Opis:
This article demonstrates how sex segregation is still present in the canon of Western literature in the 21st century. It draws on the historical roots of the belief that male literature is qualitatively better than female literature and analyzes the various ways in which this view is reproduced by the canon and canon formation itself. The argument is based on a statistical survey of several lists trying to present the “best novel” or “works of fiction” that were published around the turn of the millennium, both those prepared by readers as well as by critics and authors, and it takes note of the tendency of people from the literary establishment to neglect female authorship. A survey of how male and female authors are categorized on the Wikipedia is also included. The article then focuses on such problematic issues as dismissing works written by women as popular and the role the publishing industry plays in this practice.

Opis:
Tą drogą powstawały m.in. biblioteki kapitulne.
Chapters of canons also today contribute to the preservation and creation of human and, above all, Christian culture. A significant factor in the preservation and creation of the aforementioned cultural heritage is the chapter libraries, which were established similarly to the book collections of the vast majority of religious congregations. The Catholic Church has always recommended embracing science to its priests. Chapter libraries, among others, were built in this very spirit. The law of the provincial synod in Piotrków in 1589, recommending the establishment of libraries at cathedrals, was only a reminder to Polish chapters, as they already had their libraries by then. The subject of this article is to present the institution of the canonical library in the Canon Law aspect. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that chapter libraries are undoubtedly a valuable aid and intellectual resource for canons to carry out their tasks in liturgical worship and teaching. The existence of chapter libraries has its consistent canonical legitimacy, especially in the provisions of chapter statutes. Such a defined research intention was realized through a thorough search of the existing Canon Law, especially the statutes of the canonical chapters. The analysis of the listed sources made it possible to achieve specific scientific objectives. First, the author’s canonical definition of the chapter library and its goals and objectives were constructed. Second, the fundamental issue of library resources was discussed. Third, the canonical obligation for chapters to have their own library was resolved.

Judaism has never recognized Tobit as a canonical book, perhaps because of its roots in the northern Israel. Its reflections in the New Testament are scarce. Ancient Christian witnesses are usually favorable to the canonicity of the book of Tobit. It is present in many ancient biblical manuscripts (a, B, A, more then 30 minuscules). It was quoted by at least 79 authors, by many as Scripture. Some canon lists include it, other ones does not – when they are influenced by the Jewish canon. Some authors who failed to list Tobit in the canon have quoted it as Scripture. Accordingly, arguments for the canonicity prevail. Later ages accepted Tobit as canonical book. Protestants, despite some initial positive interest, have eliminated it. Tobit is canonical in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. It contains valuable teachings, especially on family and marriage – it is the only biblical book concentrated on these subjects.

It has long been known which books were read most widely throughout enlightened Europe and to which intellectual authorities particular social groups referred. After the long history of research about the 18th century, modernity has also inherited various research habits consisting mainly of constant verification of the recognised hierarchy of authors, publications, and actors of intellectual life. However, the question remains: how to study this literary culture in given continent areas? Speaking of literary culture, we mean the prevailing patterns in the reception, evaluation, assimilation and imitation of literature, information and evaluation channels, local conditions that have a decisive influence on choices and opinions. The author proposes to speak about this matter based on the recently completed work on literary culture in French-speaking Switzerland in the 18th century. Despite its specificity and evident provincialism, this example provides material for a general, theoretical and methodological reflection: is it worth researching production from the second (and further) shelf? If so, how should this material be approached? What does it tell us about the evaluation procedures? The article presents and analyses these issues.

This essay aims to interconnect the aspects of canon, cultural musicology, music and language with the systematic category of dispositif. In a short overview on the disciplinary canon debate, the essay describes the idea of a musical canon and questions its methodological status in musicology. The conclusion is that (aesthetic) value judgements are to be rejected as scientific (consequently rational or intersubjectively reasonable) selection criteria. The second argument draws on Lawrence Kramer’s notion of “constructive description”, which addresses the relation of music and language and helps in understanding the canon as a specific historical agency of different overlapping discourses. In order to outline an integrative ontology for the epistemological interest of cultural musicology, the last section synthesises these arguments in the Foucauldian idea of dispositif.

The article is an attempt of describing the relation of a philosophical tale as a genre to the canon. It is characterized as (de)canonization: on the one hand the story fights with the existing canon by means of satire, on the other – by such negative references and ironically using the satire against itself – builds it. Such ambivalence, hidden in the structure of realizing the genre – which was shown on the example of stories by Jerzy Szaniawski – is inscribed into the author’s attitude – hermeneutic openness and supporting soft truths.

In 16th–17th-century’s liturgical books one can find numerous additions regarded as redundant and optional. These paratextual elements are: verbal (e.g., prefaces, dedicational verses or letters, afterwords, introductions), iconic (schemas, illustrations) and both combined. Unnecessary materials in printed liturgiarions apart from the above-mentioned are: teachings of Jan Chrysostom, Basil the Great and Gregory Dialogos – the authors of Divine Liturgy and the short eulogistic compositions about Church Fathers, sometimes accompanied by their images. These additional elements are great evidence of development of liturgical practice, documents certifying intellectual level of Ruthenian clergy and renovating ambitions of hierarchy. For this reason, they should be widely considered as worthy sources in the study about religion reform in the Metropolitanate of Kiev and of a church culture in old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Modern architecture is built on such diverse values as individualism and conformism, technocracy and technophobia, pragmatism and irrationalism, and by and large - chaos and diversity, the desire for order and the search for the new and non-traditional solutions. The emergence of new style trends today is often done according to the principle of opposition - in response to the universally established style, new style, contrary to latter, in terms of values and aesthetic sense is born. At the same time, a specific emotional climate is created in the architecture system - the environment in which people live and act. This environment is always in a state of dynamics, adjustment and tension. At the same time, it is a holistic aesthetic reality, which is perceived in a certain way by man in all its diversity of contradictions. Referring from this position to the questions of the correlation of system and chaos, orderliness and diversity in architecture, it must be noted that this problem is one of those to which constantly sustain interest in the community of architects, art historians and artists. Today, on the one hand, we see a rejection of artistic traditions in architecture, and on the other hand, there is resurgence of interest in them. In these conditions, the problem of preservation of traditional values, and the synthesis of tradition and innovation in the process of architectural creativity, becomes very urgent.

Opis:
The article discusses the existence and functioning of the notion of canon in the social consciousness after 1989 in the context of Polish prose of the last twenty years. It points to two semantic circles connected with this notion: the first circle refers to literature and culture of the nation deeply rooted in tradition and confined in the past. The second circle is of polysemous character and refers to the contemporary literature and culture. The deliberations concentrate on the second semantic circle as the notion of national literature, the necessity of its existence in the nation and passing it to the next generations are undisputable. In the Polish culture after 1989, the notion of canons appears more often than the notion of a canon. The notion refers to phenomena that frequently exist on the border of literature, culture, and social life. For those phenomena, it builds canonical sets of texts defined and perceived as important and constitutive for their authors, and obligatory for their recipients. It becomes the vehicle for new literary qualities at the level of formal, thematic and problematic transformations. It is also a phenomenon that functions in the space of a particular culture and tradition with which it evolves.

Comparative studies of the Bible and the sacred texts of adjacent nations have a rich tradition, but research generally focuses on comparing passages of the biblical text with adequate sacral texts of adjacent nations. However, this approach involves two problems: 1* difference of religious status - the Bible is a living reality, whereas the sacral texts of other ancient nations of the Near East are only relics; 2* form of the writings - the Bible is a uniform work, modified by the conscious acts of communities of faith while the writings of adjacent nations survive to our times only in fragments. The article takes off from a different comparatistic conception. My primary concern is not so much to bring out the similarities or discrepancies between Bible passages and adequate sacral texts of adjacent nations but rather to show the whole canon of the holy scriptures of Israel against the backdrop of the sacred writings of the Region. The comparison is built on two assumptions: 1 * origin and usage; 2* addressee of the text. Therefore, it does not refer to the question of literary genres but first and foremost to the dependencies between the text and the community.

One of them was quite successful, but it is forgotten today; the other is remembered to this day and often mentioned in the context of 1990s art even though it was censored back then. Showing the relations between censorship and discourses of otherness the paper reflects on different political possibilities inscribed in the history of transition.

Opis:
A canon is a word of religious origin. It constituted a basic aim of education at the university level. However, that time came to an end when the idea of universality was replaced with the idea of perfection (implicitly a clerk-like perfection). Ressentiment (a repressed feeling, described by Nietzsche and later by Scheler) acts against a higher ability to enjoy cultural pleasure; it creates a contemporary human as a man of labour and utility who cannot make use of the so-called cultural assets (from the canon). Depending on which field the idea of a canon refers to, we will understand it as such. It is most associated with art where it functions as a set of models, rules and methods of creation current in a given period of culture. There are three semantic fields of the background needed to examine the notion of a canon: culture, time and space (I dedicated two chapters of the paper to each). Today, a humanist has completely new roles, since not only did culture change but also time and space – the basic “forms of sensuality”, which Kant defined as our main point of orientation and a ground for thinking about the world. Coping with the canon was mainly intended to teach good choices, not only the choices regarding texts. It may be the most important mission of humanists: to show the canon and teach how to choose one of our own. Now we are observing a kind of fear of the canon (Bloom). We are irritated with what we cannot understand. The biggest load of ressentiment lies within society, in which social equality, both political and formal, goes hand in hand with very large discrepancies in terms of actual power, wealth and education. Today, humanist reflection on culture even left the political level, related to knowledge, and entered a lower, more fundamental level connected with satisfying basic needs. The only role of a contemporary “humanist” is to free themself of illusions, i.e. also of the excess of texts. Our globalised space is ruled by quick rankings and summaries of texts. We lost the need to which art responded – to determine the eternal perspective of life.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the role modern apocrypha play in the processes of collective remembering. From the perspective of cultural studies the modern apocrypha can be seen not only as literary or religious texts but also as an important element of cultural autocommunication. And if we understand autocommunication as a crucial mechanism of cultural memory, we can describe intertextuality (which is a form of cultural autocommunication) as an autoimmune technique of preventing the basic cultural meanings from the oblivion. The canon is a basic tool of collective memory in the so called ‘literate cultures’ or ‘Cultures of the Book’. That is the reason why the apocrypha, which deal with canonical contents, build the unique set of texts playing an essential role in protecting the source myth and tradition from the ‘semiotic death’.

This paper deals with the current debates as whether literary canon or classical works are destined to fall into oblivion or survive. The American literary critic Harold Bloom is very pessimistic about the future of literary studies and teaching literature as a whole. In his books, he makes elegiac conclusions about the Departments of English Language and Literature, which are likely to be renamed into the departments of Cultural Studies. His another concern is the literary “isms” and “ologies” which he considers to be destroying literature. The paper also focuses on the nature of reading and its various impacts on the reader, and its significance for literature students. The aim of the paper is to show that despite some grain of truth in Bloom’s writings as regards lack of aesthetic value of literary works in the postmodernist period when popular culture has taken over the canon works, there is no reason to worry about the present state of literary studies and literary criticism.
