-phosphates (Fe-P), which occurred slowly at the sediment surface under oxic conditions. From the CT1 min/PO4 ratios it was also concluded that the formation of Fe-P was reversed during the later phase of the stagnation, when the redoxcline approached a depth of 150 m. A phosphate mass balance was performed for four deep water sub-layers in order to quantify the dissolution of Fe-P during the stagnation period and thus to estimate the amount of Fe-P deposited during the last inflow of oxygen-rich water. A value of about 50 mmol-P m−2 was found, which refers to the specific biogeochemical conditions during the change from anoxic to oxic conditions that preceded the stagnation period.

Methane concentrations in natural gases accumulated in the autochthonous Miocene strata of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep (between Kraków and Przemyśl) usually exceeded 90 vol%. Methane and part of the ethane were generated during microbial reduction of carbon dioxide in the marine environment, mainly during the sedimentation of Miocene clays and muds. It is possible that this microbial process has continued even recently. Higher light hydrocarbons (mainly propane, butanes and pentanes) were generated during the diagenesis and the initial stage of the low-temperature thermogenic process. Very small changes in the values of geochemical hydrocarbon indices and stable isotope ratios of methane, ethane and propane with depth are evidence for similar gas generation conditions within the whole Badenian and Lower Sarmatian successions. Only in a few natural gas accumulations within the Upper Badenian and Lower Sarmatian reservoirs are thermogenic gases or thermogenic components present, both generated from mixed, type III/II kerogen. These thermogenic gases, now accumulated mainly in the bottom part of Miocene strata, probably resulted from thermogenic processes in the Palaeozoic– Mesozoic basement and then migrated to the Miocene strata along the fault zones. The presence of low hydrogen concentrations (from 0.00 to 0.26 vol%) within the Miocene strata is related to recent microbial processes. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which are common minor constituents, were generated in both microbial and low-temperature thermogenic processes. However, CO2 has also undergone secondary processes, mainly dissolution in water during migration. Hydrogen sulphide, which occurs in natural gases of Lower Badenian strata, was most probably generated during microbial sulphate reduction of the Lower Badenian gypsum and anhydrites.

Reducing air pollutant emissions and energy consumption, as a necessary step to make ports more sustainable, is one of the crucial tasks and challenges of port management. Some of the port strategies to meet the term “green port” usually include reducing fuel consumption from vessels and vehicles in ports. This paper estimates the emission inventory of maritime traffic for the cargo Port of Zadar. For this research, emissions from cargo ships are estimated in the period from January 01. 2018 until October 01. 2019. The “bottom-up” methodology has been applied for estimating emissions, which includes detailed data on the ship’s characteristics (engine power, the load factor, fuel type, the emission factor) and time spent cruising and hotelling. The emissions from cargo ships have been estimated for three ship’s activities: cruising in the reduced speed zone, hotelling (time spent at berth), and maneuvering. The emission results (tons/year) refer to the pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and carbon dioxide (CO2) which represents greenhouse gases. Estimating emission inventory is the first step for planning effective port air quality control. Some recommendations for reducing emissions in port areas are emphasized in this paper.

Opis:
Przeprowadzona analiza regresji wielokrotnej pozwoliła określić wpływ parametrów technologicznych (temperatura, stężenie czynnika zgazowującego) na uzyskane wartości ciepła spalania i wartości opałowej otrzymanego gazy syntezowego.
One of the methods of sewage sludge management may be its gasification with prior torrefaction. Simulation results of gasification of the carbonized sewage sludge obtained in the process of torrefaction were presented. Modeling of the carbonized sludge gasification process was performed in temperatures ranging from 973 K to 1473 K with air applied as a gasifying agent. Ten simulations were performed at each temperature, during which the molar ratio of oxygen to carbon (O/C) was varied. The results showed that the carbonized sludge obtained by torrefaction for 60 min at 533 K allowed for production of syngas with the highest heating value (16.44 MJ/m3) at gasification temperature of 973 K and the molar ratio O/C=0.1. Multiple regression analysis allowed for determination of statistical significance of technological parameters (temperature, concentration of gasifying agent) on both the lower heating value (LHV) and the higher heating value (HHV) of syngas produced. The obtained results demonstrated that a variable that significantly influenced the gasification process was the gasification agent concentration. With its increase, the fuel properties of syngas deteriorated. There were no more significant changes in calorific value of the obtained syngas with the increase in temperature, therefore temperature was the technological parameter considered to affect the process in a less significant manner.

This work presents a one-dimensional simulation of the seasonal changes in CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). The results of the model were constrained using data from observations, which improved the model’s ability to estimate nitrogen fixation in the central Baltic Sea and allowed the impact of nitrogen fixation on the ecological state of the Baltic Sea to be studied. The model used here is the public domain water-column model GOTM (General Ocean Turbulence Model), which in this study was coupled with a modifed Baltic Sea ecosystem model, ERGOM (The Baltic Sea Research Institute’s ecosystem model). To estimate nitrogen fixation rates in the Gotland Sea, the ERGOM model was modified by including an additional cyanobacteria group able to fix nitrogen from March to June. Furthermore, the model was extended by a simple CO2 cycle. Variable C:P and N:P ratios, controlled by phosphate concentrations in ambient water, were used to represent cyanobacteria, detritus and sediment detritus. This approach improved the model’s ability to reproduce sea-surface phosphate and pCO2 dynamics. The resulting nitrogen fixation rates in 2005 for the two simulations, with and without the additional cyanobacteria group, were 259 and 278 mmol N m−2 year−1 respectively.
