Opis:
The purpose of this study has been to determine the effect of soil contamination with fluorine on the content of phosphorus in crops. Alongside the simulated fluorine soil pollution, substances neutralizing this xenobiotic, such as lime, charcoal and loam, were applied to soil. Depending on the sensitivity of the plants, the degree of soil pollution with fluorine was: 1) 0, 20, 40 and 60 mg F kg-1 of soil under sensitive crops, i.e. narrow-leaf lupine; 2) 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg F kg-1 of soil under moderately sensitive crops, i.e. seed lucerne; 3) 0, 100, 200 and 300 mg F kg-1 of soil under more tolerant crops, i.e. maize, winter oilseed rape, spring triticale, black radish and phacelia. The content of phosphorus varied, depending on the level of soil contamination with fluorine and substances applied to inactivate this element, as well as on the species and organ of the examined plants. An increasing degree of soil pollution with fluorine contributed to raising the phosphorus content in black radish, in aerial biomass of yellow lupine and in roots of spring triticale. Regarding the maize roots, a reverse dependence was recorded. The highest phosphorus content appeared in roots of winter oilseed rape (8.16 g P kg-1 d.m.) and black radish (7.33 g P kg-1 d.m.), while the lowest one was in roots of spring triticale (0.86 g P kg-1 d.m.). Overall, the applied neutralizing substances resulted in lower concentrations of phosphorus in the analyzed plant organs, with the most univocal influence achieved in aerial biomass of yellow lupine, in roots of narrow-leaf lupine, in aerial mass and roots of black radish and in aerial biomass from the first cut of seed lucerne. In respect of the other plants, the impact of the neutralizing substances on the content of phosphorus was also significant albeit dependent on their species.

Opis:
Reduction of CO2 emissions in Poland (excluding transport) should be related to a change in the structure of electricity production sources. Similar actions have been taken by many European countries. In 2017, in the European Union’s power industry, the largest emitters were dominated by coal-fired power plants in Germany (seven power plants). However, the leader of this ranking turned out to be the Belchatów power plant owned by the Polish Energy Group (PGE). Renewable energy is energy obtained from natural processes. It should be obtained in a way that would not cause a deficit of natural resources (renewed in a short time) to have a limited impact on the environment. The purpose of promoting and using renewable energy sources (RES) is to reduce the harmful effects of energy on the natural environment, primarily by limiting greenhouse gas emissions (water vapour, CO2, CH4, CFC, N2O, halon, ozone and industrial gases HFC, PFC, SF6). Biomass is the most widely used renewable energy source currently used. The study of the literature and comparison of the set parameters for different types of biomass in the given order shows that Virginia mallow has the highest usefulness for energy purposes. Considering the fact that both cashew and coconut (shells) cannot be grown due to the climate prevailing in Poland, Virginia mallow seems to be the best alternative for traditional fuels used in the energy sector in the analysed group. Virginia mallow has competitive properties to wood biomass and hard coal only significantly supercedes in terms of calorific value. The energy properties of Virginia mallow can additionally be improved as a result of the torrefaction process. In addition, in the literature on the subject, attention is paid to the fact that mallow may be grown on less-favoured soils and the process of its collection – in contrast to other such plants – does not require the use of specialized agricultural machinery.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań toryfikacji wybranych próbek biomasy, istotnych z punktu widzenia potencjalnego wykorzystania w warunkach polskich.
This paper presents the results of torrefaction of selected biomass samples which are important from the point of view of their potential use in Poland. The sample thermal treatments were carried out at various temperatures, analyzing the process parameters’ effects on biomass drying and torrefaction. Furthermore, the effect of the process parameters on biomass composition, including the content of volatile matter, fixed carbon, the elements C and H, and high heating value, was also investigated. The study results demonstrated that under specified temperature conditions, a temperature rise is observed, thus confirming the occurrence of exothermic reactions. It was also determined that the most significant variations in sample weight, changes in the volatile content and the contents of the elements C and H, as well as changes in the calorific value of solid residues, occurred for cases when the process temperature was increased from 250°C to 300°C. The test results also indicated that proper selection of the temperature of sample thermal treatment makes it possible to produce solid carbonatious char containing as much as 80% C, and characterized by a high heating value of up to 30 MJ/kg. The results presented in this paper confirm that the parameters of thermally-treated biomass may be controlled by the temperature of the process of its thermal treatment.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of research focused on the investigations of the possibilities to use biochar to improve the quality and productivity of soils. Biochar is a material similar to the commonly known charcoal obtained from the thermolysis process (a process similar to dry distillation of wood). The structure and technical properties of biochar depend on the type of biomass which is produced and the thermal decomposition process conditions: process time, temperature and atmosphere. It was found that a positive effect of biochar on the soil properties is manifested through the improvement of soil fertility, better water retention, improvement of the cation exchange, and the regulation of the pH. The biochar used in the present study was obtained by autothermal thermolysis of biomass at 300 °C. Three types of biochars of different origin were used. The biochar samples were subjected to ultimate and proximate analysis, as well as structural and porosimetric investigations. The experimental research were also conducted on the experimental test field and gave a positive effect of the presence of biochar on soil quality and plant yield. Biochar introduced into soil allows for long-term storage of carbon. The introduction of biochar to soil has a positive effect on plant growth, higher dose resulted in an increase in biochar and plant mass.

Opis:
The direct carbon fuel cell technology provides excellent conditions for conversion of chemical energy of carbon-containing solid fuels directly into electricity. The technology is very promising since it is relatively simple compared to other fuel cell technologies and accepts all carbon-reach substances as possible fuels. Furthermore, it makes possible to use atmospheric oxygen as the oxidizer. In this paper the results of authors. recent investigations focused on analysis of the performance of a direct carbon fuel cell supplied with graphite, granulated carbonized biomass (biocarbon), and granulated hard coal are presented. The comparison of the voltage-current characteristics indicated that the results obtained for the case when the cell was operated with carbonized biomass and hard coal were much more promising than those obtained for graphite. The effects of fuel type and the surface area of the cathode on operation performance of the fuel cell were also discussed.

Opis:
The paper presents the results and analysis of biomass processing in order to provide the conditions for the most profitable use of the biomass in modern and efficient power generation systems with particular attention put on the decrease of the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and no need to develop carbon capture and storage plants. The promising concept of CO2 storage via the production of biochar and the advantages of its application as a promising carbon sink is also presented and the results are supported by authors’ own experimental data. The idea enables the production of electricity, as well as (optionally) heat and cold from the thermal treatment of biomass with simultaneous storage of the CO2 in a stable and environmentally-friendly way. The key part of the process is run in a specially-designed reactor where the biomass is heated up in the absence of oxygen. The evolved volatile matter is used to produce heat/cold and electricity while the remaining solid product (almost completely dry residue) is sequestrated in soil. The results indicate that in order to reduce the emission of CO2 the biomass should rather be 'cut and char' than just 'cut and burn', particularly that the charred biomass may also become a significant source of nutrients for the plants after sequestration in soil.

W pracy zostały przedstawione równowagi sorpcyjne wybranych gatunków drewna, które są przydatne do projektowania procesu suszenia a także schematy aparatur do badania izobar i izoterm sorpcji. Zbadano próbki wierzby z gatunku Salix viminalis (2 i 3 letnie pędy), brzozy, sosny i dębu w temperaturach do 125°C i wyniki porównano z danymi literaturowymi dla różnych gatunków drewna. Głównym celem pracy była próba opisu własnych danych eksperymentalnych i danych literaturowych w szerokim zakresie temperatur i wilgotności za pomocą jednego uogólnionego równania. Dopasowano równanie pozwalające przewidywać równowagę sorpcyjną drewna w szerokim zakresie temperatur i wilgotności. Dopasowane równanie jest uniwersalne zarówno dla procesu suszenia parą przegrzaną jak i gorącym powietrzem. Znajomość tych równowag umożliwia wyznaczenie wilgotności krytycznej, charakteryzującej przejście z I do II okresu suszenia, i równowagowej wilgotnego materiału stwarzając jednocześnie możliwość prawidłowego zamodelowania procesu suszenia.
This paper presents sorption equilibrium for some wood varieties that is necessary for designing drying processes. In that article set-up for isotherm and isobar sorption determination are shown. Samples of willow Salix viminalis (2 and 3-year stems), birch, pine and oak were examined in temperature range up to 125°C. The results were compared with data available in literature for different wood species. The main aim of that paper was an attempt to describe our own experimental data and literature data in a wide range of temperatures and moisture contents by one, generalized equation. The generalized equation describing sorption equilibrium in a wide range of temperatures and moisture content was fitted. The fitted equation is universal and can be used for both air drying and superheated steam drying. The knowledge about sorption equilibrium enables to determine critical (characterizes the transition between I and II drying period) and equilibrium moisture content of wet material. It gives the possibility for proper designing of drying processes.

Opis:
Dreissena polymorpha inhabits about 46.5% of the bottom area in Lake Dabie. It is most abundant in the northern part of the lake and sporadically occurs in its southern part. The average density of the zebra mussel is 891 individuals/m², while its wet weight is 1374 g/ m². In the settled areas the density of the zebra mussel reaches 1734 individuals/ m². There were presently established 7 age-groups from 0 to 6+. The highest number of specimens occurred in the age-groups between 1+ and 3+, while the lowest number - in the groups 0, 5 and 6+. Strong eutrophication and pollution of Lake Dabie on its southern side, combined with sedimentation of the extensive amounts of seston carried in by the Płonia and Regalica rivers, do not create favourable conditions for development of Dreissena. D. polymorpha plays a very positive role in the lake ecosystem through its biofiltrating action, contributing thus to an increase of water clarity and to limitation of phytoplankton development through cumulating nutrients in its biomass. Electrophoretic analysis of 9 enzymatic loci revealed strong polymorphism of the studied population of the zebra mussel: percent of polymorphic loci - 100, mean number of alleles in locus – 3.4, coefficient of expected heterozygosity per locus in the population, HS - 0.335, percentage of separate genotypes - 69%, in this number unique genotypes - 58%. A very strong scattering of the alleles was stated within the entire population. In each aggregation, on average, 90% of the specimens have a separate genotype. Each of the five defined groups of D. polymorpha, representing profiles I-V, respectively, had similar genetic composition. The values of the genetic similarity among the studied groups of the zebra mussel ranged from 0.96 to 0.99.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper focuses on the synthesis and comparison of hydrogel- and xerogel-based sorbents from EFB. Design/methodology/approach: Hydrogels were synthesised by polymerisation of EFB biochar with acrylamide (AAm) as a monomer, N, N'-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as cross-linker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator, as well as by internal gelation method of sodium alginate, empty fruit bunch (EFB), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and glucono delta-lactone (GDL). From the alginate hydrogels obtained, xerogels were synthesised via the oven-drying method. Then, EFB-based hydrogel and xerogel sorbents were analysed and compared based on characterisation analysis by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer− Emmett−Teller (BET), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Findings: The xerogel-based EFB is a better adsorbent than the hydrogel-based EFB because it has a larger pore volume (0.001449 cm3/g), larger pore size (63.7987 nm), higher moisture content (7.97%), lower ash content (12.55%), and is more thermally stable. Research limitations/implications: The research is to compare two new adsorbents, namely Hydrogel and Xerogel, from EFB in terms of their characteristics. Practical implications: Both adsorbents show a highly toxic material uptake, especially EFB xerogel. This adsorbent is comparable with the other commercialised adsorbent. Thus, this product can be a highly potential adsorbent for gas and wastewater adsorption. Originality/value: The authenticity results of this article were found to be 15% similar. The novelty of this paper is to compare the two adsorbents, namely hydrogel and xerogel, that originated from EFB.
