Opis:
European yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare species, but is the focus of great interest because of the species recovery attempts and its use in medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions for the development of the young generation of this species. Four-year old yew seedlings were grown under artificial light reduction: 2, 8, and 30%, as well as in full light. The seedlings were then planted in natural conditions in fenced and unfenced areas. The results of six years field studies indicated that the greatest impact on survival was shown by the light conditions from the period before planting under the canopy of trees. Seedlings from the 2 and 8% of light showed the greatest mortality. The reason was the sudden change in light conditions, because at the time of planting (early spring), there was no reduction of light under deciduous trees. Almost all of the unfenced yew seedlings were grazed by deer, but yew survival in the unfenced group was surprisingly high despite the permanent grazing. This was explained by the high resistance of yew to cutting and the protection of seedlings by a dense layer of Rubus. The results indicated that yew trees require protection against animals for normal development, even if animals have not previously had contact with Taxus and that yew seedlings are very sensitive to sudden changes in light. Both conclusions can be applied in the development of natural and artificial regeneration of European yew and other endangered plants.

The lack of knowledge about seasonal dynamics and impact of deer browsing on deciduous saplings in plantations in managed forests in Poland raises difficulties in assessing the impact of cervids on forests and in selecting effective methods for protecting plantations against damage caused by deer. The studies covered 1129 saplings of sycamore, oak, beech, linden and birch species that were planted on the unfenced sites accessible for animals and fenced sites left for comparison.

Maleje czytelnictwo książek, prasy, rola doświadczenia. Współczesną zbiorową tożsamość odzwierciedlają teksty elektroniczne. Przejawiają się w nich różne tożsamości: cywilizacyjna, kulturowa, religijna, narodowa, rodzinna, płciowa, zawodowa, artysty i sztuki. Teksty kultury są jednak wyrwane z macierzystych kontekstów. Ulegają recyklingowi. Pośpieszne przeglądanie cyfrowych zasobów ogranicza ich przeżywanie, a media sprowadzają interakcje użytkowników do konwersacyjnych archetypów. Ludzie nie potrafią twórczo uczestniczyć w słabo rozumianych interakcjach. Zbiorowe tożsamości w Sieci strukturalizuje technologia.
The role of readership and experience is declining. Collective identity is reflected by electronic texts. They show different identities: civilizational, cultural, religious, national, family, gender, professional, artistic. Cultural texts, however, are removed from their native contexts and recycled. Fast browsing of digital resources limits emotional experience. Social media limit the interactions of users to only six conversational archetypes. People are unable to function creatively in the poorly understood interactions. The collective identity on the Internet is molded by digital texts.

The paper provides study results on the efficacy of Emol Plus BTX LA repellent used for the protection of Scots pine saplings against browsing by deer. Emol Plus BTX LA contains coarse−grained filler – calcium carbonate and denatonium benzoate (BTX) as active substance. The efficacy of both Emol Plus BTX LA and standard repellents were found to be high.

Opis:
Progeny of four adult silver firs, which were an admixture in Norway spruce (Picea abies) stand was, analyzed. The study was done in lower mountain zone of the Karkonosze (Giant Mts.) National Park (SW Poland). The seedlings occurred in two clumps related to the position of adult trees, whereas spatial pattern of the seedlings inside each clump was random. The seedlings were spaced mainly in distances 5–25 from the nearest adult tree. The maximal distance was up to 50 m. Most seedlings were established in accordance with main wind directions. Also, in these directions seedlings were more distant from adult trees than in other directions. The seedlings grew in better light environment (12% of PPFD) than average (9,6% PPFD). This effect was statistically significant. The height increment of the seedlings was low and was not correlated with light conditions. Similarly, there was not any correlation between the apical dominance ratio and light. The lack of this correspondence we attributed to browsing. The silver fir seedlings were significantly underrepresented in patches of Vaccinium myrtillus, on raw needles, under crown of adult trees and in concave micro-relief form. The underrepresentation in the places covered by canopy and in patches of bilberry we related to the indirect effect of continuous browsing, which leads to higher seedlings mortality in more shaded places and sites of stronger competition between forest floor vegetation and silver fir seedlings.

Opis:
Assessment of the impact of large herbivores on young generation of trees in the protected forests can support decisions about whether to intervene in natural ecosystems (e.g. individual tree protection, animal culling) or not. A study on the condition of forest regeneration, including the assessment of the damage caused by deer, was performed in the Gorczański National Park (GNP; southern Poland) in 1993 for the first time. The inventory was repeated in 1996 and 2011 on the same 415 concentric permanent sample plots located in the centers of 400×400 m grid. Trees with diameter <16 cm or height 1.3 m were counted. The impact of deer was assessed using: (i) the share of browsed terminal shoots in h=0.3−1.3 m class trees and the tolerable (based on a reference) share of browsed trees of such height with the most damaged tree species taken into account and (ii) the proportion between the density of recently (the previous year) debarked, frayed or broken trees and the tolerable (based on a reference) density of such trees. The main interpretation unit was composed of all stands in the GNP, while stands in particular protection districts formed lower level. Over the time, the density of trees in the regeneration layer increased (fig. 1). The density of recently debarked (frayed or broken) trees decreased considerably (fig. 2), even if a large number of trees (especially silver fir) with old wounds existed (fig. 4). The density of the browsed trees remained more or less unchanged. This type of damage most frequently affected silver fir, sycamore maple and rowan (fig. 3). Differences between the level of forest regeneration damage in different protection districts of the GNP remained similar (fig. 5). The deer impact assessed on the basis of the density of debarked trees significantly decreased to be classified as tolerable in 2011. However, the impact assessed with the share of trees with the browsed terminal shoot did not reach the tolerable level in one protection district. Results show that measures undertaken to protect forest regeneration produce a partially positive effect. The browsing level was still too high. Differences in the deer impact on the forest regeneration between protection districts can be considered as permanent ones.

Opis:
The results of the inventory of damage caused by roe deer in a 2−year−old apple orchard in central Poland permitted to evaluate the browsing intensity as well as the relationship between biometric characteristics of trees and browsing intensity. The research showed that damage caused by the roe deer was mainly caused by shoot browsing, then rubbing the velvet antlers against trees and bark stripping. In one winter, roe deer damaged 35% of the orchard by browsing even up to 100% shoots on an individual tree. Significant differences were found between the intensity of browsing the different varieties of apple trees. The largest damage was noted in the case of the Ligol variety (35% of shoots on average), while the smallest – for the Idared and Golden Delicious varieties (approximately 5% of shoots on average). Branching and tree height were not found to affect the level of damage. When establishing forest hunting grounds, the Ligol variety, eagerly browsed by roe deer, should be planted on browsing plots, while Idared and Golden Delicious varieties – in orchards designed for fruiting.
