bridging contexts - Opis:
- The paper traces the evolution of textual properties of the Old French bipartite reciprocal marker li uns l’autre originating from Latin unus alterum. The data for carrying out the analysis were retrieved mainly from two corpora: the ARTFL Textes de Français Ancien and the Perseus Digital Library (perseus.tufts.edu). The markers documented at various stages of the history are demonstrated to have been different from each other mainly as far as two criteria are concerned: the type and the selection of antecedents. Unlike in classical and late Latin, where unus alterum used to be obligatorily co-indexed, Old French li uns l’autre was occasionally able to do away with antecedents (the li uns Nsing l’autre construction). The conclusions revolve around the adequacy of the Government and Binding theory: reciprocal markers in non-configurational languages are not always amenable to the analysis conducted in terms of this theoretical framework. Instead, it is claimed that the problem is more adequately grasped if the concept of construction, i.e. form-meaning pair, is applied.
