Opis:
BACKGROUND During half time or breaks in play cryotherapy is often applied for analgesia for minor musculoskeletal sport injury, however the effect of cryotherapy on dynamic stability is debated. A risk factor for further lower limb injury may be heightened due to a reduction in dynamic postural stability. OBJECTIVES The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of wetted-ice applied for 20-minutes at the ankle on dynamic stability using the star excursion balance test, immediately-post exposure and over a rewarming period of 30-minutes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-two healthy male athletes that regular took part in land-based sport were assessed on reach directions of Anterior (Ant), Posteromedial (PM), and Posterolateral (PL) using the modified star excursion balance test (mSEBT) on the non-dominant limb. Thermal imaging quantified skin surface temperature (Tsk) over lateral and medial regions. Participants were tested pre-intervention, exposed to 15-minutes wetted-ice cryotherapy application, immediately-post and up to 30-minutes post intervention at 10-minute intervals. RESULTS Significant decreases in Tsk over the medial and lateral regions of the ankle (p < 0.05) not returning to pre-cooling temperatures at 30-minutes post. Significant decrease in reach -distance scores (ANT, PL and PM) pre-immediately post and at 10, 20 and 30-minutes post cryotherapy exposure. CONCLUSION Following wetted ice application to the non-dominant ankle, dynamic postural stability was adversely affected for up to 30-minutes post exposure demonstrated through a decrease in reach scores for ANT, PL and PM directions. Functional performance which requires stabilising mechanisms may be negatively affected and contribute to a heightened risk of injury or further injury in consideration of the findings.

Assessment of the sustainability of nutrient balances in selected group of 20 organic farms located in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie was aim of the research. Balance of NPK, the share of green fields and the balance of soil organic matter were taken into account in the assessment. MACROBIL program was used to calculate the field balance. Organic farms were characterized by a positive, safe balance of nitrogen of 2.8 N ha-1 year-1. While the balance of phosphorus and potassium was negative and amounted, respectively, -2 and -21.6 N ha-1 year-1. Sustainable balance of potassium was noted in the animal farms, while strongly negative in farms specialized in plant production. Balance of soil organic matter in the organic farms was positive and amounted on an average of 0.53 t DM/ha. The highest values of this index were recorded in farms specialized in animal production. The share of green fields in the studied group of organic farms amounted slightly more than 50%, which indicates their great potential in reducing the negative effects associated with agricultural production.

Opis:
Aim: The purpose of this study was to show the characteristics of postural stability in the aging process of elderly people, using the stabilography method and risk assessment of falling occurring in this age group. Materials and methods: The overall study included 36 people engaged in the therapeutic process in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Centre in Krzeszowice ORNR. Their average age was 69,42 (± 7,12) years. The test consisted of unconstrained standing on the stabilograph platform for 30 seconds in different experimental conditions: (1) Unconstrained standing with open eyes, (2) Unconstrained standing with closed eyes, (3) Unconstrained standing with open eyes after 6 revolutions on the Barany’s chair. Results: This research showed that the posture of elderly people is characterized by higher values of displacement/COP lean in the sagittal plane rather than frontal plane. Furthermore, it demonstrated that limitations in impulses from sensory inputs (vestibular and visual system) result in an increase of oscillations of the stabilogram graphic curve. However, no strong link between the values of individual measurements (stabilogram) and the occurrence of fall was established. Conclusions: This study showed the usefulness of the stabilography method in describing the stability of the human body. Yet, in order to determine the objectivity of this method, further tests need to be done on larger sample groups and norms regarding people of different ages have to be elaborated. The results obtained in this research might however contribute towards the development of modern accident prevention programs.

Opis:
The study objective was to evaluate the impact of a ten-day rehabilitation process on the change of the distribution of body mass and the load on the lower limbs, using the tandem balance test and the modified tandem balance test in a sitting position in stroke patients. The distribution of load on the lower limbs found its expression in the index, referred to as the Kwolek index, which was developed. It was calculated as the quotient of the greater value to the lesser one, both obtained in the tandem balance test; the normal limits ranged from 1.00 to 1.15. Material and methods. The test group comprised of 60 stroke patients. 30 people were qualified to the control group. The basis for the analysis was the measurements of the distribution of body mass and load on the lower limbs in the tandem balance test and in the modified tandem balance test. The distribution of body mass test was carried out on the first and last day of rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of ischaemic stroke patients involved comprehensive physiotherapy. Results. When analyzing the distribution of body mass symmetry before and after the therapy in both the control group and the test group, an increase in the number of people was observed in the groups with a lower Kwolek index, whereas a decrease was present in the number of people in groups with a higher Kwolek index. Conclusions. Comprehensive rehabilitation affects the improvement of the distribution of body mass.
Materiał i metoda. Badaniom zostało poddane 96 osób. Grupę badaną stanowiło 60 pacjentów po udarze mózgu. Do grupy kontrolnej zakwalifikowano 30 osób. Podstawą analizy były pomiary rozkładu masy ciała i obciążenia kończyn dolnych w teście dwóch wag oraz zmodyfikowanym teście dwóch wag (w pozycji siedzącej).

Self-management is a relatively new concept. Only a human with the sustainable personality, a relatively broad knowledge of the surrounding reality and the sense of his / her own life is able to wisely pursue his / her far-reaching life goals. The balance between the most crucial aspects of personality, i.e. physicality, mentality, spirituality and emotionality, is the most important condition to make the above possible. If a person treats those characteristics in a balanced manner and none of them gains a significant advantage over others it should be assumed that all decisions concerning the present and future socio-occupational and personal life will be rational, deliberate and planned in such a way that any socio-situational conditions never interfere his / her traced out vision of life.

Balance and gait stability assessment is an important part of the otoneurological examination. We present the review of the clinical bedside tests procedures for diagnosis patients with balance disorders. Instability may occur not only in vestibular system dysfunction but in neurological, musculoskeletal and visual system lesions as well. An accurate clini-cal bedside ocular motor examination like, range of motion, stability of fixation, the presence of nystagmus, saccadic and smooth pursuit tests, give information about dynamic character of ocular motility. Tests of the balance system and cerebellum functioning were elaborated. Interpretations criteria for clinical bedside tests in different disease were pre-sented. Head shaking and head trust tests for vestibular system imbalance were described. Authors paid attention to the connection between examinations results and labyrinth or central nervous system disorders. Other tests are suggested to be used in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo diagnosis and ability to self-contained patients gait evaluation. There are some more complex and time-consuming tests like Dynamic Gait Index and Berg Balance Scale, measuring quanti-tative aspects of gait efficiency. The results are obtained based on points which are obtained in various tasks e.g. walking with pivot turn, stepping over and around obstacles. All of these tests are essential part of clinical examination and give preliminary information about patients functioning status and allow to focus on further diagnosis. The final results based on points which are obtained in various tasks e.g. walking with pivot turn, stepping over and around obstacles. Objectives The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of bedside examination for screening of vestibular and balance system for occupational medicine purposes. Study group comprised 165 patients referred to Audiology and Phoniatric Clinic due to vestibular and/or balance problems. Caloric canal paresis of 19% was the cut off value to divide patients into 43 caloric-positive vestibular subjects and 122 caloric-negative patients. The latter group comprised 79 subjects revealing abnormalities of videonystagmographic (VNG) oculomotor tests (central group) and 43 subjects with normal VNG. Material and Methods Vestibular and balance symptoms were collected. Five tests were included to bedside examination: Romberg and Unterberger tests, Head Impulse Test (HIT), Dynamic Visual Acuity (DVA) and gaze nystagmus assessment. Results Vestibular and balance symptoms were reported by 82% of vestibular, 73% of central and 40% of VNG-normal patients. Thirteen out of 18 VNG-normal but symptomatic subjects (73%) had abnormal tests in clinical assessment. The sensitivity of bedside test set for vestibular pathology was 88% as compared to caloric test and 68% for central pathology as compared to VNG oculomotor tests. Conclusions The combination of 5 bedside tests reveal satisfactory sensitivity to detect vestibular abnormalities. Bedside examination abnormalities are highly correlated with vestibular/balance symptoms, regardless the normal results of VNG. Thus, this method should be recommended for occupational medicine purposes.

Centre of gravity represents the point where the net force of gravity of all the body parts is applied. Balance is a specific state of the postural control system, being a vertical orientation of human body maintained through balancing the forces and moments of forces that act on the body. Stability is understood to mean the ability to recover the state of balance and typical body position in the space. The concept of division of the rider's posture into 5 blocks that has been used in the literature seems to be legitimate. However, due to the natural shape of spinal curvature, the division of body into opposing truncated pyramids (a trapezoid in the sagittal plane and a rectangle with longer horizontal sides in the frontal plane) appears to be more accurate. The eight-segment model is dynamic and illustrates all the shallowed or deepened spinal curvatures very well while maintaining alternate sagittal curvatures with regard to the deficits of motion in the joints. It is also correct in anatomical terms since it contains all the sections and joints in the kinematic chain. Body posture, considered under conditions of the equestrian pair (a rider and a horse) as a motor task, will be adjusted using the continuous control. This control works within the tracking system and consistently adjusts the activity of different muscles to current needs. These needs result from a specific program encoded in the central nervous system and, more specifically, from the difference between the program and current state of the equestrian pair. This program is developed during equestrian training and it represents a demanded situation.

Opis:
Introduction: A vertical posture distinguishes humans from other living beings. It also determines the specific conditions for movement. The element which connects body posture and movement is stability. It is based on the static and dynamic balancing of the destabilising forces of gravity and inertia through stimulating the appropriate muscle groups. A disruption of postural control may be conditioned by various factors, among which the literature mentions mental health. The purpose of this study was a comparative analysis of selected variables characterising the postural stability of persons with depression.Material and methods: The study involved fifty-four persons who were divided into two groups. The first group comprised 28 patients diagnosed with depression. The mean age of the participants was 37.25 +/ – 3.88. The second group consisted of 26 completely healthy persons who were recruited from the general population, excluding persons with depression or a low mood. The mean age of the participants was 33.31 +/ – 5.19 years. The postural stability was assessed using a PEL 38 posturographic platform and TWIN 99 computer software. Results: The results differed significantly between the two groups with regard to five variables: oscillations of the centre of gravity in the frontal and the sagittal planes, average deviation in the frontal plane, and deviations in the parameters of instability (the surface area and the ratio of length to the surface area). It was observed that the group with a diagnosis of depression displayed higher values in 4 out of 5 the evaluated parameters when compared to the control group. Conclusions: Persons with depression are characterised by a reduced body stability compared to those who do not suffer from depression.
Do drugiej grupy zakwalifikowano 26 osób. Osoby te były w pełni zdrowe, rekrutowane z ogólnej populacji, u których wykluczono depresję i obniżenie nastroju. Średnia wieku badanych wynosiła 33,31 +/- 5,19 lat. Do badań oceniających stabilność wykorzystano platformę PEL 38 i oprogramowanie komputerowe TWIN 99. Wnioski: Osoby z depresją cechuje zmniejszenie stabilności ciała w porównaniu do osób bez depresji.

Cereals are an important component of agriculture and Polish economy since they are grown by 89.5% of farms, occupy almost three quarters of crop area and are an essential component of crop rotation (2013). 19.1% of global agriculture production and 35.5% of plant production and 13.1% of the agricultural commodity production and 29.1% of crop production form an important source of nutrients, the basis of the food pyramid and a basic component of food security, cereals and their derivatives are the subject of foreign trade and a source of increasing surplus in the trade balance (2012/2013 + 1 150 thousand euros). Already in pre- WWII Poland the position of grain was high, and in post-war Poland variable with a tendency to increase their role in plantings and agricultural production. Under the influence of various factors, mainly economic and natural there are changes to the total cereal cultivation area and the individual species. The universality of cereal crops makes difficulties in disseminating biological and technological progress. Although in the post-war period there was a decrease in areas planted with cereals, their collections are on the rise; also changes its structure in favor of more intensive species at a higher value in use (wheat, barley, triticale, corn). The production is realized in order to satisfy human needs, and therefore a good measure of the production of goods per 1 inhabitant, in this case the grain. From the pre-war years to modern years grain production has increased from 404 kg per capita to 739 kg. In the balance sheet of cereals at the beginning of the twenty-first century, we have two different situations; relatively stable internal consumption is accompanied by high volatility on the production side (changes in acreage and yields), which generates the need for imports in the years of crop failure. In Poland, cereals consumed (average of the years 2000 / 01-2012 / 13, for 13 years) are as follows: grazing − 60.5%, consumption − 22.2%, sowing (reproduction) − 7.2%, industrial processing − 4.5%, other (loss defects) − 3.7%. At the same time Poland exported 15,676 thousand tons of grain, and imported 16, 530 thousand tones, i.e. 854 thousand tons more. In subsequent years, however, there were changing trends in the balance of foreign trade in grain. In the period of Polish membership in the European Union we observe the increased foreign sales of grain and milk (both exports and imports). As a result of well-developed grain processing and export of its products Poland has achieved positive balance of trade with increasing surplus with foreign countries in terms of value for several years. The cereals market in Poland − as in other European Union countries − is regulated, and this action is led the Agricultural Market Agency on behalf of the state.
