Opis:
A common conviction that the design language is a source of unlimited abilities, must be re-verified in the case of such a specific object like a printed book. Book design is bound by numerous limitations both internally and externally. Internal limitations are created by the multi-layer design process itself, but also by the communication function of the book and its complex structure, evaluated for hundreds of years to rears to the current form. These limitations touch mostly the four rigid aspects of the book: the scripture, the typographic layout, illustrations and cover. The other kind of limitations which influence the graphic design of the edition, comes from external sources.

Opis:
Rynek książki w większości państw na świecie boryka się z problemami. Trwające od kilku lat niekorzystne zmiany to efekt szybkich przemian technologicznych i cywilizacyjnych, rezultat brutalnych praktyk konkurencyjnych, a także spadku poziomu czytelnictwa. Niezbędne wydaje się podjęcie działań mających na celu poprawę sytuacji w obszarze tak ważnym pod względem rozwoju społeczno-kulturowego, ale i gospodarczego. Pierwszym krokiem w tym procesie jest postawienie odpowiedniej diagnozy sytuacji w tym zakresie. Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka i próba oceny zmian zachodzących na rynku książki w Polsce. Przedstawiono najważniejsze dane statystyczne dotyczące rynku książki, a także podjęto próbę identyfikacji przyczyn niekorzystnej sytuacji i działań prewencyjnych. Ze względu na ograniczoną dostępność, przytaczane i analizowane dane statystyczne dotyczące rynku książki pochodzą z różnych okresów badawczych.
The book market in most countries in the world is struggling with problems. The unfavourable changes that have been taking place for several years are the result of rapid technological and civilisation transformations, the result of violent competitive practices, and the decline in readership. It seems to be necessary to take measures to improve the situation in the area that is so important in terms of socio-cultural and economic development. The first step in this process is to make a proper diagnosis of this situation. The aim of this article is to characterise and to estimate the changes in the book market in Poland. The most important statistical data concerning the book market were presented and an attempt was made to identify the causes of the unfavourable situation and preventive measures. Due to the limited availability, the analysed statistics on the book market come from different research periods.
Рынок книги в большинстве стран мира сталкивается с проблемами. Продолжающиеся в течение ряда лет неблагоприятные изменения – эффект быстрых технологических и цивилизационных преобразований, беспощадных конкурентных практик, а также снижение уровня читательства. Представляется необходимым принятие мер по улучшению ситуации в столь важной с точки зрения социально-культурного, но и экономического развития области. Первый шаг в этом процессе – поставить правильный диагноз ситуации в этом отношении. Цель статьи – дать характеристику и попытаться оценить изменения, происходящие на рынке книги в Польше. Представили самые важные статистические данные о рынке книги, а также предприняли попытку выявить причины неблагоприятной ситуации и предупредительные меры. Из-за ограниченной доступности приводимые и анализируемые статистические данные, касающиеся рынка книги, происходят из разных исследовательских периодов.

Książka Piotra Mareckiego Między kartką a ekranem. Cyfrowe eksperymenty z medium książki w Polsce (2018) ma charakter przeglądowy, typologizujący i systematyzujący. Jej autor wskazuje różnorodność uwikłań medialno-kulturowych, jakie towarzyszyły ewolucji interfejsów piśmienności, poczynając od lat 70. ubiegłego stulecia, a na aktualnych wydarzeniach kończąc. Skupia się na polskiej drodze przygód z cyfrowością książki, która w niczym nie ustępuje jej zagranicznym wariantom, stając się elementem światowego dziedzictwa klasyki literatury elektronicznej. Autor śledzi ewolucję form medialnych poszczególnych manifestacji autorskich na styku kultury „kartki” i kultury „ekranu” (m.in. Józef Żuk Piwkowski, Robert Szczerbowski, Małgorzata Dawidek czy Wojciech Bruszewski), a książka jako taka urasta w jego wywodzie do rangi reprezentantki całego procesu cywilizacyjnego, który odmienił współczesne kultury mediów. Marecki jawi się jako mądry i twórczy spadkobierca oraz kontynuator myśli klasyków zagadnienia: Jaya Davida Boltera, N. Katherine Hayles. Jego książka jest inteligentna, potrzebna i niedługa, a przy tym może zarówno usatysfakcjonować specjalistów, jak i pełnić funkcję lektury inicjalnej w omawianym zakresie.
The book Między kartką a ekranem. Cyfrowe eksperymenty z medium książki w Polsce [Between Page and Screen: Digital Experiments with the Medium of the Book in Poland] (2018) by Piotr Marecki is of an overviewing, typologizing and systemizing nature. Its author points to the diversity of media and cultural entanglements which have accompanied the evolution of literacy interfaces since the 1970s. Marecki focuses on the Polish adventures with book digitality, which is certainly not inferior to its foreign variants, becoming part of the world heritage of electronic literature classics. The author follows the evolution of media forms in particular authors’ manifestations at the junction of the culture of “page” and the culture of “screen” (i.a. Józef Żuk Piwkowski, Robert Szczerbowski, Małgorzata Dawidek or Wojciech Bruszewski). In his argument, the book as such becomes a representative of the whole civilization process which has changed modern media cultures so profoundly. Marecki emerges as a wise and creative successor and continuator of the reflection by the classics of the subject, such as Jay David Bolter and N. Katherine Hayles. His book is intelligent, much-needed and short, and it is also able to both satisfy experts and serve as introductory reading for laymen in the field.

Opis:
Reading, which is the practice of transferring knowledge through printed word, has never been very popular in Poland. At the root of this situation there laid state as well as peasant and proletarian character of the basic social classes in the past. Further retreat from the books was caused by the development of new media an consumption. Regardless of this, literature had developed the basic canons of values that for centuries have been and still are the basic of general education and culture. The book remains the primary medium of dealing with the past in historical education. The main motives for reading are: scientific (cognitive) and utilitarian (practical) reasons. The first of these relate to the world of scholars, the second shall be extended to all social circles. These include educational, technological, political, cultural, compensational, personal, artistic, ludic and many other motives. A large part of the modern readers use new carriers of the culture of language. They use the digital record. This helps to extend the reach of content and ideas created on the basis of literature. This causes that the alarming diagnosis and visions of readership should be judged with greater serenity and distance.

The article presents the activities of the book publishers in Łódź in the years 1945–1956. After the liberation from the German occupation, the city became the seat of nationwide publishers: Czytelnik, Książka, Wiedza. Private publishing houses were established by the pre-war publishers, booksellers and printers, e.g. Kazimierz Pawlak, Stanisław Jamiołkowski, Zbigniew Kozierkiewicz, Władysław Krauze. They published classics of the Polish and world literature, scientific and popular science publications and handbooks. There were also publishing cooperatives among which the SW „Polonista” – the publisher of literary studies dissertations – and Łódzki Instytut Wydawniczy that specialized in children and young adult literature, played the leading role. The publications were prepared by the numerous city institutions, e.g.: Łódź Scientific Association, the State Book Institute, the Library of the University of Łódź, the City Art Gallery in Łódź, Textile Research Institute, Military Research- Publishing Institute. Jewish publishers issued works recording Jewish martyrology, bellelettres and writings devoted to Palestine. From 1949 to 1950 publishers who were not socialized were eliminated from the market. Private publishers from Łódź also liquidated their companies, cooperatives were closed down or connected with the central superior structures. From 1950 to 1956 there were two professional scientific presses: Łódź Scientific Association and the Łódź Branch of the Polish Scientific Publishers. For numerous institutions book publishing was an addition to their basic activities. They published specialist literature, needed by experts working in different industry branches (cotton, rubber, leather, etc.) as well as prints for social workers. Łódź repertoire was completed by books prepared by cultural institutions, National Front propaganda publishers and Diocesan Curia’s presses

There are nineteen clerics on the pages of the Plock’s book of assessors in the years 1489-1517. There were primarily associated with the local church environment. Their involvement as arbiters in conflicts is evident; they are also present as the executors of the testaments or the addressee of testament legate, the contractors of acts of buy-sell, the holders of deposits or prudent guardians looking after goods of the Church. The inscription in the Plock’s book of assessors in which we see the clergy, lead to the conclusion that the local representatives of the Church enjoyed trust and authority among the local people.

Liber actorum civilium of the city of Płock covering the years 1489-1517 is a valuable source of information about the social and professional structure of Płock, as well as its customs and culture at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Fortunately it survived the destruction of archival and library collections in Warsaw during World War II, and was published in 1995 by Danuta Poppe. On the pages of this liber of the city of Płock for the years 489-1517 we find representatives of 20 professions who lived and worked in Płock. As was already mentioned it is not the complete list, although it still shows the areas of the activity of the townspeople from Płock. The testaments say a lot about their financial status where sacrum, charity, care and family protection completed each other. The records in which the Płock craftsman appear on the pages of the liber actorum civilum concerned every day matters as purchase, sale, exchange, lease or donations. The fact that they enjoyed the popularity of the residents of the city shows that they were asked for arbitration of arguable matters. At the turn of 15th and 16th century the craftsmen were involved in the guilds, of which the liber mentions four: butchers, weavers, shoemakers, saddlers. The traits were concerned with the development of the craft among other trade contracts. Moreover they defended the interests of their community, they provided aid to the needy, gave opportunities for social contacts and also cared for the morality of the guild members.

The article concerns the relations between the main character of the film Sara (directed by M. Ślesicki in 1997) and books (especially Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment) in the context of social and political changes in Poland in the 1990s. The presence of books in popular Polish films from that period is not described in research, hence this article provides a short introduction to this subject. The main hypothesis of the paper is that the presence of books on the margins of narration in popular films reflects social changes in thinking about literature.
